Hi all, figured I lurk on here enough I may as well drop a blog for my work in the hope of getting a bit of feedback, good or bad, about how I am doing!

Figure I'll use this first post as in introduction/index if it proves popular, so without further ado, a little bit about me...

Started in 1992 at the grand old age of 10, the same month as my local store opened. Since then I have been playing on and off collecting various different forces, always enjoying the modelling and painting aspect of it but never actually getting into it properly. Although several years back I got rid of most of my collection, I have always loved the fluff surrounding the 40k universe, and the Horus Heresy books kept me circling around the hobby.

circle round to summer 2013, I knew some of my friends played so got back into it again. spent a bit of time building up a Dark Angel force, primarily based around 2 of the DV box sets, but I've always wanted to do the Imperial Guard so decided that I will get up a gaming force of the DA's, and then move over using allies.

Then they released the Imperial Knights, which I have loved since playing epic and wanted the models before I had even read the rules, so I have 2 of them that are work in progress, and decided that I wanted to learn knew techniques such as airbrushing/weathering/etc to make the best of such great models. After a bit of time learning the airbrush (although I still consider myself a beginner with it) I decided on a new force I will do first to fight along side them before I tackle the Knights properly, so decided on the Militarum Tempestus (as they will slot into the Guard side of things as well), got the book and finally, this week, picked up the big box of them to kick start me off.

The DA's are all being stripped at the moment so I can airbrush them as well (as I was never really happy with how I did them before, and I was coming back into the hobby after a break so was just finding my feet) so they might pop up now and again as well, as well as some terrain that I am working on.

Well, that brings you up to date with me to the time of posting, hopefully it will speak for itself from here in. Don't expect updates to be constant as I split my time across a few hobbies, but I hope it is worth reading! Any feedback regarding techniques/etc is welcome!

And, of course, any good blog needs photos, so here is my first. This is a test model of my first Scion to see how it looks, and to make sure that the scheme works out.

Only done to the point of finishing airbrushing so far, and a couple of areas of other colours so I can see the effect, but I am quite happy with it.

Thanks! I really love the models, and figured that with all the trim they will go really nicely alongside a couple of Imperial Knights.

Anyway, a little more work to confirm the colour scheme. The biggest thing that I am not 100% on if the colour of the gun. I don't want to go another bright colour as it will detract from the armour, and grey is a good, functional colour, but I am thinking maybe a little darker?

anyway, it is pretty much at the point of adding glow to the plasma and finishing off the bedroll on the back and the leather straps, then time to give it an oil wash to pick out the details, another technique I am trying to learn!

hopefully once I have this worked out I can get the full squads underway!

Here is the progress:

Quick update with a bit more work done.

First of all, the previous guy glossed and waiting for it to dry so I can apply the oil wash

Next of all, the next batch is underway. I am doing them in small groups so there is always something different, so I can do one set and then be working on different points of the models, to stop me hitting the moment of doing the same thing on 35 similar models at the same time. There is a bit more gradient on these in the flesh, but the flash on the phone seems to have hidden it on the image.

Finally, the start of the half track conversion for the Taurox, as I can't stand the bonnet vents or the front tracks. Still has rivets to be added to the plasticard covering where the vents were.

I know these images so far are nothing special at the moment as they are just quick phone captures once I finish for an evening, but I have my proper lighting rig on order for when it comes to posting final images, as I am quite into my photography!

ok, its been a couple of weeks since I last posted, but I have now finished my first colour scheme tester!

Will probably end up redoing it as I had some issues relating to the oil wash and varnishes. First time I have ever used either properly, and I am new to airbrushing as well, so this whole model was a learning experience and it is to be expected. As a result there are some areas I am not happy with, such as where it went rather thick on the chest, something I'll be watching out for in the future.

Still, it gives a good indication of what I am aiming for!

I think it looks pretty cool as a colour scheme; interesting, but not too fancy for a soldier. Do you intend to keep that mouthpiece red? It's ofcourse your decision, but without a bit more definition, I think the detail is sinking in all the red.
I think edge highlighting some parts like the gold trim around his eyes and the emblem on his head would define his face much more, breaking up that red. That would convince me leaving the mouthpiece red, if that's what you want ^^

Thanks for the comment, the gold does go all around the eyes, although looking back at the original it does not stand out at all, so I'll have to go over it again. I've been doing a few more and it shows a bit better on the models that are still in progress. Also, other features on the mask will also be gold.

And, because i am sure it will be noticed in the background, I recently started picking up Bolt Action, so here is the Sd.KLfz 251/1 ausf C Hanomag from the starter box after the airbrushing of the camo.

just a quick update as I haven't really been able to spend much time painting recently. I've had a play with weathering techniques today...

overall I'm liking the effect and, although possibly a little heavier than I had intended, I don't think it looks out of place.
