Hey everyone,
so a couple of my buddies are getting into Warmachine and Hordes, so I split the Warmachine starter box and have the Menoth from that.
I also really like the look of the Orboros from Hordes, especially the Wold monster robot guys.

So total newbie questions. I have yet to play, at all. I own the Warmachine rulebook and not the Hordes rulebook.

What unit or two would you suggest I get to expand the Menoth from the starter box?

What Orboros figs would you recommend for a starting Orboros player? The more Wold dudes in the army, the better, love the style.

Thanks for any help!

first up, welcome to the Iron Kingdoms. Dont forget your complimentary goggles and Redeemer plushie!

OK, now to answer your questions:

FIrst up, if you want to run a hordes army, i would genuinely recommend picking up the Hordes: Primal rulebook. Hordes and Warmachine share a lot of the same DNA in terms of game rules, but there are somebig differences that the warmachine rulebook will not cover with respect to how hordes armies operate (animi, warlocks, warbeasts, and their interactions etc)

Now, what units would i recommend for menoth and Circle?

it depends, is the honest answer. this is not 40k. there is no definite "how to" guide as to what you should get. a lot of things will depend specifically on your casters, and since casters can radically change how an army operates, and different casters want different things, as much as i find warpwolf stalkers and tharn bloodtrackers to be great warbeasts and units respectively, you cant simply say take "x" or "y" as a general rule. What works, for example, for Kromac, will be different to what works for Baldur. Also, it must be said very few things in this game are objectively "bad". everything can be built into a game winning strategy.
Similarly, with hordes armies, bear in mind, they tend to field far more beasts than warmachine factions field jacks due to the nature of Fury, and how warlocks and warbeasts interact. warmachine are about a backbone of infantry, supported by a battlegroup. hordes are about battlegroups supported by infantry.

Now, can you try and help us a bit? Nail down some specifics. What warlocks were you thinking of fielding with regard to the Circle army? this will have a big bearing on where you go.

Wow, that's a lot of info that's totally unfamiliar to me I don't mind the "not like 40k" thing as I dropped 40k years ago and am all about alternate rulesets (love Kings of War, War of the Ring, Deadzone, Hail Caesar/Black Powder, etc)

Well, in regards to

a) Menoth - I have the forces from the starter box. I'm at a loss as to what I should get next. A unit of ranged infantry? Etc. You mention a good infantry backbone for Warmachine so I think I should probably get a big unit of infantry for these guys right?

b) Orboros - I have no idea who I want to play other than I really like the Wold models because they remind me of Dragon Warrior NES RPG Golems, so I'd like to start there (with aesthetics directing what to get).

Thanks!

A) Look into the Choir if you want to properly support your warjacks (one of the best support units in the game). After that, a Vassal is always helpful. In terms of units, someone with more knowledge may have to step in, but errants and bastions I see across the table often.

B) Look into Baldur. He loves Wolds, in both prime and epic versions (I believe). The new warlock they have coming in the next book is also supposed to be a specifically Wold focused warlock.

Have a browse around battle college to get more familiar with the unit names/models/etc.

No wargames these days, more DM/Painting.

I paint things occasionally. Some things you may even like!

A) Choir, Covenant of Menoth, Vassal of Menoth,Errants plus their UA. Oh, and a Reckoner jack. Those are some of the msot commonly played options in the Menoth army.

I can field some questions concerning the Circle. FIrstly, if you really like Wolds, look into Baldur1 and Baldur2. Both of these 'Locks synergize well with Wolds.

Baldur the Stonecleaver(Baldur1 or pBaldur)
Probably a little simpler and has some great tricks. His feat isn't all that great, and you'll usually have to pop it early, say Turn 2 at the latest, because it loses it's use when models get into close combat.

However, Stoneskin is an absolutely awesome spell. It is best when used AFTER your Beasts get into combat(the -speed makes it so they can't charge), but having it on is better than not. Put it on your beast and, if you have the opportunity to charge, let it expire and charge. His second nice trick is Forestwalk. Can be really nice for a large movement, as a Woldwarden can make forest with it's Animus, then walk away, giving you the option to sprout your own forest then Forestwalk. Just remember, he needs to be completely in both locations to use Forestwalk! This mean, the Woldwarden has to move in order to Forestwalk there, otherwise there won't be enough room to fit in because of base size.

Besides those two primary tricks, his Solid Ground spell can really work well with friendly infantry when going against armies that are AoE heavy. This will negate blast damage on nearby models.

Good units to go with Baldur1:
Woldwarden/Megalith/Woldguardian
Druids
Shifting Stones(a must have!)
Tharns
Skinwalkers
Wolves of Orboros

If you plan on playing in tournaments, he's one of two Warlocks that you can play in staged tournies. Play him, a Woldwarden, and a Woldguardian for a battlebox.

Baldur the Stonesoul(Baldur2 or eBaldur)
Another good choice, his Rock Wall spell is awesome for giving cover to squishies, such as Lord of the Feast before he gets into combat or Druids. Contrary to Baldur1, Baldur2's feat is made for close combat; once your models get into combat, pop it and every model in his control radius gain Roots of the Earth. Very strong.

Good units with Baldur2:
Woldwarden/Megalith/Woldguardian
Shifting Stones(a must have!)
Wayfarers/Wilders
Skinwalkers
Wolves of Orboros
