Well despite my earlier concerns i have bagged a copy of this.

I'm a sucker for limited edition things, one off all in the box games! Yeah that's a weakness.

I also have not purchased anything GW in about 3 months so i have the money to spend on that, rather then other models.

Still amazing nothing really got leaked about this!

And by then it would be too late, sold out because of all the eBay scalpers trying to get it listed as quickly as possible for twice the price.

I'd much rather look at any of their games that don't require GW's almighty 'ok' to produce. Tanhauser, Battlelore, Descent, Talisman, Dust - the list goes on and on.

That being the case then perhaps talisman is a poor example, it being a GW game and all.

Also FFG handled some of the Spulk development, I wonder if they did the same on Dreadfleet as well? Need to see the rulebook for a number of reasons now!

£70... no thanks. I have to choose between Space Marine and Gears of War this month already. (picked Gears)

I fear for the potential price of the next 40k edition if GW are willing to farm this out for £70...

Well, I was hoping for more ships in a ship game. And I don't mean the amount. Pretty much the only good looking actual ship-like ship in the box is the ghost one, the rest are either horribly skewed (like the Empire) or laden with so much extra junk they you can barely see the hull. The elven one has sails attached to goddamn towers. Yeah, nothing says agile and fast like sailing around with actual towers on your deck.

Don't get me wrong, the Chaos Dwarf Octopus and Draven Barge look good. The Empire and Dark Elf ones are salvageable, as is the Araby one.

It's just that I don't think I'm in a market for more "good, but not good enough" miniatures.

Maybe the rules will turn out good.

Edit: Oh yeah, the paintjobs? Atrocious for the scale.

My 4 year old kid asked- Is it pirates and sinked ships?
Well I never looked at it like that, but the concepts do really look like most of those ships are sunk, so many silly things on top... 90 euros? Not even for 45 euros.

Yeah. This is a bust.

£70 - the weekend before Games Day?

Maybe if you'd released it at the beginning of the month or perhaps the beginning of next month for advance order it'd have gone down better.

Or, you know, done Warhammer Quest.

The reasons Space Hulk worked out so well?

- It was an existing game with history. People had fond memories of it and Veterans would happily play with new players and help them get he most of it.

-The minis were able to be used elsewhere - I've seen the Terminators used in no less than five different armies!

With this? Well, you can't really use those ships anywhere else. And to be honest, no one really knows how that game even works. Can't expect me to put out money in advance for a game that I have no idea over.

Now if they'd done Warhammer Quest? It'd be sold out within the hour - simply because the adventurers and monsters would've been able to be used elsewhere, Quest has history and it's also a nice 'Fantasy' equivalent of Space Hulk - so could help bring people into Fantasy that way.

Intrigued.
Absolute love the models, very individual looking with great character to them.
However I wonder would it keep ones inetrest? With only 10 ships, once you learn their tactics and abiliites and throw in some random event cards, how far can you take it?
I'd have fears that its too simplistic to hold any long term interest and with it being a once off release, expansions arent going to keep it alive.
Might go dibs with a mate or two though and get a copy.

That was close to my thinking...basically "no, Ill pass", followed by "you want $115 for that?!?! now Im really not interested".

So yeah, a couple of the ships are cool, most are meh, a couple suck. The terrain looks cool. I might pick up some random pieces when people part them out on ebay, if the prices dont get too high.

You know what is annoying? All those people as late as yesterday saying that Warhammer Quest would need too many cards, counters and plastic miniatures etc to be viable. This shows GW can do all that, but instead of making something people are desperate for, they make this load of ASS instead and expect people to pre-order it on the basis of a few pretty pictures. Who the hell would do that?

I take it back.

It looks like a slightly more adult version of Buccaneer board game from Waddington's. Yeah, that one that was rehashed for the release of the Pirates of the Caribbean film. Talking of which GW you should have brought this out 6 months ago when Pirates of the Caribbean was in the cinemas. Who had the big idea of releasing a pirate game 6 months after the biggest pirate film of the last few years has left the cinemas? Jeeze GW you are slow. It's not like you didn't know it was coming, hell, unlike GW the film studios advertise their stuff far in advance.

10 ships? You'd think they could do more than that. Oh yes, there's a gak load of islands all with skulls. Unlike Space Hulk, you can't even use this stuff with you other games. I smell a flop coming. £70?! If this does flop and they turn around and try to hold it as proof that people don't like 'specialist games' I will be annoyed.

I watched the 10 minute video and it honestly didn't do anything for me. The game looks gorgeous and I love the sea surface piece, which would be very useful in other sea battle games as well... but without knowing anything about how the game actually PLAYS, how can I put down 90 euros for it? I mean, that's not an unheard of price for coffin box sized board games, but every one of those I have thoroughly researched beforehand. And of course by the time we actually hear more about how this thing plays, it'll be too late. It could be a masterpiece, it could be a disaster, it could be anything in between. Want to make a 90 euro bet?

Wargames are neat.

Enough with this already, with the lead times required for plastics, GW probably had their squid designed before Spartan even announced Dystopian Wars, let alone the squid, which is a fairly recent model.

Well, there's actually 17 ships when you count in the cogs, plus some other auxiliares and sea monsters. But I wonder too, is this scenario based like Space Hulk? Did the video mention this? And so little is told about the game play itself.

I don't think the price is such a big deal vs the contents, the miniatures are after all much higher quality than what one usually sees in board games. But for 90 euros, you do expect some sustained playability.

As I said before, this is not my cup of tea (neither was Space Hulk) but nice that they release something different, and not just more Space Marines.

yeah,
what a bunch of cry babies... it's really really sad.
I think GW are always going to be faced with a army of whiners on the intrawebs.
Their main games are massively expandable and eveyday you gits complain about the £1000000s GW makes you spend on armies...
they release a £70 all in game and before anyones played it you start to cry "but but but I want to expand my army... I want to choose my forces!!"

I'm looking forward to playing this and trying a new game.

I think the game is a mess, saving my money.

They sholuld have done a one off Warhammer Quest, the fact they have not leads me to wonder if it is one of the titles sold to FFG.

Which is the dark elf one- the Swordfish? (Basically, the one that looks most like a ship besides the ghost ship)

I didn't realize dark elves were represented. I'm not sure they are, though, since that ship seemed to be one of the "good" ones in the end? Couldn't quite tell from the vid, but from the pic when they're all lined up, it's on the "good guy" side o the line.

The one on the top left is what I'm referring to:

Link the to the page where it's at with the very informative video, which talks a hair about gameplay as well as rotating around most of the ships:

yeah,
lets not dismiss other viewpoints, however valid they may or may not be as 'cry-babies'. It's just as demeaning as someone being called a fan-boy. Neither term is conducive to reasoned debate. As with anything, there will be opposing viewpoints and strong opinions but that doesn't make them any less valid. It may well be a good game but there would appear to be some downsides in some people's eyes.
