I was curious about this because a lot of them look the same in several versions, equipmentwise. It seems just buying the cards is a far cheaper way to go than getting every version.

It is about ease of recognition more than anything. Which version of Haley is that on the table? Your model is pHaley but you are playing eHaley?

It might be fine and dandy with your friends in a pick up game, but then any sort of substitution/proxy could be fine that way. I used a Shaw model as a Crosse substitiue as my ordered model had not arrived yet in a game last sat. My opponent was fine with that. I wouldn't pull that in a tourny though, just because it is confusing to my opponent.

For trying out a new version between friends, its fine.

Things change and it becomes a big no-no if you do it in tournaments, especially in timed tournaments where people are expected to recognize a miniature in a glance.

Personally I never do it but that is because I'm a bit of a completionist got to catch them all kind of guy, but plenty of my friends do it in casual games.

There's also more to the different versions if they have the same weapon. Sorcha1 and Sorcha2 have the same weapon, but Sorcha2 is wearing an entirely different set of armor(which is actually easier to tell from the rear). Once you have the two in hand, it's easier to see that the models are extremely different despite the few similarities.

I was planning an eSorscha conversion based off one of the (many, many) pSorscha models, so I'm curious about this myself.

In tournaments its a big no for the most part. Its always at the TOs discretion, but I think thats very much based on WHAT the conversion is. My Extreme Behemoth conversion usually gets an okay because it's enourmous, and has the Behemoths signature parts.

Other things like warcasters are a bit different, I don't think a TO would be okay with me taking pSorcha, changing Frostfang a bit and calling her eSorcha.

The general rule is you need 50% of the original model for it to be tournament legal.

I dunno where you guys find out where to buy single cards, but here in our country buying a card directly from the Privateer Press with the shipping it become almost as expensive as buying a Warcaster (around 10-12$). So... for a dollar or two more, I have a brand new miniature from my local store.

If you a real Warmachine player, you willing to pay that money for miniature. Otherwise, I will assume you are one of those greedy GW players that turn on Warmachine because it was "less" expansive than GW products. Warmachine is not an alternative, it is pure joy! So buy the Epic version what ever it is and play with it!!!

*I am not attacking you personnaly, I just make fun of the situation.

The other side of the internet

My friend plays both versions of Sorcha with the same model. I always have to re-ask which one he is playing. Honestly, I MUCH prefer people to play the version they're playing or even a conversion. Its confusing and lazy even for casual games to use one model for dual purposes.

Me and my usually circle of gamers are generally fine with proxies. However as I get more and more into a game then my needs for the actual models tend to win over the need to save a few pennies!

But if the wife asks.... it's a conversion!

Need more 's in my life!

Yeah, I let sculpts dictate what I'm playing, actually.

So I won't field Grissel1 because I much prefer the model
for Grissel2, for example.

Thats how I do it. If you don't like the model, don't play the caster.

I just buy the deck and use the cards. I come out way ahead on the money saved over buying the actual miniatures. Since I don't play in tournaments, it's no biggie.

That works too until you want to start post mk2
transition models. Though I guess warroom would
work just fine in that capacity.

Obviously no-one is ordering a single card then paying international shipping. Many people order bits for conversions directly from PP, in which case you might pay a few more $$ for a handful of cards.

In my case it's not about the money, it's because I like the model much more. I know some people only care about the tactical gameplay, but it leaves a bitter taste in my mouth to buy, assemble, paint, then take out and put on the table a model that I don't like. I already have to do that for some models, but the Warcaster is just a step too far. I want to have the most awesome Warcaster model I possibly can - if I didn't I'd just play video games, they are ton cheaper and easier to get/play/arrange/organise/everything really.

How would you feel if he used two different Prime models (there's like 4 Prime Sorscha models), one for Prime and the other for Epic Sorscha? I realise that only solves the problem in the case of one person and not when playing with multiple people playing multiple different versions and models, so it's not exactly a perfect solution, I'm just curious if that would be enough in your case.

What if someone converted the Epic version of Sorscha (or Nemo or pretty much any model where the main difference is the pose, at least at across-the-table distance) to have the same pose as the Prime version? That's 100% of the correct model used in the conversion, making it (in theory) tourney legal, but obviously if you have trouble remembering which caster you're playing against without looking at the model while playing, it's just as bad. My point isn't that I'm trying to cheat people, just that I wouldn't have thought most people needed to see the model to remember what it does; rather that they would go into the game with "I'm playing against Epic Striker" already at the front of their thoughts. Well, that was my assumption, I really don't know either way.

Proxy is fine in friendly games with friends, just don't get bent out of shape when someone at your FLGS says no. Just be gracious and play with the models as it is.

Luckily, Locks are SUPER cheap, relatively, so personally I'd just shell out the 12 bucks and get another model to paint ^_^

I use the epic Haley miniatures for both versions of that warcaster, since the regular Haley1 miniature is horrid and the alternate is only available from the PP store. And they charge a fortune to have it delivered to Europe.
