PART ONE

Bennett stormed into the abandoned house, flinging the door open with such force that it bounced back off the wall and almost struck him in the face. Further angered by the door's unwillingness to play fair, he grabbed hold of it again and slammed it shut. ‘Easy there big guy!’ came an amused voice from behind a computer screen on the other side of the room.

‘When I want your opinion Strike, I'll give it to you.’ grumbled Bennett, removing his sodden poncho and throwing it onto a nearby table. He wandered over to the burning fire to warm up, disturbing another man from his reading.

‘Any news then?’ asked Andersen, placing his book down on the table.

‘Nah’, he replied, rubbing his hands together in front of the dancing flames, allowing the warmth to restore feeling to his fingers, ‘Ghost's still out there waiting for them to return.’

‘Not to worry, as soon as they've got the intel they'll be back. Then we can get on with the job.’

The big man sighed and sat down on a nearby chair. ‘I'm sick of the rain. Everywhere we go, it rains. And not just normal rainy rain, it's big fat rain, every single time. What's the deal with that?’

‘It's that big bald head of yours’, offered Strike, ‘Well known fact that rain is naturally attracted to dense, flat surfaces...’

Bennett stared over at the younger man, a slight look of confusion on his face. ‘But I was wearing a hat...’

Do you sell miniatures? What do they look like? What scale are the miniatures? These would be good questions to answer.

Good luck and welcome to Dakka.

Agreed. There's no point in talking about figures in vague terms.

There's some info on the 'About' page of the website, Militia Miniatures is a new range of 28mm modern mercenaries, which will be launched through Kickstarter next week. We're posting a series of teasers in advance of the Kickstarter campaign, just to build interest, so all the pictures will remain as silhouettes until we go live.

There should be a picture above my original post, it shows on my computer, so I'm not sure what's happened there?

All will be revealed when the KS goes live next week, so not long!

Silhouettes do nothing to hype your models before you launch a KS. Mostly because it feels like a pointless gimmick. same idea/lack of hype or interest happened with Wargames factories new American war of Independence plastics, which were A) teased over a series of weeks and B) had the first box set teased by a gods awful adobe flash puzzle. Show a render at least, please.

The last time I was successfully teased by a silhouette was at the Castro District Halloween Party in S.F., and that didn't turn out quite like I was hoping in the end...

Yeah, I'm not feeling any excitement for this project at all. Then again, I assume it will be just another set of metal or resin sci-fi homage pieces, and it's not like those are rare.

I feel like you're trying to sell us with two things, the silhouette teaser and a short piece of writing. As far as the teaser goes I think it's fine they're just silhouettes for now but I expect they'll be regular pics come the ks. It's apparent the minis are kinda static at this point.

And the writing doesn't further my anticipation. I think there should be an apostrophe in door's, and you may have worded Bennett's first line improperly, he implies he'll give Strike his opinion. Did you write this and was there any editing done? There's no context, just guys in a room talking about the weather. It doesn't make me want to buy miniatures.

The figures are all traditional sculpts, so no renders unfortunately. The sculpts are very nice and will be revealed when we launch next week. The plan is to just build a little anticipation among any Modern gamers, so they'll come and have a look at the KS when it goes live. Hopefully it works!

Nope, not Sci-Fi, as shown on the website and Facebook page, these are modern mercenary types, so something along the lines of Call of Duty with a bit of Hollywood thrown in.

There probably should be an apostrophe in door's, apologies for that. We had several people check the short stories before we went live, for content and grammar, but we must have missed that one. The Bennett line is correct though, it's supposed to be a joke, as in 'Your opinion matters so little, that when I want it, I'll be the one who gives it to you.' Each story is designed like a small cut scene from a movie.

The sculpts are a bit of a mix, some are static, some are more dynamic. They're designed as personality / character figures, so can be added into your current squads for skirmishing, used as characters for RPG's, etc.

BrookM wrote:Will the size and scale of these minis be more in line with GW's models or say, Hasslefree and Crooked Dice?

The figures have been sculpted to match in with the more popular modern ranges already on the market, so Empress or Eureka size.

You haven't really given us anything to anticipate, here. Neither the silhouettes nor the short story do anything to showcase the quality of the figures. I think you would be far better off showing at least one of the figures so people can judge whether or not to bother keeping an eye on the campaign.

Good luck with it, though.

Thanks for the reply, as a DakkaDakka exclusive then, here's a preview of one of the sculpts. We won't be revealing the rest of them until the KS launches next week, but hopefully this shows how nice the sculpting is...

Yeah, so far, if I need moderns I am safer with Hasslefree.

Definitely think there is a bit of room on the market for this kind of thing, it's not particularly over-subscribed (certainly compared to lots of other historical eras).

Good luck with the KS, look forward to seeing more!

Is your intention to release a selection of single character pieces, which have their own style, or to make a number of models with similar uniforms/gear? How large of a line are you anticipating will be covered by this kickstarter? A dozen minis? Two dozen? You say modern mercenaries, from which countries primarily? I'm assuming US, but will we be seeing any from other countries (or at least kit outside of the usual US and Russian guns)? Are you intending to release a ruleset with along with your models? Hmn, ah, and well I'll leave off with any more questions for now.

I'll say I've been interested in Kickstarters of this theme before. I wound up not backing the Spectre Miniatures one due to a couple of reasons, mostly well, I didn't really need a ton of mercs that all look the same to add to my existing minis. Ah, but that doesn't mean I'm not interesting in you Kickstarter, rather what I'm saying is that I'm looking variety over quantity. By the looks of what you've posted at the moment it seems like you're going for something smaller in scope than Spectre, or well at least your line may have more characterful models. In any case though you have my eye, so let's see where this goes. ^^

If we were ever compared with Hasslefree then that would be a great compliment, as they produce a huge range of figures, with excellent sculpting. There is a premium for that when it comes to the price though, so with our figures being less than £2 each through the KS, we're hoping that people see it as good value for money.

Thanks for that! There aren't a lot of character models on the market, so we're hoping people will like them!

The figures are all characters and there'll be 10 in the range if we hit our initial targets. As this is our first KS, we wanted to keep things simple, so we're concentrating on quality sculpts, realistic targets/pledge levels, and a quick turnaround. We've got access to all the moulding and casting equipment, so if everything goes to plan we'll be able to produce and ship these within 8-10 weeks of the KS finishing.

This first batch are generally in US gear, M4/M16/MP5, etc. There are a couple of less 'military' types in there which will be revealed when we launch. We wanted a decent level of variety, whilst having them still look like a team when put together. Each one is distinctively different though, as we wanted to give them personalities and make them unique, hence the story in the original post above. We know it's a very different way of promoting a range of figures, but we wanted people to get to know the actual characters behind the figures rather than them just being another range.

As for rules, we won't be including a set of our own, but we have been in discussion with a set already on the market about maybe working together in some way.

10 at £2 each? So you are looking at a £20 pledge per backer. I wish you luck.

There'll be lower pledges for folks who don't want the full set, so people can pledge for 1 figure / 3 figures / 5 figures. The price per figure won't be as highly discounted on the smaller pledges though.

I think you misunderstood. At £20 per backer, it will take an outstanding number of pledgers (I understand I have no idea what your goal is, of course).

The initial target is only £1500, so we'd need 75 people at the £20 pledge. There will be two higher pledge levels as well, one for folk who'd rather mix and match their 10 figures instead of get one of each. Then another one for clubs/groups who want to get a bigger quantity between them.

"Very Nice" is relative, and opinionated, at least as far as appearance goes. However, Very Nice as in sculpting quality and manufacturing can be the opposite. Which do you mean?

I also Concur, and ask for an image of a single figure so as to gauge quality

EDIT: Saw the exclusive picture. Decent sculpt quality, although i dislike the facial features, and general lankiness and thinness of the arms and legs.

Thanks for the post, I'm not quite sure I understand your first sentence though. The sculpting is very nice, the sculptor has done a great job of them. The preview pic above appears about 3x actual size on the screen, so that has to be taken into consideration. We've tried to keep the anatomy and proportions as accurate as possible, so they will match in nicely with ranges like Empress.

My first sentence is essentially "They look nice, in your opinion." Other people, specifically the potential customers of your kickstarter and business, may possibly see it differently.

What's up with the proportions? They look "human" to me (ie not 40k). I mean they may be off, but they look like they'd fit in with Empress' line well enough, and I've seen much worse anatomies out there (...uh 40k again, or well many, many other popular lines). Meh, for an initial picture I'm liking the style.
