Well it's been a long time since I posted anything on Dakka, let alone start a thread...with pictures...of a finished model no less! But it's time for all of that to change!

I've bought a lot of figures over the last few years but have struggled with motivation for painting and modelling for a variety of reasons of late. In particular, I've bought a few of the Horus Heresy series from FW but have only just got round to finishing one (despite having bought one of the first Angrons available at GD when he was first released!).

I was particularly taken with the Abaddon and Loken figures however. The first 3 HH novels are still among the Black Library's best and the figures are perfect representations of the two characters.

I actually started Abaddon over a year ago (as any readers of my blog can attest) , but have only now finished him off!

I tested out the latest additions to my paint collection, Scale75's new paint range, on this one and I have to say, I'm very impressed with them. The metallics in particular are the smoothest I have seen from an acrylic paint range. The regular colours do dry quite Matt for the most part, but this can be extremely handy too. If you want a more satin, GW range type finish, mix in a little of the ink range - simples.

Even though there were some prolonged breaks in between, I'm pretty pleased with how he has turned out. In particular, I don't think I really lost much colour/technique consistency despite the body being painted at a vastly different time from the rest.

If you are interested, there are some more pics and different angles up on my blog here:

I'm now mulling over what to paint next as I have Angron, Lokken and Horus all awaiting attention.

Would love to know what you think.

Cheers,

Dante

He's up on CMON now for those who are inclined to vote on such things - http://www.coolminiornot.com/362231

I've narrowed my choices for next figure to paint down to either Lokken (converted to Lunar Wolves is tempting) or a Wood Elf Wild Rider champion - I'm quite keen to do an elaborate forest base.

Choices, choices!

Why not work on both at the same time while waiting for paint to dry on one paint the other frustrated with one enjoy the other slightly slower on both but quicker over all.

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.

That really would be the best of both worlds - if I could do it I would!

Unfortunately, the ever growing pile of half finished projects is testament to how quickly my motivation can burnout on a project. I have a couple of recent(ish) and not-so-recent pieces that I'd like to finish one day soon (Converted FW Empire standard, Nork Deadogg, my Tanith sculpt) but I just can't quite seem to find the inspiration for them right now.

I have started cleaning up the WE wild rider I mentioned before - desire to do am elaborate forest base won out.

@Jah - a lot of fun indeed!

Creating a nice base is very satisfying indeed. I'm hoping to go for something with a feeling of plenty of wild, dense foliage but on a fairly compact space - we'll see how it goes!

@Pekel - too kind my friend, but that you !

The maestro returns ... Seriously sublime paintwork , that showcases the model to perfection. Also thanks for the heads up on that paint range . I have been looking for a range that dries very matte for a while.

Cheers matey!

Yes, the Scale75 range is a curren favourite I mine - I've purchased pretty much the whole range over the last few months as a result!

The coverage is generally good, terrific range of tones and shades and the fact that they dry so matte gives a range of different possibilities to boot. Worth a look - particularly the metallics.

I've taken a few WIP pics of one of the new GW Ogryns I started before finishing Abaddon as a test piece for the new Scale75 paints:

Nothing special so far as he's still very WIP and only had an hour or so in total, but it does show off the nice matt finish of the Scale75 range quite nicely.

I've done an overview review of the Scale75 paints on my blog too for anyone interested.

Couple more WIPs of a project to convert the Lord Commissar model that started about 2 years ago but got paused when it came time to paint (colours are just rough sketching to decide a scheme):

Basically I cut the legs off of the Commissar model (smoothing out the cape) and then sculpted new ones in. The arms come from the Baneblade commander kit - much better scaled weapons I find.

The pose feels more commanding and better suited to the facial expression I feel. I was planning to paint him up as a regular Guard Commander, hence the white uniform - harking back to the old Rogue Trader artwork.

Hopefully work up the motivation to start painting on him again soon.

Cheers,
Dante

Very cool. As much as I shudder at the thought of someone hacking up that wonderful sculpt, you've done a great job and the result is something unique and excellent!

Thanks Paradigm.

Yeah, it is a lovely sculpt but thus legs always looked a little small and oddly proportioned to me and the overall action pose didn't seem to work with the facial expression.

Ultimately I wanted something a little different. Originally I was going to make him a Mordian officer until I remembered the old RT artwork and caught the pose of the officers.

Hoping to throw some more paint at him soon.

Dante

First off thanks for the review of the paints on your blog and secondly as much as I like the new pose of the captain/commissar , I still prefer him without his kecks ! ;-p

Its good to see your stuff on here again , you always raise the bar of what is possible in the hobby.

Thanks Neil - it's good to be back.

Oddly, your not the first person to have said that about the Guard Commander!

Are yourself and Peter still doing the chaos warbands? Got some plans for a bit of a chaos warrior conversion I'm planning at the moment and found it very inspiring!

Cheers,

Dante
