Hey,

I am thinking of starting up playing warmachine. I have a ton of chaos and traitor guard 40k and recently did a small (1k or so points) of eldar where I focused on a strong theme with lots of conversion with picking units that I liked thematically rather than ones that were the best on the tabletop. I think if I am to get into warmachine I will need the same approach, a good theme I am really stoked to paint.

I want plenty of Jacks and I want them to be rusted to all hell. I did a warhound over the summer and used a lot of rust and grime effects (http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/624411-.html?m=2 ) and I'd like to turn this up to 11.

So my requirements are:

  • 1. Warjacks with large panels for painting/rusting
    2. An army composition that can have lots of big jacks and not loose every game
    3. I want to avoid painting units of soliders at all costs! unless they are totally awesome models
    4. Ideally the warcaster could be a jack himself?
    5. I really hate those little chicken jacks that cryx have (if im going with cryx, we don't want any of those)

  • I initially thought of cryx but theres a lot of meat and stuff in them so not sure, could do khador or a rustbucket version of the androidy faction maybe.

I am happy to buy units in blisters rather than a starter box so if theres a jack warcaster and a couple of big jacks and maybe a solo to support them that would be enough for games that would be ideal.

Sorry if this post is a bit vague.

Sounds like you want the convergence of cyriss.

The above is going to be impossible if you want to expand into any warcaster outside the battlebox of any faction.

Sounds like Convergence may be what you are aiming for otherwise.

No wargames these days, more DM/Painting.

I paint things occasionally. Some things you may even like!

Convergence of Cyriss runs the most warjacks the best.

Cryx has two casters that run Jacks well. Mortenebra and the Witch Coven. Mortenebra is better as she has an amazing theme force that gives you a point reduction of heavies. This can be an extremely powerful list. Check out a player names Tom Guan who regularly uses Mortenebra to win tournaments. Also pSkarre is currently fairly popular at running the Kraken with a couple of heavies. Also pDenny(battlebox caster and easily one of the top 5 casters in the game) can run a very good shooty jack list. If you want to play at a tournament you shouldn't have any problems running a shooty pDenny jack list and a melee focused Mortenebra jack theme force and do very well. Though if you play the pDenny list you'll need at least one of the little chicken jacks.

Cygnar can run a lot of jacks but it's not their forte. An extremely fun list, is Jeremiah Kraye with a bunch of light jacks as he gives them an extra 5" of movement a turn. Also Cygar has epic Haley(best caster in the game) who can run 2x Stormwalls amazingly. The "eHaley double Stormwall" is extremely powerful, and was very popular last year and the year before. However it's fallen out of vogue recently because people wised up against it on the Tournament scene and honestly local players probably wouldn't want to play against that list if they had a choice.

Khador, it can run jacks, however 95% of the time they don't. it is possible to create a tournament winning jack list with them. However 9 times out of 10, you're better off only running one or two jacks. Please note KHADOR IS NOT A JACK FACTION NO MATTER WHAT ANYONE TELLS YOU.

    2. An army composition that can have lots of big jacks and not loose every game

Here's the reason so many people are switching from 40k to Warmachine. It doesn't matter what army you play you've always got a chance at winning. In 40k the game is 90%+ the models you bring and 10% player skill. In Warmachine it's more along the lines of 85% player skill and 15% the models you bring.

A smart Warmachine player can with tournaments with models that are widely considered the worst models in the game. For example last year a player took Khador to one of the largest tournament/conventions in the U.S. amd one of his lists featured Assault Kommandos which are widely considered one of the worst units in the game. This player knew what his opponents would be playing and was able to counter one of the strongest combinations in the game with one of the worst units in order to win the Tournament.

AKs aren't bad. They're just not as good as IFP and Winter Guard.

They're also far from being one of the worst units in the game. There are plenty of things that go before AKs in the list of the worst.

Anyway, you definitely want Convergence of Cyriss. Bad news is that PP has a lot of models only available in metal, good news is that cyriss has the most plastic with only a few of the solos being metal(but they're easy to assemble)

There are NO casters who are Warjacks, ruleswise anyway. Khador's Karchev has a damage grid and can do some Warjack Power Attacks, but he is explicitly NOT a Warjack(rules are very specific) and Khador is not a warjack faction at all(infantry faction 100%)

But Cyriss has tons of mechanical stuff to compensate and Syntherion can run nearly all Warjacks with only a few support solos besides them.

You'll want to get the Battle Box(which has Syntherion, Cypher, a Mitigator, and a Galvanizer), one of each heavy Vector kit(magnetize), a 2nd Galvanizer, a Corollary(awesome), and an Optifex Directive. That will get you started.

Thanks for the advice, looks like convergence it is. I really dont like that dude caster though so probably pick up that lady with the 2 mines instead. Might swap her head out for either a human face or a necrony skull.

I like the idea of a less wholesome machine trancendence where people are wired into the rusted machines whole either with or without their consent.

I might recommend a colossal. Warmachine normally didn't run all jacks well. But a colossal eats a lot of points and is efficient.

IMO the Cygnar, khador and mercy colossals would work best for rust effects.

COC seem to care for their machines more than human life so I don't see them getting too dirty and rusty.

Edit: colossals are almost all resin. And also check out Cephylyx. They are a new faction, but if you like the idea of slaves being wired into things they may be your shtick. Also would look great painted in a rusty, dirty style.

Most factions have at least one caster that can run almost all jacks and be competitive. Convergence does it best, but if you want jacks with a lot of broad surfaces to do rust, I would suggest Khador. I know you mentioned that you didn't want to paint troops, but Khador has the Man O'wars which look like small jacks (and are about the same size as small jacks). Mortenbra from Cryx and a bunch of jacks works too (rust is also very appropriate in a cryx army). Also Darius from Cygnar (or eHaley) run a list of jacks pretty well. There are also a couple of Menoth casters that can run a lot of jacks well.

I'm not prejudiced, I hate everyone equally

This is the WIP for my first heavy jack. Definetly love the amount of mechanical bits, really makes it a breeze to paint and can turn the grime up to 11. Also played a 35 point game with another persons army tonight and had great fun. Love the 8 focus on on the iron mother and her mindcontrol power.

That is very well done. Quite like the conversion.
