Hey there, Dakka.

A friend just kicked off a new Kickstarter for modular area terrain for wargaming today, and I thought I'd help spread the word. Worldsmith Industries ran a kickstarter selling resin wreck markers last year, and delivered in spades. This time they're back with something a bit more general-use:

There are a number of different area bases to choose from, along with different terrain plugs to drop in there to round out your board. He's also got:

Water features:

Tombstone and graveyard sets:

Crates and Barrels

and Objective Markers.

This is a quality caster here, and some great products. Here's a link to the campaign:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/48375726/resin-terrain-for-miniature-gaming

Thanks for looking!

I like it. But really, come on, shipping is included in all pledges for US backers, but International backers need to pay ANOTHER $60 on top of what already has been baked into the existing pledges.

Pledge $100 pay another $60 for shipping alone. No, I'd rather wait for an European retailer I'm afraid. :/

I was really excited, until I learned the trees weren't actually included.

Good looking forest terrain is hard to find...

I'll keep an eye on this one still though.

He suggests woodland scenics trees and the flat bases.

Unfortunately, US shipping to ROW is really expensive.

Huh, looking at another US based KS, it's $8-12 extra for a bunch of resin tanks to anywhere in the world.

That tank Ks is going to bleed money on shipping. Costs a lot more than that to ship RoW.

You should ask them about that, BrookM.

Can every US based kickstarter thread simply include an auto post that says "Shipping costs suck, we know, move on". Its literally the very first post after the initial one lol

Shipping out of the US is crazy expensive while any domestic shipping is quite cheap so it makes sense that international buyers have to pay a ton.. it sucks but that's the reality of the world nowadays for mail service.

This stuff looks pretty cool if you want to switch up you terrain types per game.. ALthough hard to beat the GF9 terrain.

True. Either that or put in a serious effort of finding a way to get a shipping partner from inside Europe. These high rates are sort of seriously limiting the market, and it is already a very small niche market to begin with.

Does Gale Force 9 still do the larger scale green trees?

I thought they discontinued them?

Only trees they got right now are Autumn trees on the Flames of War site, in both 10-15mm scale and 28mm.

Re: Trees

Hi all – Some people have asked questions about what trees might work best with the tree stump inserts, so I pieced together a quick video showing some of the tree options with which I’ve experimented. While I can’t say for certain whether one specific tree type would work, I imagine most model railroad trees would work just fine (with only the occasional need for a bit of modeling know-how).

4c458db02ffc4c8ef3a4e4629df4c1ed h264 high PLAY
In the video, the trees I reference are:

1) Woodland Scenics Tree Armatures (TR1123), 12 Deciduous, 5” to 7”, Approx. $12 for 12.

2) JTT Scenery Products Scenic Spruce (Item #92027), 4” to 6”, Approx. $30 for 24.

3) Cobblestone Corners Collectibles, 4” to 5”, $1 for 2, available seasonally at Dollar Tree in the US.

4) Games Workshop Citadel Wood, $30 for 3.

While I would ultimately like to carry trees from a variety of manufacturers for folks to purchase, I won’t be doing so for this Kickstarter. For more info, see “What about the trees?” in the project FAQ.

Wow! Funded in 57 minutes! I didn’t expect that, but I really, really appreciate it. Thanks a million! I'd like to address a couple of questions that have popped up:
.

1) The $19 pledge level for $12 of goods is not a typo. The extra $7 is to cover shipping smaller orders. I’ve come to see shipping costs as the great enemy for Kickstarters. I toyed around with a bunch of different options, including charging shipping costs after the Kickstarter was over, and charging more for all terrain pieces to cover the costs of shipping. I ended settling with charging a flat fee to absorb some shipping costs for smaller orders, while absorbing the cost of (domestic) shipping myself for orders over $100. If you’re confused about pledge levels, please let me know and I’ll do my best to clear things up!

.

2) Stretch goals. This time around, I decided to put everything I wanted to produce out there from the outset, rather than build up through a stretch goal model. While I don’t have any stretch goals planned, I am planning on creating a series of video tutorials over the course of the campaign. How to prepare and paint the models. How to create water effects. A guide to model trees that I know fit the inserts well. Heck, if folks are interested, I’d even be open to showing the process I use to create and cast models. Casting is one of those skills that many folks think is intimidating, but is actually relatively straight-forward (and fun). Let me know what catches your fancy, and I’ll see what I can do.

.

3) With that said, if you have ideas for additional inserts or other terrain types you’d like to see, please let me know! I can’t promise anything beyond the original offerings for this campaign, but I’m always interested in new ideas.

.

Thanks again for your support and, if you know others who might be interested in this terrain, please feel free to spread the word!

Warmly,

Jim

I was absolutely in for the objective markers, clicked the link, $20 shipping for a $12 item, which is physically small and light?

It isn't too expensive but it does require a bit more work. They can package and ship through amazon.

Not $20 worth of a pain it isn't. I've bought stuff from the US, I appreciate the Atlantic appears to require solid gold planes to traverse for some reason, and I'd even be ok with half this, but $20 seems to be placed firmly "I can't be fethed to deal with international sales for this item" territory.

It's 8 resin discs.

Just saying.

EDIT

Actually, scratch that, it's 8 resin discs, with domestic shipping costs already built into the purchase price. Just saying.

Shipping within the us is 7 dollars. To get the objective markers in the US it's 19 dollars. 12 plus 7 is 19.

Do you really believe that all US based kickstarters are colluding to extort superfluous shipping costs from Britain?

OBJECTIVES - A set of 8 objective markers. This pledge level includes shipping in the US. Any number of additional objective sets can be added as add-ons by increasing your pledge by $12 per set but other (non-objective marker) add-ons are not allowed at this level.

Estimated delivery: Feb 2015
Add $20 USD to ship outside the US

No, I've made a personal decision that paying an extra $20 to ship something that costs $12 including domestic shipping that is neither physically bulky nor heavy isn't worth it, and then a bunch of people seem to expect me to justify that decision to them for some reason?

Small items shipping internationally is a pain. There are more options than just shipping flat rate and through the postal service though. There are both pros and cons for shipping through other means but it does have some added benefits. Here is some useful information though:

There are also other warehouses that you can arrange to ship too. You would palette up a large shipment and ship it to them, then they would ship locally to Europe. The big thing to understand about US shipping to Europe is they don't just get charged the product + shipping, they have to pay VAT/custom fees on the item as well. For lower amounts that isn't too bad but it can add up. By shipping via a fulfillment center it means the shipment is considered local and they don't get charged customs but that means you have to pay it. It is also cheaper to ship one large palette, then individual smaller packages from the fulfillment center than a bunch of individual packages from the US.

Don't get me wrong they aren't always the solution either and aren't always the best choice. You do have to factor in how many orders are international vs domestic. You also have to consider how many more orders could you possibly get if shipping was more international friendly. For example the easiest one to work with is Amazon.UK. That means you could pallet up a shipment to them, ship out your Kickstarter via a ship list directly from Amazon. You can also keep a few on hand at the center there which means you have a means to sell and continue distribute the product there. You could also set a future sell date, only ship to just Kickstarter and close up shop. The big question is whether there are plans to sell after-Kickstarter and what methods for distribution you plan to use then.

But there are always options. The answer should never be "International Shipping is always expensive, deal with it". Sometimes it may just be the answer but it shouldn't be until all the options available have been looked at.
