Did you stick with the studio theme for your army or did you branch out? Is branching away from the studio theme frowned upon (since they coloration will not necessarily match the card)

I have 4 WMH factions:
- Grey / red Cygnar;
- Dark grey / bone Legion of Everblight;
- White Cryx (just in the early stages of painting);
- Studio scheme Convergence of Cyriss (also in the early stages of painting);
So, no I didn't stick to the studio colour scheme and no one really cares if you branch away from it. Go wild!

Color doesn't matter for Warmachine/Hordes.
The only rules for what you put on the table is that the models must be clearly identifiable as the model the model they're representing and at least 50% the original model. Also they can't be immediately identifiable as a copy righted IP. For example you can paint your army black and purple no problem, but you can't put Ravens(American NFL team) Iconography on it. Note this is only at tournaments/official events, you can do whatever you want playing with your friends.

Curious about the copy righted IP. I purchased the miniatures, painted them, etc. applied decals (if necessary). What should the copy righted IP iconography matter if I am not selling just playing with (not that I plan to apply said material to my miniatures or paint schemes) I could understand if I applied it and then tried selling it... but I would not be.

During big tournaments PP will take pictures to publish in their magazines/website, stream games, and/or use the pictures/videos for promotional material. This is basically them covering their ass against sue happy companies like GW.
Because of fair use laws and the fact that it's an individual using the iconography it's highly unlikely that PP would get sued, but they don't want to take the risk as they're still a small enough company that something like that could seriously hurt them.
I should point out that there was a pretty big backlash against this policy when it first came out, but PP is sticking to their guns and is not backing down from the policy, so we have to live with it.

Well all of that makes sense and I completely respect them for it. I was just curious as I am very new to PP and was curious. I do not plan to do anything with copy righted iconography so all is well

My Cygnar are blue and my Menoth are green and gold because I am scared of painting white.
I want to do something in a really striking yellow, may save that for my gatormen but on to my eMorvanha list where I have no Idea what colour to go for, the wolves are all going to have grey fur, need a nice contrast

Cygnar (133) | 82% painted - Menoth (65) | 92% painted
Mercenaries (52) | 53% painted - Circle Orboros (42) | 92% painted - Minions (20) | 0% painted
Systems I play : Warmachine, Hordes, Star Wars X-Wing, Star Trek Attack Wing, Malifaux & Bolt Action.

Mine are close to the 'official' scheme so far.
My Khador (starter box only for now) are a much darker red than the official fire-engine red , but other than that are the same scheme.
My Menoth starter box is in progress, and will be close to the studio theme, as i like that color scheme a lot.
My rhul are going to be industrial. Steel and yellow, with danger stripes and warning decals.
My Circle are going to be in dark green mainly, and earthtone greys and browns. Not sure exactly what shades as yet, as i haven't painted any of them yet.
|
The Viletide: Daemons of Nurgle/Deathguard: 7400 pts
Disclples of the Dragon - Ad Mech - about 2000 pts
GSC - about 2000 Pts
Rhulic Mercs - um...many...
Circle Oroboros - 300 Pts or so
Menoth - 300+ pts

My Ret are close to the studio scheme, but darker, much closer to natural colours then the somewhat washed out colours Privateer Press uses.
My myrmidons are base white, but use darker accent colours, and breaks the white up with darker colours on extremities.
My groups armies are all basically the same. Many of Privateer Presses schemes are good, and only require small tweaks, which is personal preference in all reality,
My $0.02.

Not really - alternative schemes are standard fare and encouraged and allowed. Pp have published several alternative schemes for each faction for example (khador fifth border legion is a player favourite).
As for me, my khador stuff is similar to the studio scheme in that the armour has a lot of red. I use space wolf grey rather than greatcoat grey for the overcoats. Some other minor differences too.
My circle have blue armour with bronze trim, and green or brown cloaks. A bit different.

I stick to the studio scheme for Cygnar which some exceptions. The glow is green because I think the standard light blue is bad colour theory that doesn't have enough contrast to the other colours. Any ARM 19 or higher models have the blue replaced by khaki so they will not be a target of long range artillery.

I go out of my way to avoid using typical schemes at all.
Khador: Heavily weathered, themed around the STALKER games, so everything is bases on various faction colours. Freedom Winter Guard, Duty Iron Fangs, Bandit Kayazy etc.
Cyriss: Brass and gold with green energy bits.
Legion: Purple with black armour plates and neon green decorative bits and a bit of yellow to break it up. Female models have lilac skin, thinking of doing the male models blue.
Circle: Themed them around bioluminecance. Skins are all dark grey, material is dark green, armor and decorations are bright purple and blue.

I keep the relative "plan" for the color schemes, but I don't paint straight out of the book. My Khador jacks are all dark red, armor on non-melee infantry is glossed blood red, and armor on melee infantry is glossed dark red. They all have varying browns and greys on the cloaks.
Cygnar is blue and bronze for me, plus some silver as well. And my Black 13 WILL be rocking black clothes.

My Khador, Menoth, Searforge, Legion, and Retribution aren't the standard. My Circle, Cryx, Ashlynn Tier/Llaelese, Cephalyx, and Gators(in so far as they can be, really) are fairly close to the studio schemes. My Mercnar both are and aren't. They don't fit the standard Cygnar or Merc schemes, but they DO match the Magnus' Agenda scheme(and thus the Vinter era Cygnar colors) as pictured in Superiority from MkI.

My Khador are brown with red/gold as secondary colours on places such as shoulderpads. Exceptions are Iron Fang units, the Vlads and Drago but they all retain the same palette.
My Retribution are pretty much inspired by Green Lantern. So greens, blacks and whites.
My CoC are more or less studio scheme but with a bit more brass added.
My Legion are the studio scheme reversed (so blue bodies and off-white plates).
My Gators are just an explosion of bright colours with the bases tying them together.

And more importantly the community isn't full of people insisting that the official colours must be followed, nor does any model switch faction by being painted a different colour.
My Retribution have dark green 'jacks with blue highlights for Shyeel 'jacks and tan highlights for Vyer 'jacks. Infantry go in greens, browns and bronze with dust browns for leather being most dominant. I tried going for more sensible woodland guerilla colours. Naturally their hair are blues, pinks and reds. I just need to learn to paint proper flesh so I can put stubble on the males.

My Menoth is close to the studio theme, but I use a deeper red instead of that (imo) goofy pinkish red, and I use a bit more gold trim because... *bling*

back when i first started, and was just learning to paint, i stuck pretty close to studio colors.
my cygnar aren't terribly far off (blue and white, dirtied up so they're more blue/tannish)
my trollbloods are red, since every time i've tried to paint them blue i've gotten annoyed and stripped them

Because the requirement for painting is removed, the people who don't want to paint don't paint. Those that do are typically better at what they're doing than the people who hate painting.
