I wish my local community was quicker to support games other than the "top three" in our hobby.

I had to back out of All Quiet's KS due to financial reasons, but I really wanted to go in for $500+. Seeing these just makes me regret not being able to do so, while also mourning the fact that this cool little game will never... EVER... see play in my community.

You know, I love Warmahordes and 40k... but it annoys me that I feel "forced" to play them, as they're the only games with a local player-base.

I literally GIVE AWAY $100's in Mantic models which I get periodically due to working with them as a writer, and still can't get a Dreadball league going...

*sigh* Sorry for venting... that Ironclad just gives me nerd-envy.

In my area I barely hear of anyone even playing the big three, so count yourself lucky that there are even wargamers in you area. Games like this look awesome, but I'd have to buy and paint both sides just to get a friend to play.

I wouldn't mind playing the game, but I probably wouldn't collect it due to not having the painting time.

The plastic tripods and tanks are really cool.

Perhaps the UK is different? I'm not aware of a game with good UK distribution that doesn't get played locally. All of the Mantic stuff, all of the GW stuff, all of the Warlord stuff, some of the spratan stuff, malifaux, infinity, dropzone, warmahordes, and a bunch of other stuff besides... it all gets played.

And that's without getting into the miniatures board games like zombicide, dust etc... those end up with loads of players too.

Squig: In MOST of the US, table-top gaming is just considered such an odd hobby. We don't have as much of a tradition (as GW made seeing hobby-shops on every street-corner normal for you guys), and as such, unless you're in a VERY densely populated area, you can expect to drive 1hr plus to find any place to play a game.

As such, those locations only end up supporting the most "sure-fire" games with the biggest populations.

Here in upstate NY you can play WH40k, Warmahordes, and MAYBE Malifaux/Flames of War, if you are willing to drive an hour. If I drive two-hours to NYC then I can perhaps find a slightly broader range of played games.

And as I said, I recently started a Mantic play-drive of sorts, giving away twelve DB teams which came out of my own Mantic credit/pocket... and I still couldn't get people to come back week on week.

I think the 'pick up' games culture of a lot of the USA is why there is such a heavy presence of the major games

Rocking up to a store to play a random stranger you really have to be sure somebody there will play what you bring, so you go for something common

The more club or group of friends set up in the uk lead to people talking over their games in advance a lot more, so you know who and what you're going out to play, so no harm trying out something new, and if you like it it can easily become a regular system for the local scene

neither system is wrong, you just end up with slightly different results

I think this is perfect reasoning.

I play 40k/Fantasy because I know that I can find other players at my store. Were I in a game club that alternated games every week, I would probably play other games too.

Less to do with that - and more to do with people who play in stores are looking through a keyhole at their local game scene. Most gaming in the US does not happen in stores, or clubs but in peoples houses. If you are looking for a pickup game at a game store - you will find only the popular games, because those players tend to be that type of person. For the less common games, they are played quite often in dining rooms and game rooms across the country. Those do tend to be planned out to some extent (if nothing else than asking what miniatures they should bring to a Friday night game night) and because of the more casual nature (and the ability to easily exclude those who don't mesh well) it is very common to see dozens of different games being played.

Ah yes, I get a lot of messages to make trays for these.

I did the All Quiet on the Martian Front Kickstarter and I got my first wave a few weeks ago - absolutely awesome models and the rulebook is fantastic.

In the UK though? No one near me has the models so I can't do anything :/

Wanted to get them made before my kickstarter ends.

Alien Dungeon went the pay for the rules route, rather than giving them away for free. I can appreciate them wanting to make money, but it does not help the game get a foothold in the community.

I heard that the rules that come in the starter set do not contain the information to build armies. Thus, if you are interested, the best option is to buy the actual rulebook.

The good news is that I have heard that it is fun to play and that it is well balanced.

I also went to Historicon (I live about a 45 minute/hour drive away and it doesn't take much to convince me to jump in the Camaro for a sunny day road trip) and took a bunch of pics of the setup for the giant, giant AQotMF game they had going on. The table must have been like 20 feet by 5 feet or so.

What's the height of the tripods? They look 120-140mm

65mm bases right?

Thanks, will have to get some.

Will be very interesting designing trays for them.

Cheers!

Edit: I only play GW games :/ But my heavy 36 infantry tray and bike tray fit FoW tanks though.

I have both and yeah, the starter rules are definitely a starter/reference book. But from what I remember the forces in the box set are two equal points cost armies.

Though the full hardcover rulebook is just absolutely stellar and worth every penny. Full color too.

I'm looking forward to painting my AQotMF stuff simply due to the fact that it's a million times easier than all the KoW infantry I've been painting Chrome spray the tripods, pick out details... Olive Drab spray the tanks, drybrush... done

Thanks for all the info judgedoug!

I must say, All Quiet seems to hearken to a place that 40k has fulfilled for me in the past- WWI-style tanks with some cool aliens to fight! I've wanted something between the Dystopian Wars and Warhammer 40k scales, and this should fit the bit well.

Plus, tanks! Tons of cool tanks!

No prob guys. I'm surprised Alien Dungeon doesn't have better representation on the various forums.

OH btw gents, while it appears to be 15mm it was actually designed at HO-Scale - so more like 18mm - so that you can use the plethora of cheap train HO-Scale plastic turn of the century buildings you can find in any scale train shop or online.

Well the rules ARE written by Rick Priestley (father of 40k) and Alessio Cavatore (father of 40k 5th) :

But, seriously, the rules seem really really really good.

For those that want to know how the rules are, there's an excellent review here
