Thanks mate , I really couldn't live with it as it was such a badly posed model. I like the zombies but will have to build an entire new set with space hulk themed bases !

I bit the bullet and set to masking the dumb ass hazard lines I thought would look nice on the pods.

Two and a half hours later I've managed one pod and needing a good bottle of red

Totally un-related, has anyone thought about converting an ork dakkajet or similar into an imperial guard jet ?

I feel you with the hazard stripes.

When I got to doing my pod I agonised over the stripes for days trying to come up with a way to get them even. I ended up using a very small metal ruler on the inside and outside area and having the same distance between each stripe. It was a NIGHTMARE.

As I have two more pods to paint I am eagerly awaiting other peoples suggestions.

Something you can do, if you didn't, is to start with the first piece of tape, then position another next to it, aligned edge to edge.
Then add a third piece, aligned to that one.
Then remove the 2nd piece and you have have aligned and spaced masking tape. Much more accurate than doing them by eye.

I usually find myself freehanding hazard stripes though. For small areas, large areas, I would probably do the above.

I have some more to do, and I'm not looking forward to it , they are deceptively complex to paint !
Measuring sounds like a lot of hard work, respect my friend !

Small update on the pods, I masked both up , one thin stripes and as that nearly killed me one with larger stripes!
They need a bit of cleaning up where paint has bled under the masking tape. I not completely happy, I think the angles are wrong but anyhow it's on and should blend in a bit with a bit of chipping and weathering.
Comments welcome !

Glad to hear you like the idea chaps. I should probably add that to the "daily tips" thread...

It's worth the pain, Big'. They look good.

I think I prefer the thicker stripes, they seem more "in scale" to the application.

To avoid bleeding of the paint with masking tape it's best to use a hard (but not sharp) object to push the edges down firmly, and don't paint on too much or too thin a paint (this is expecially important for solvent-based paints, but should also help for water-based)... I should probably add that to the "painters" thread.

Good job.

Thanks Dr ! I origionally thought the thinner stripes would be more "inscale " but as it turns out the thicker , and infinitely easier thicker ones look better

All good solid tips there too matey, and incidentally ones that I knew from a short time when I worked in a spray bay on cars and trucks, but red wine made me ignore it !

Pulled this bad boy out of the attic, and incorporated it into a 40k game as a counts as "dread knight"
It's gotta be the best part of 25 to 30 years since I made and painted this kit.
So ladies and gentlemen, should I leave it in all it 1980's Rogue trader glory, or jazz it up with new bitz and gubbinz and re-spray for the new modern age ?

True enough mate, but I think the last time I tinkered with this model must've been 20 years ago!

nerdfest09 wrote:Forget the giant robot! is that a ruined chapel of sanctity behind him? :-) love that terrain!

It is the Sanctity joby, my attic is full of all kinds of 40k crap like that !

Gitsplitta wrote:That thing is a beast!

Lol, thanks Gits ! It is somewhere between a dread night and an imperial knight !

So, tonight resulted in some more random tinkering , I raided the depths of the bitz skip and came out with a very incomplete demon prince to serve as a base for Little H's newly bought (actual) Dreadknight.

What do you think ?

Thanks guys ! He's posed like that specifically because I didn't have a torso back , any legs or a left arm so made some out of bits and putty !

All models need to be both built and painted at some point, and building generally comes first... Progress is progress.
