Hey gang,

My local gaming store runs a 500 point 40K game every Tuesday. The only rule is that you must have 1 unit of troops (but with 7th, that may have changed.) Here is a Battle-forged army I came up with that I feel is also quite thematic. Any suggestions for modifications or best use of the force would be appreciated.

Tau Rapid Response Cadre
500 Points

HQ
Cadre Fireblade (Generally attaches to Team Alpha)

Troops
Fire Warrior Team Alpha
10 Fire Warriors
1 Markerlight Drone
Devilfish dedicated transport with TL-SMS

Fire Warrior Team Beta
10 Fire Warriors
1 Markerlight drone
Devilfish dedicated transport with a seeker missile
2 attached gun drones

Fast Attack
Piranha with Fusion Blaster and a seeker missile
2 attached gun drones.

Please let me know what people thing and how best to play this cadre.

Thanks for the comments so far. This is my revised list based on the suggestions to add some Seeker Missile for AT work. In addition I added some Markerlight support to boost the missiles effectiveness.

For the Greater Good!
Duncan

This is what I'd run

Fireblade

6x Fire Warriors
Devilfish

6x Fire Warriors
Devilfish

3x Piranhas
Fusion Blasters

Interesting choices. Sadly I don't have 3 Piranhas, only 1. Something tells me they are better in groups.

Thanks,
Duncan

My main issue was your lack of AT.

Go with an ethereal instead of Fireblade. When you drop out of the vehicle you're considered moving so the Fireblade's bonus won't count. The Ethereal will get rid of the need for the Shas'ui so that's 2 more fire warriors you can buy, and his extra shot will count for both squads. Other than that It looks like a fun list.

Something like this might be good:

Ethereal

Fire Warriors x 10 w/ Fish(Smart Missile System, 2x Seeker Missile)
Fire Warriors x 10 w/ Fish(Smart Missile System, 1x Seeker Missile)

Piranha w/ Fusion and 2x Seeker Missile

That should be exactly 500 points.

The piranha can move 12 and shoot 2 guns at full BS so you can pop both missiles at long range turn 1 at a vehicle.
Fish have 3 missiles between the two of them, this spreads out your AT capability over 3 units so if one gets blown up you still have 2 vehicles with missiles.

Fire Warriors will get 60 shots within 15" with the Ethereal.
Fish get 8 S5 AP5 shots, 4 of which are TL and ignore cover, which will wreck anything with 5+ armor in 500 points.

Hmm, well, I wish I had an ethereal now. Something to shop for at GenCon.

Interesting idea on the seeker missiles. I never really looked at them for this group as I was not packing Markerlights. However, they can still be used, just not nearly as cool. Maybe I will see about reducing the Fire Warriors some to get a few missiles. The Fire Blade has a Markerlight and some Markerlight Drones might help. Let me see what I can come up with.

Thanks for the good suggestions.

Marker drones are bad unless you bring a drone controller, so that's more points. I wouldn't take marker drones in a mechanized list, it's BS 2 and will spend 1/2 the game sitting in a Fish. In this size list markerlights will be better spent on the tanks or fire warriors than a seeker missile. BS3 seeker missiles aren't terrible. Ethereal is overall a lot better than the fireblade, though perhaps not as thematic for this list. Dropping those two marker drones will buy you a SMS for the other Fish, which you really need, and leave you with 14 points, that will buy another seeker missile and leave 6 points, you could put BSFs on the vehicles to ignore night fighting. You really need the SMS on any fish, 4 TL BS3 shots that ignore cover and don't need LOS at 30" is way better than 4 TL BS2 shots at 18" range.

Hey gang,

I ran this last Tuesday night against some Chaos Space Marines. Full battle report here:

Note that I have an error on this list. Fire Warriors units can not take Drones without the Shas'ui. Oops.

Thanks,
Duncan

Was going to mention that.

Also tactic note with the Ethereal instead of having him get out with the warriors, try leaving in the fish. As an IC, he can do that, and increases the storm of fire size by the DF foot print. Also the the DF GD's benefit from the power.
