So there's a guy at my LGS who's interested in starting Warmachine (he already knows which faction he's going to start with, Menoth) and is planning on getting the Menoth box when he can afford it. The store does have a Press Ganger, but neither of us can be there on the dedicated Warmachine nights.

I've long told him I'll happily get a starter of my own to play against him with, which I can match up with him on as he grows his collection. I've considered the Cygnar starter, since I already have Cygnar and don't have PStryker or a Charger and can easily "match" him when he makes new purchases with my existing models.

I'm also considering using this as an opportunity to start a Hordes army (which I'm relatively unfamiliar with, as I never really played it). I haven't decided on either Skorne or Circle, though Circle would be rather appropriate for the background. My main concern here would be introducing the Hordes rules along with Warmachine ones which could confuse a new player.

Which would you suggest? Go with the Cygnar starter which I would have a bit more experience with and can easily fill in with as he purchases models while keeping the rules uniform, or get a Hordes starter which would cause some confusion earlier on but introduce him to those rules so he won't be as confused when he runs into other players using them?

Whichever you'd like really.

Hordes vs Warmachine won't cause a ton of confusion. Its just a different way of running your battle group. 10 minutes of explanation and you're good.

Or you could split a starter set with him and take the Khador half.

I started warmachine and my friend often played his Legion. I found it easier to learn the basics against the same system.

Just my 2 cents.

Well, if you started with a hordes box, they would also be able to learn a bit about the hordes mechanics as well as their own, which would pay off in the long run, while maybe initially slowing them down a little.

With starting hordes, you also get to satisfy that itch to start a new faction. And from what I've heard, pStryker is not very fun to play, so maybe missing him out of your collection wouldn't be too bad for you.

pStryker isn't so much not fun as it is him simply not being interesting.

He's a very vanilla caster. Nothing super special.

Thanks guys, I'm going to go with the Cygnar set I think. While we can discuss Hordes stuff later it's probably best to go with what I know best if I'm going to be helping teach somebody else to play.
