I started 40k a year ago and have been happily collecting my Tau. I've just got the last thing I need for my 750pt list and I'm starting to look at other armies to maybe have a go with (ie. MT or AM).

So my question is should I stick another £100 into my tau to get them up to 1000pts or should I settle at 750pts and invest in new armies?

What would you do in my position?

Is it important to at least be able to stick a decent 1000pts on the table?

You need at least 1500-2000 points to play a standard game, so keep going with your current army.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

^ what he said. A standard game is usually 1500 and tournaments are 1850. 750 is a good allied force but for a main army I would get at least 2000 points so you can have options at 1500 and 1850 before starting another army.

Thanks guys, I'll stick them out then.

However I may pick up some scions sometime just to satisfy my desire for a bit of variety, maybe make a kill team or something from them.

Think that'd make a good distraction? Or is it stupid buying a single box of a faction?

You could pick up an allied force. Do Orks still go well with Tau? Eldar probably still work fairly well, even if not broken. Though I'm hazy on 7th and allies changes as I don't play it, stopped during 6th.

Do you have people willing to play lower point games? A lot of people really enjoy it for a change if nothing else, and will do it for newer players. If you get 2x 750 point forces you could run either seperately at lower points or combine as allies for larger games. Or yeah, go for the mono force until you can fill it out to 2Kish.

Who says a standard game is 1500-2000 points? I find it funny Taffy is perfectly find with 750 points. Who's is to say that is what his gaming buddies play at.

If he is not playing and just collecting and wants to play then it's a different story. If he is playing at 750 point level then it's perfectly fine where he is, and doesn't need 1000, 1500 points to play then if the game level is 750 where he is at.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?

I usually play in my local GW and generally I think the people there are looking for 1000 point games. I usually get funny looks if I ask for 500 or 600 so I think I'll stick with it as far as 1000 and then decide where to go from there.

I do have the stormclaw box which I still need to paint so that can provide me with some variety in the mean time.

You certainly can play at 750 points. Most people would regard 1,000 up to 2,000 is a typical size for a standard game that you can complete in a couple of hours.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Well typically when I have someone ask me for a random game, it's 1500-2000 points. Unless someone has to leave for work in an hour or something, that's what we play. Also most leagues go up to 1500-2000. Almost all tournaments are 1850. It's not written in stone but it's been the general consensus among the player base for awhile now.

I salute your ability to contain yourself.

I also started playing September 1 year ago and I'm already sitting on 4.000+ points CSM (I don't even keep count anymore), 1850 pts Necrons, 1850 Points of Tyranids and an imperial knight.

Sometimes, I think I'm overdoing it. Then I look at my armies and I am very happy with every purchase I made.
I can change tactics/armies as much as I want so I'm never bored and apart from paint I probably won't buy anything till christmas so that's a bit justifiable? (lol nope)

You don't have to be happy when you lose, just don't make winning the condition of your happiness.

Honestly we are in a golden age of gaming right now where there are just so many good models and games out there that anyone who restricts themselves to any one game is doing themselves a disservice.

By all means continue your tau but pick up a starter for x wing or infinity as well. Find out what other gamers in your area play and see if you can meet up for a demo game.

The hobby is too big to only ever play one game.

It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

Can you tell me anything about x-wing or infinity? i googled them, X wing looks like its only empire v rebels which sounds kinda restricted. infinity looks interesting, like 40k but more bright and cheerful

Don't go ADD and start another army for the sake of starting one. I'd stick with one until about 2000 points unless you just come to despise your current one.

i would say the folks that you play with wil probably have the most bearing on what you should get next. If most of your matches are at the 1000 points level, you may want to aim for about 1500 in Tau, to give yourself some flexibility in composing your army lists.

In the end, if a model appeals to you no one can tell you it is a bad choice, if you enjoy working on the model and play with it. Does your local GW support Forge World or no? Are there any current leagues/campaigns that they are running? These are things that I would use to guide my next purchase.

Stick with Tau. Though you can always get some scions to use as gue'veza, or something.

What point level does your local scene/group play at? If the local games are usually 750-1k points, I'd build the Tau up to around 1500 points, with the last 500 points being some of the units/models that were "maybes" in your list building. This way, you can field some alternate units to shake things up a bit or try different strategies.

If your local scene sticks to "skirmish" level games at 500 points or so, shoot, get 750 points of Sisters to try something completely different.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

do whatever you feel. if you want to fill out the tau, go for it. If you want to start another army, then go for it. its for fun!

my opinion tho would be to get to 1,000 points and then start something new!

1500 minimum. 2K is the goal.

X wing is cheap, quick and fun. Its exploded in popularity since it launched and should be easy to get games anywhere.
It is rebels vs imperials but a Scum and Villany faction was recently announced as well as a capital ship version. Having said that between the expanded universe ships and the 8+ different pilots you can put in each ship it isn't very restrictive.

Infinity is less dark on the surface but there is a lot of moral ambiguity there. No one eats babies because their god said so, but humanities supercomputer AI that runs half their worlds and is their savior from the alien menace clearly has a lot of dirty secrets they go to a lot of trouble to keep hidden.
As well as that though the models are GORGEOUS and the rules take a bit of getting used to but once they click they are so intuitive.

Both games have subforums here on dakka, go have a peak. Neither are very expensive to get a single average sized force together on the side of 40k.

Ok, thanks. Infinity does sound interesting, i'll have to ask around my local GW if anyone knows about it or where it's played.

What about WHFB? I usually play in my GW store and WHFB is played just as much as 40k there.
