Hi all I don't know if this has been asked before but I'm in the need of a smallish display unit for my finished minis. Nothing crazy and nothing 5 star that hard core jewelers use with spot lights and fake smoke effects etc etc

I just wanted to know you all have picked up and are using with some info, price, maybe some pics and links where to buy

Look forward to seeing some of your opinions

IKEA Detolf ($80 cdn) is the main recommendation.

I have an IKEA Klingsbo ($150 cdn) that is double the price, but has a glass top letting in more light and it holds more than the Detof does. The display area is raised off the floor and is also lockable, which is nice.

Don't know if IKEA has much of a presence in Cyprus. Good luck.

I use an Ikea billy bookcase, from memory I think it was $59.99. Holds a lot of crap.

We have an IKEA here but not sure if they sell the same products as where you are but I will check it out thanks

Yep, I use the Billy bookcases as well. Inexpensive, you can buy extra shelves, and IIRC you can even get glass doors for them if you want. Might be larger than you want tho.

The Detolf are on for $60 right now.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

I've just found it in Cyprus for 60 euros so it's more expensive. It's nice looking though. Slim and airy

Don't forget to consider doing it yourself.

You can get the glass panel channel for dirt cheap, having a glass company cut and polish glass isn't extremely expensive for the shelves and the rods system that IKEA uses can be improved upon by using an adjustable system like this:

http://www.fairfielddisplays.com/display-rod

(not the best price...no endorsement of the company - they just happen to have pretty pictures).

Since one of the biggest compaints against the IKEA is that the shelves aren't very close and they are not adjustable...may be worth considering.

FABRIKÖR glass-door cabinet, there is non like this baby for presentation and style, not a mad ikea fan but they hit the spot with this one I think.

Problem with Fabrikor is that the stock case holds significantly less than Klingsbo for higher price. The adjustable shelves are nice, but there's no mechanism to buy additional shelves from IKEA.

Detolf is cheap, easy to assemble but sturdy, and easy to mod.

+1 Detolf

It's spelled "cavalry." NOT "calvary."

Detolf is the best budget option out there, without a doubt. It's main drawback for wargaming is that the shelf heights are huge, so there's a lot of wasted space (unless you're displaying titans or the like.

What I did was buy clear perspex risers (the kind used in shop displays), 30cm square and with a height roughly half the distance between shelves, which has effectively doubled the display capacity of the case. I've also seen people buy two Detolfs and put the shelves of the 2nd one into the first (you have to mod the frame somehow) to get the same effect.

“Good people are quick to help others in need, without hesitation or requiring proof the need is genuine. The wicked will believe they are fighting for good, but when others are in need they’ll be reluctant to help, withholding compassion until they see proof of that need. And yet Evil is quick to condemn, vilify and attack. For Evil, proof isn’t needed to bring harm, only hatred and a belief in the cause.”

I'm still hoping to be able to do a whole row of these in my basement, the Detolf is the perfect size for down there. Just sad that the custom glass shop that was just down the street from me is gone now. :(

Love my Klingsbos - I have a vertical and a horizontal. Worth the extra cost. Hold a ton more, have racks for extra storage underneath.

As large as possible.

I went to a discounted furniture warehouse called Unclaimed Freight. Picked out a nice Cherry Display Cabinet.
Traced one of the glass shelves when I got it home and went to the local paint and glass place. Had them cut out 6 more shelves because it only came with 3. Added some more shelf holders from the hardware store.

On my 3rd such cabinet now. Courtesy of Mrs. Snurl.

I also modded a Detolf and am quite happy with the results. I didn't add lighting or dust-proofing, though, like AesSedai. Had access to some free glass for my additional shelves, but it was thinner than the stock shelves. Worried about strength and stability if placing it directly on the rope clamps, I instead used them to support metal rods (just mild steel round stock, cut to length with a hacksaw) with soft plastic bumpers (slit sections of flexible vinyl tubing), much like the stock shelf supports. Would have welded or brazed it, instead, if able, but the current setup gets the job done.

I've got a wall of the Billy bookcases (2xdouble width and a single) with the half-glass doors and glass shelves for the minis. The half-glass means the top half is display for the minis and the bottom half is covered for the various storage boxes and things I wanted to hide. Glass shelves to save on space and make it brighter, with a couple of wooden shelves at the top to store books and scenery because I was worried about the weight. I need a bigger wall though to display everything :(

Seems ikea wins the preference contest for most gamers and hobbyists. I'm going to have to agree after chewing prices online for similar alternatives
