he guys, im new to warhammer (though not new to miniature wargaming) and after looking at the iob box set for afew years i finaly decided to buy the elf part and rulebok.
ive always liked the lore for em and most of the minis are appealing, ive been wargaming for awhile now,
i crrentl play: war rocket, infinity, malifaux and dsytopian wars.
so ive been reading the forums and getting a good idea of the things i need, im not a competitive player, i prefer fun (i dont win often and im ok with that) but i like to have a playable list
so heres what i got so far

* Prince (337pts)
Griffon (150pts), Lance (7pts), Dragon armour (20pts) Longbow (5pts)

20x Shield (20pts)

+ Special + (360pts)

* Standard Bearer (10pts) Shrieking blade (10pts)

+ Rare + (100pts)

* Great Eagle (50pts)
Great Eagle (50pts)

this took me awhile, as you can see im using the models from island of blood (they are what drew me in) m first purchase after this was another 10 seaguard, only things i havent got yet is the eagles and pheonix guard. my first list only had 10 archers with a tiranoc chariot, but seemed not needed with the reavers and eagles
so any help would be awsome

Courageous Silver Helm

For a starting army and something to have fun with this is pretty decent. I don't think you can do much better using simply the IoB set and some additional bits. As for the bits you are adding, I think you've chosen well! PG are awesome at the moment.

As a small aside, Griffons are not that useful at the moment as they are relatively easy to kill for such an expensive monster. I would say it's a fine choice for now but if you get more competitive later on it might be worth changing out for something else.

yeah i understand the griffon aint that good, and im ok with that this model was the big deal for me so it was an auto include, and i figure i an swap round noble prince, mage archmage as the point cos isnt much different when all kitted out,
im feeling hopefull that little needs to be changed on this list, and in the possable chance of expanding i would defs use a different lord build

In that case I would say it looks pretty good. I wouldn't bother with the magic weapons on the unit champions but its not a terrible idea if you have free points. As for expanding, I would continue to add to the units you have to start with as you start to get a feel for the game.

I also started high elves with an IoB set recently! Though it is my third army in WHFB. The models are really nice and I couldn't help myself.

I'd say drop the longbow on the Prince and take a magic weapon with a little more hitting power. Maybe the star lance or a sword of might or striking? You should also check out the golden helm of atrazar and the charmed shield to make him more survivable. Basically, it gives you decent odds of bouncing a few cannonballs off of you if you position him right.

I'd also recommend dropping the magic weapon on the bladelord. It's a nice option but really you want him getting 3 attacks with his great weapon at I5.

Otherwise, looks great for an out-of-the-box starter army! For the future you'll probably want to bulk out your special blocks, and maybe get a couple of bolt throwers. For core I think archers and reavers are the real standouts. People also seem to be going for big blocks of silver helms, as well.

the golden helm seemed cool but it was a one use only item :S so i didnt think it was worth it,
i figured with the charmed shield he would have enough of an armour save to protect himself 2+ armour save all up,
for some reason i thought it would make the blademasters sword "fear" i dont know why lol
i really wanted silver helms but the models are soo crappy i had to avoid them
if i drop the blademasters sword i can upgrade the princes magic weapon but i figured the armour peircing was good

That's a valid concern. The answer is it is absolutely worth it, especially since your opponent has to HIT you and WOUND you before you even need to roll the 2+ to negate. So if their cannon rolls a one it's still good, unlike the charmed shield.

Cannons and bolt throwers ignore armor, so having something to deal with those is a must. Tally of preservation is also a good idea. I wouldn't bother using it to protect a lvl 2 mage. Even a lvl 4 I'd rather just stick him in a unit with magic resistance (MR).

I feel the exact same way about silver helms, lol. So far I've made my entire army from IoB models, models from the skycutter chariot box, and converted wood elves. I really dislike the look of the old high elf models, aka all their core models...

With an item that increases your strength, you are wounding easier plus you get the benefits of AP (-1 to armor). Strength 4 is okay but he needs to be wounding people better than that. You're realistically going to be doing 1 or 2 wounds to tough 4 models, and 1 wound to monsters if you're lucky.

ok so after playing around with wargear this is what i have so far

High Elves 8th Ed (Standard) Selections: (1498pts)

+ Lords + (373pts)

* Prince (373pts)
Griffon (150pts), Lance (7pts), Heavy armour (6pts)

+ Heroes + (140pts)

* Mage (120pts)
Lore of high magic, Lvl 2 (35)
* Magic Items (pts) Talisman of protection (15pts) Charmed shield (5pts)

+ Core + (535pts)

* Archers (160pts)
15x Archer (100pts), Longbow, Musician (10pts)

* Ellyrian Reavers (105pts)
Elven Steed, Light Armor
* 5x Ellyrian Reaver (95pts), Harbinger (10pts)
5x Spears and Bows (15pts)

* Lothern Sea Guard (270pts)
Bow, Light Armor, Musician (10pts), Sea Master (10pts), Spear, Standard Bearer (10pts)
* 20x Sea Guard (220pts)
20x Shield (20pts)

+ Special + (350pts)

* Phoenix Guard (190pts)
Halberd, Heavy Armor, Musician (10pts), 10x Phoenix Guard (180pts), Keeper of the flame (10)
* Standard Bearer (10pts) Banner of eternal flame (10pts)

* Sword Masters of Hoeth (160pts)
Great Weapon, Heavy Armor, Musician (10pts), 10x Sword Master (130pts), Bladelord (10pts)
* Standard Bearer (10pts)

+ Rare + (100pts)

* Great Eagle (50pts)
Great Eagle (50pts)

so i realised that the prince needed more protection from cannons and bolt throwers, so i thought the tally of preservation with its 4+ ward save was a good idea, i dropped his armour down the heavy because with his sheild and mount he has a 3+ armour save and the dragon armour gave him a 2+ plus and a 6+ ward which the tall knockes out, i was gonna give him the gold helm of atraar but i couldnt fit it in, at this point level i only have 375 points allowed for him, the mage was confusing, the charmed sheild seemed alright ( though the golden helm might be better) i wasnt sure what to give him if anything.
if you guys have any more ideas that would be great, the wargear part is abt difficult for me to grasp

Two quick points regarding your heroes...

1 - Seeing as the Prince has taken a magic weapon he must always use it in combat, so the lance is useless.

2 - Wizards cannot take magic armour unless they have access to mundane armour as standard or are able to take it via upgrades.

oh, i did not know that, i just read it in the book.
which is worth take over the other? lance or magic sword?
the mage i was just gonna give him the golden crown of atrazar
and the tally or protection
and the prince keep everything but the magic weapon and maybe give him a long bow and the eagles shredding talons to fill up points
hows dat?

Id find a way to get the Ogre Blade (+2S) on the prince.
Mage would be better off with just a dispel scroll and hiding in a bunker to gain a Look Out Sir so you can bolster your magic defines without it costing him a great deal of protection.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
i was alil concerned about the prince only having a lance and no magic weapon, seems dumb that i cant use the lnce on the charge and a magic weapon in other combat,
so far the prince has a 2+ armour save including the mount and a 4+ ward save with the talisman, i was gonna go with the dragon armour but its only 5+ ward, i a considering droping the some stuff to get that golden crown of atrazar, but not sure
