Keep in mind I'm not a professional painter and I don't consider myself the best painter, so gentle honesty is appreciated. I'm wondering what folks think of my vostroyans I'm painting. So here goes:

Nice mooostashs

Whats the ribbon for?

Colors seem right though i feel the boots to pants color being the same looks strange perhaps breaking it up with a different color would be good.

I thought they were just boots. And the jacket covered the pants.

Was thinking of starting Vos but decided against it. They look good fun to paint and overall it seems alright, mainly like something I would paint. The flesh looks a bit awkward but that to me is the hardest part of the mini to paint. Maybe just a wash would do on that. The pants/boots look alright to me though.

Appreciate the feedback! I actually washed the face, them highlighted the forehead chin and cheekbones (anywere there would be prominent bone structure).

Overall do you think they're solid tabletop standard?

Also, out of curiosity, why didn't you get them? I'm on the fence about my vostroyans... Whether they look "military enough", in just didn't wanna be another guy with cadian guard ad I don't like DKoK fluff ( too emo for me).

I like 'em! Definitely tabletop quality! I like the flesh the way it is. Have you washed the boots? a nice eathshade wash would do some wonders if you haven't. I think the paint is clean and you should be proud of your work. Keep up the good painting!

Vostroyans are hands down my favorite IG models to date. I used to have a big army of them, but had to sell them a few years ago :( Always wanted to get a few squads going again. Awesome choice!

These are definitely tabletop standard, so no worries there! Not bad overall, but it's kind of hard to see any detail due to some of the images being washed out. I have some recommendations:

With models that have such small feet, I find it odd to see how they look as if they are sinking into what ever material the base is flocked with. This isn't so bad with heavy looking models, like Space Marines, but these are Guardsmen. So what to do? I use tiny bits of plasticard cut to fit the underside of the model and glued to the base as normal. This slightly lifts the model enough that when you do add flock it makes the mini look like he's standing on the soil rather than sinking in it. Little details go a long way.

Again, it may just be the washed out effect of the photo, but I'm not seeing a lot of layering on the models. If you're going for TT standard, they look fine. If you're looking to push your painting abilities, I think there is a lot of room for improvement. With the current line of GW paints, it's pretty easy to do some basic layer painting easily (i.e. without having to mix paints like you used to). You can really make the red coats pop by adding a wash to your base coat, reapplying your basecoat as a highlight, and adding one or two more layer paints to add some more depth. This can be carried on to all the surfaces.

It all really depends on how far you want to take it. Because the Vostroyans are seen so rarely now, I think these models are screaming for you to paint them above Table Top standard.

Keep up the good work! Always nice to see more Vostroyan armies out there. One day I shall return to them...

What is best in life? To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women. Grrr.

Thanks for that. I definitely want to go back and do some layering on these guys. They also will be based. My main concern is getting these guys all painted up so they don't look like shiny metal globs on the table.

I too fell in love with them immediately, and in the last month, I've managed to collect 90 vostroyan guardsman, a leman Russ punisher, executioner, 2 vanquishers and a baneblade.

One thing I've been struggling with. Do you think vistroyans give a military vibe like cadians?

They sure do! Vostroyans may not have the rank and file vibe that Cadians have, and may not look as though they can't be fielded in as great of numbers, but that is part of their charm. They are the glorious First Born of Vostroya! I would imagine that they a bit better at everything than your average Cadian Guardsmen. I don't know how you would show this now, but I know you used to be able to pick doctrines for tailoring your IG and I always made my Vossies Veterans to represent that fact. Just my interpretation, but still.

Quick question on your painting method, as it's hard to tell, but you are priming them before you begin to apply paint? I think they look best with a black undercoat, but, again, that's just me.

I think once you have them painted up along with your tanks you are going to have a stunning army that everyone will oow and aah over when they see them on the tabletop.

Thanks again for that.

Well my idea behind them aren't vets, it's to have two big platoon blobs with PCS, heavy weapon teams, CCS, supported by 4-5 leman Russ and a baneblade. Did I pick the wrong regiment then? :(

I do agree, I picked them because I think once sll painted I'll be known as the guy with the vostroyans, not the generic IG dude.

I was hoping fluff and looks wise it would make sense to have platoon style vostroyans with tanks.

Oh, to answer your question, I am spray priming black first.

No, you won't be breaking any fluff by using them as blob platoons. I only meant that, as far as IG regiments go, I always felt they were grittier than your average Cadian Guardsman. Every homeworld who gives it's sons to the Emperor have green troops or are forced to use large platoons to get the job done. I was only relaying how I used them. Nothing wrong in your ideas at all. You do Vostroya proud!

I appreciate it man. If you want, I'll keep posting updated pics if you're interested. My next two I'll be working on tonight, are a heavy weapons team and a platoon commander with power sword and plasma pistol (just for aesthetics cuz he looks cool)

As another poster said, it's a bit tough to make out the details. I would highly recommend taking new pictures with your models. A simple set-up that I've seen used is sitting the models on a white sheet of paper with another sheet behind them. I tried the idea with a sketch notebook, and it really helps the models pop.

I'm looking forward to see your heavy weapons team and commander

The main problem was the lack of weapon choices. I like plasma, I like it a lot. I don't really want to be spending that much money so I can get plasma weapons and my conversion skills are very limited. Writing an army list I realised that it would be a bit complicated for me to do ALL of what I wanted so I chose to give up. Might just buy a few for the joy of painting them.
