Subject: Dwarves Forging-up for WAR! My adventures in Sculpting Conversion parts for Dwarves and Squats!
I was asked to sculpt some parts, namely a new rifle and arms to hold it for Dawrvish Irondrakes. I don't follow Warhammer Fantasy, but they appear to be riflemen of sorts.
Original Irondrakes:
Anyway, I was given these images for inspiration:
So, after getting a set of the Irondrakes, I put one of them together and got started. The following are a series of images of the progression of the design of the rifle (and the paraphrased comments of Emperor Bacon, who commissioned the work):
(Barrel way too long)
(Barrel length good, bayonet too long and curvy, needs to be more axe-like)
(Bayonet better, but still too curvy, more squarish. barrely should be square too.) I had planned all along to make the barrel square, like the first inspiration picture, I just didn't have the proper square rod yet.
(Yes! Perfect!) He is actually pretty excited about it, from his comments, it actually sounds like he is salivating!
Also, in this picture you might be thinking the left arm is a bit too long, and looks off. That has been fixed.
See? I will be bulking up the arms next. He wants them cloth-like, like a coat or something, with armor attached to the left arm. We'll see how that works out in the coming days.
Also, he want to make a 40k Squats army! And to do so, he want some Power Armored legs to be used with MkIII Iron Armor. I have started on these as well.
These legs will be the starting point (bones) for Power Armored legs.
Here are some pictures to illustrate how they will look with a MkIII torso on them,
And standing next to a normal MkIII Space Marine:
They aren't lined up perfectly, but close.
The PA Squat also stands about a head taller then the Ironbreaker, which is about perfect, I think.
The rifle looks great arm bases seem well set.
Personally I find stock SM proportions rather dwarfish as is, but that's me =) The length looks right but I'd place them closer to each other even if that's just the base shape.
Keep up Jake, it's great to see you back in action after all the turmoil!
"No pain - no gain!"

Yeah, the legs do seem to be a bit wide....but I will most likely continue, for the practice, and re-do them entirely once I get a feel for it.
And yeah, it's good to be back in action. Finishing of the My Little Pony Commissar project gave me some much needed confidence.
And with my 2-weeks-gone-at-a-time schedule, it's difficult to get into sculpting when I get home, but this time, I took my sculpting stuff with me! Not sure why I didn't think of it before. Except that I had to check my sculpting tools because they would probably get taken away going through airport security.
Anyway, I'll get the most up-to-date pictures of the legs tonight!
Some good progress like how the rifle is shaping up and the square barrel works perfectly for dwarf design, will you be creating some kind runes down the side of the barrel ?
The squat power armour is a good idea using the marine MkIII armour might have to nick that one and combined it with the rifle idea
Great stuff and just after I have been sorting out my dwarfs

One problem with the Iron Drakes gun (it's actually called a Drake Gun) is that the weapon is less a rifle, and actually more of a focused flamethrower. Don't know if you'll be able to work that into the model at all, as it seems that the original commission was for a non-fire gun.
Also, the Drakes wear anti-fire armour- you could probably gain some inspiration from real-life anti-fire clothing for the cloth arms.

Runes or some sort of design. As for the rifle, he's happy with it so far, I can't claim to know what he has in mind for the function. As for the cloth, I am thinking of just making them look like trench coat sleeves, and have armor strapped to the left one.
I will also be trying to sculpt trench coats or cloaks onto the torsos. Instead of making something that would be cast, I may try to sculpt the coats/cloaks directly onto each dwarf. I still don't know exactly which direction I'll be taking for that part. I'm leaning towards coats.

thought i would also answere this comment and basicly the thing is i hate the GW rangers and thunderes (infact alsmot every dwarf model but the latest released ones) so i am using the parts jake is making pluss some other stuff to make a fully fledged dwarf "military" army kind of based of the looks of the empire great swords or the nule gunners where their left side has alot of armor but the right have less
and just relisehd i blabared so here is the short answere no they arn't iron drakes these are going to be converted thunderes instead that look like a military dwarf force then craftmen
i am just the wrong wargamer in the wrong place at the wrong time as allways so blame creed
15000 gak (its not point value its how many models i have lying around in bitz )

Not bad and matching in quite nicely with the armour just one small thing ( no pun intended ) are the legs a little long I am just using the comparison pic as reference mind.

The boots must be either armoured versions of elf-shoes (upturned point, almost like the prow of a Fire Nation battleship) or blocky boxy things with angles closer to right than any shoe ought to ever have.

that marine is about to go to the beach thats for sure really liking the legs how the progress is going also still trying to figure out a helmet idea that i need to make for them but seeing the shoe wise stuff blocky is always the right option for dwarfs (plus elf shoes i think there is a reason in that thing that dwarfs would never use that )

Thanks LDD, I like how the boots on the second one look, I think that's the direction I'll take.
I am going a lot slower than I had hoped, but that's just my MO I guess.
Got the front of the lower half of the legs shaped in. I will definately be re-doing these legs, I just didn't bring all the tools I needed with me, like my shapers for a smoother finish. So the armor is a bit on the rough side, but this is great practice.
I have finished the arms and the legs. And I have cast them! the toes of the legs gave me trouble, they like to hold bubbles, but with some mold tweaking, I think I have the issue sorted.
Here you can see the toe bubbles, but the rest came out pretty good.
Here are closer pics of the legs:
There's a few more pics in my gallery.
Here are some pics with a Mk III torso and arms with a converted Autocannon:
Love them mate I want some as well they turned out better than I thought they would have done
I really want to kick on with my dwarves this year and add to my chaos ranks, I was looking to this project for inspiration and I think you have done that
The rifle is a lovely piece and not over done (which you do find with some dwarf weaponry) yours has that PERFECT essence of dwarf workmanship and allows for a little alteration if you desire.
Great stuff Jake and look forward to more updates soon .......... Not in 6 months to a year LOL
Hey Vik what's the secret project then
