You will read on dakka that some people think many of the books are terrible. But bear in mind everyone has their own tastes. Whilst I believe it true that it is far from the best series around, I have still found every book (aside from the space wolf one - can't remember its name, it was so dull), entertaining.
My favourite authors are terry goodkind, bernard cornwell, conn igulden, anthony riches etc, so if you like those authors you may have a similar taste to me. Best bet is to try them. The first 3 are excellent (imo).
There are quite a few and they cost a bit, so me and my mate buy alternate ones and hand them over to one another when done. Saves a few bob.

Ahhh fair enough. Most people refer to that as 30k.

Personally, I think the Legion and Mechanicum armies are an amazing breath of fresh air.
The Legions give a new way to play Space Marines without being the same Space Marines that everyone has been playing all these years (the differences in army construction, the specialization of the units, the different Legions themselves, and the lack of ATSKNF make a big difference in playstyle).
The Mechanicum allows you to make an elite army of monstrous creatures (Castellax and Thanatars) and mini-monstrous creatures (Thallax) in a low model count force with entirely new weapons and special rules.
The first problem you'll face is whether or not your local gaming group(s) have a problem with Forgeworld rules. After that, just make sure that your opponents know all of your army's rules upfront. The 30K armies are perfectly compatible with 40K armies (but there are a few 7th Edition rules issues you may have to deal with). Some people may complain about aspects of the 30K armies being too powerful, but that's really more a matter of them being different and new, rather than being genuinely overpowered. It's no different than playing against any other army you're not familiar with.

You're going to need a lot of models. At times, I've found one or two games were a bit like imperial gaurd mobs with space marines. Lot's of fun fielding squads of predators and squads of land raiders. I find that a lot of legion armies benefit from having mechanicum allies, but I went with Iron warriors so take that as you will. I generally don't feel like any one army is weaker than another, but that's just from the few games I've played. Only really works at high point games, 1800+ at least. It's pretty fun I've found, especially with how individualistic each legion is.

That's a very good point. The Legion armies are set up to encourage larger unit sizes. For most units, you pay a higher upfront cost for the first part of it, but less points for every marine you add to it. Example: 10 Legion Tactical Marines are 150 points, but 20 of them will be 250 points.

I too would like to get into heresy era gaming, but the costs are prohibitively high and the rest of my gaming group aren't all that enthused by the prices. Sad face.

I have never played a game with the HH miniatures from Forgeworld but one of my pals have. If you've got the money it should be alright. Just don't expect to play with SM in the usual way.
