From my understanding.

In certain events, you bring along your normal fleet of 90 points.

You then get handed a black box containing 1 of 5 ships. - Either a Bajoran Interceptor, Romulan Warbird, Klingon D7/K'tinga Class, Jem Hadar Attack Fighter or a Federation Sabre class. - All new ships/cards. 'That Teri Girl' on Youtube shows the full contents of each one.

You then get a short while to make a 30 point ship up out of the contents/cards of one of these boxes.

That then gives you a 120 point fleet which you use for the remainder of the tournament.

In 'the collective' that's the case, yeah. Folk seem pretty happy to trade post tourney though. The Klingon ship is very potent in the scenario, the fed ship is sought after by all the Hu - mons, so even if you don't pull the alternate jem'hadar attack ship you.could quite feasibly trade for one.

Before I go further with this game, reading up here and elsewhere, am I going to find that many strong ships and cards are 'event prizes' or something and end up spending daft money on ebay for rare ships or a single card?

I'm a tabletop wargamer and don't want to get into a MtG style game, I like a tactical game with a reasonable fleet of models on the table rather than a stack of funky combo cards stacking up to make some horribly powerful deck.

There isn't a gaming community near me playing this, I don't want to get into hardcore tournaments.
You do not need any of the expensive prize ships to get the most out of the game (they aren't even important for many competitive builds in the current meta). It's unfortunate that a couple of the smaller factions (Vulcans, Bajorans, and Ferengi) have prize ships, because it means that you need the those ships in order to flesh out a complete fleet for those factions. That said, the Federation, Borg, Klingons, Dominion, and Romulans can all field very capable fleets without ever putting any of the prize ships on the table. Don't worry, the game isn't a scam to get you to buy rares off of eBay.

I disagree with this statement. The Flagship cards make your ship that much better, adding +1 to three of the four stats, and granting extra abilities/upgrade bar. For 10 SP, and the only way to get them is participating in the Dominion OP 4. I haven't seen a player that has them not use them yet, they are that good. Another one is the Attack Die (Dominion OP 1), and the upcoming Counter Attack die. I would agree on the ships though- so far, none of them are a "must have" except the USS Yeager/Saber Class Cruiser from Collective OP 3. That thing is a flying gunboat. FYI- its ability is "If you discard a target lock to attack with Photon Torpedoes, do not disable the Photon Torpedoes". The crew card that comes with it while is not all that good against non-Borg (Sulu is better), is a champion/must have vs. Borg. Dominion players seem to swear by the Breen ship Rav Laerst. Good ship, good Captain card, and great eltie tactics card. To face someone that has access to all those OP prizes and you have none is a very frustrating experience. I didn't start playing this game until May (I'm normally an X-Wing player), and attended the Tholian Web event. My first opponent had one 100 point Borg Sphere with all the "special" cards. It was really fun facing an opponent that could throw 10 attack dice in a 360 arc at me. I managed to do I think 2-3 hits on his Ablative Shield Generator. Then he bent me over the table and said in a Borg voice "Resistance is futile. You will be @$$ raped". LOL Ok he didn't say that, but it sure felt like it. Left a pretty bad taste in my mouth such that I got onto eBay that night and spent close to $100 on cards and a couple ships.

It's not that the OP ships are, well, OP. It's the cards that come with them that you will want to use on other ships. This is where Wizkids shine: the Organized Play support is absolutely fantastic. Show up to play and you are pretty much guaranteed to get a participation prize (like the above mentioned Flagship cards or attack die). Win the whole event and you get a ship. How can you beat that?!?!

I'm not a tourney guy so take these feeling with the 0.02 they're worth. Those fleet captain cards are awesome and easily attainable from eBay for less then $10 shipping included. You'd pay that much or more for a warcaster upgrade like the squire so I feel it's worth it. Same with the hideki fighters. Payed less then $10. Some of the OP stuff is great but it's easily attainable.

Luckily, the resources are fairly easy to get.

I actually have all of the resources from the first set of tournaments despite not ever playing at a single one. I got most of them for free due to some really nice people out there!

Very nice looking cards. No idea why Garak is Dominion faction, but you don't pay penalty for him regardless so it hardly matters.

Not sure how fussed I am to get the cloaked ships you have to buy to get these though...

Well, there goes me selling me soul to ebay for the DS9 cards...
Although I suspect they'll be bundled with the Xmas release of DS9 itself.

I do like these cards, but I don't feel that any of them are game changing must haves. I will not be able to make it to GenCon, so I will sit and wait to see if the are coming in the November retail DS9 release. The solicit for the DS9 does say "exact game components subject to change". So I am willing to bet those sneaky little tribbles at WK are going to throw something in there. The "exclusive" part about these could just be that they are being offered outside the DS9 model, but who knows for sure

I think Quark and T'Kar are the most useful, maybe T'Rul too. The rest seem ok to me. To get the full use of Garak you have to buy a talent, I thin the cheapest is 2 points. So that is a minimal investment of 6 points, I think that is a bit much. I also don't like how his abilities off set each other.

personally, regarding OP resources, if you dont have them and no one has spares for you,

just print off the rules for them and use that.

as far as I and everyone else I know is concerned, if wiz kids dont sell it, you can make it yourself and play with it.

I did the first blind booster pack, and TOTALLy lucked out getting the klingon one when I brought my klingons... holy balls, this is a good ship, one of the few that makes me feel they NEED to release these to the general public as the ship and the cards are definately things that klingon players need in their fleet.

I also managed to snag the jager too as someone owed me a ship, its pretty decent, but not as "must have" as the klingon one.

So,apparently a lot of people are ticked off, and I mean in a BIG way about those DS9 cards at gen con...

If WK plans on releasing them in the DS9 Retail Release, they better say so sooner rather than later, people are MAADD!

It is becoming quite the heated topic over on BGG. I am not going to loose my mind just yet, there is plenty of opportunity for WK to release them down the road. I expect we will see them in the DS9 or at least the same characters with different text. We should also be getting another Sisko in the mirror universe Defiant, which I believe is a September or October release. So we all just need to stay calm and trek on

Have WK clarified how you get the GC promos? Is it buying one sparkly ship, all the sparkly ships... ?

Reading the link I put up earlier, it seems to suggest a boxed set with the sparkly ships and all the cards shown and 'additional stuff'...

Actually in "Shattered Mirror" the human rebels had to trick Sisko into crossing over so he could help them fix the Defiant. Sisko captained the ship in its first engagement and Smiley was the helmsman. We didn't see Smiley as captain until "The Emperor's New Cloak".

True enough, I was thinking about mirror sisko rather than "our" sisko.
@mgs - yeah. Boo, etc. Although I have found a pal who's going and she's going to at least look for them for me.

With the blind boosters, are they usually subsidised a bit as part of the entry price to the event? Or are you stuck paying the full whack for a random ship, plus the entry fee?

My stores are just charging $15 for the blind ship and no entry fee. $15 is the cost of a regular booster in the USA.

Na, I just realized the other day that I didn't have one. So now after taking inventory I believe the only ship I don't have is the 8472 bishop. I have nothing against them just not much of an interest. At this point though I believe my days of getting everything are about at a close. Unless there is something earth shattering in the expansion I don't see my self buying the NX clas Enterprise. Just not a fan of the show. The Praetus looked awesome and is Romulan so that was a must and I wanted the Somraw for TOS games. Archer and gang didn't really do much for me.

I was hoping to avoid buying the retail Vulcan Surok class, since I picked up a T'mur, but I have a friend that is thinking of playing and he loves Vulcans. Nobody is perfect. Hirogen and Vidian may be interesting as will retail Tholians.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I also don't really care for mirror universe stuff either. So unless there is something awesome in them, those packs are doubtful.

The main page for attack wing on boardgamegeek lists all the expansions coming out through February 2015. Be prepared, the page is full of banner adds so it takes a while to load on a phone or tablet.

So, I tried making up some fleets for what I figured would be a pretty awesome huge star trek game, using most of my collection.

I came to 200 points for a sensible version of my Dominion fleet - 1 of all the current releases (Battleship, 5th Wing Patrol Ship, Kraxon, Koronak, Gor Portas). Needless to say, I felt a little disappointed.

Surprsingly, for my 200 point federation fleet, I ended up cramming in the Enterprise, Enterprise-D, Defiant, Voyager and the Excelsior, with me not being too stingy on the upgrades.

Can someone explain a few things to me. What is faction pure? Are you telling me Captain Picard can command a Romulan ship?

What is considered Pure? Ships only, like Picard commanding the Enterprise D only but not the original or A, or he can command anything Federation?

There is 3 major mindsets in playing right now:

Mixed faction: mix whatever you want as long as you pay the faction penalty.

Faction Pure: all ships, captains, and upgrades must be of the same faction.

Ship Pure: fleet may be of different factions, but faction of the ship must be the same as the captain & upgrades on it.

Faction Pure usually refers to only taking units and fleets with the same Faction symbol on them. - So includes ships and captains and crew being all the same.

You also have what's commonly called "Ship Pure" which is, you can field a mix of ships from different factions in your fleet, however only Federation Upgrades on a Federation ship.

As far as I know, there's no name for insisting that ship contents only stay on the ship they came with, eg Picard only on the Enterprise D. Except for the blind boosters in the events mentioned earlier that is.

I do however, end up feeling uneasy though if I put things obviously wrong. - Like Picard on Voyager and Janeway on the Enterprise D in the same fleet.

In the 'standard' rules, every captain and ship can be mixed in every which way you want, however putting a card on a ship belonging to a different faction costs an extra point over what is printed on the card.
