So after playing the game of 40k with my orks I feel that orks were a great starting army. Recently though many other armies have caught my eye as I only play 40k orks. In my gaming group its been fun winning and even losing with my orks until I got used to them and the game. However Ive decided to do necrons, long story short, but one of my friends plays them. I know people will play the same army but theres this one guy there that pisses everyone else off by half starting all the armies saying hes going to do them but doesnt. Ive waited a while to choose necrons and I dont want to look like that guy because no one plays the same army which is awesome for diversity. How do you guys think I should approach this? Any help would be awesome!

Buy what you want. They're your toys so you should at least like them. If you don't finish the collection that is your choice. Why would people get mad over it, anyway?

Thought for the day: Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.
30k Ultramarines: 2000 pts
Bolt Action Germans: ~1200 pts
AOS Stormcast: Just starting.
The Empire : ~60-70 models.

Sounds like that guy can't decide on what army to select and stick with.

Everyone has different ways of enjoying the hobby. I wouldn't worry too much about what other people think of your collection.

Actions define a person.

You can not control other folks gaming whims. So I would forget about the "other guy". You do what you want to do.

If that means that you are ready to play a new army, then by all means start a new army. No one can tell you, you only ever need to play one army ever. Do not feel that you should play any one army over another just to maintain codex diversity. Building and painting an army is a time intensive investment.

A person should always play the army that calls to them the most. So if it is Orcs, then who cares if there is another player in your local gaming group that also plays Orcs. As army builds go, army lists can very greatly from owner to owner. Just as players can like the same armies, they can differ greatly as to the units they prefer over other units.

I have one question to pose to you. Are you a proppa' orces, or dem otha orces the real deal?

Cowards will be shot! Survivors will be shot again!

Don't worry, our local META everyone plays a Marine army [or 5] and another army or two.
For me I am super exited about my Space Wolves getting their new Codex. The only reason I am going to shelves them here and there is we have a new Space Wolf Player and I plan on using either my Guard or Grey Knights against him until he gets his second army together.

In defense of the other guy I myself have been pretty indesivsice when it comes to choosing and staying with armies, outside of my Elysian Drop Troops as the hobby does offer a large range of figs and cool models so you cant really blame him. Three factors that helped me settle on the armies of my choice that I took into account:

-Fluff
-Cost
-Play Style

For my Elysians I love the fluff and the Imperial Guard are my favorites in the entire game and I wanted them to look awesome. Cost, it was expensive but the fluff and how the army played more then made up for it. How it played, love the aggressive balls to the wall risky style that this army gives me and which was why it was a given to play with. For my Farsight Enclaves it really was a toss up as I was taking into account several other armies to play with for my selected xenos factions, in the same regard to the three factors: Fluff: Loved Farsights fluff and his basic "screw you Tau Empire and your Ethereal slaves" so I could play Tau and still technically tell them to go to hell! Cost: Pure suit theme list so relatively cheap in regards to collecting an army and how the army plays is completely different then how my Elysians play. Try using those three factors to decide and it really helps, also for Play Style I would recommend collecting one that plays differently then your Orks to really mix it up.

19th Krieg Siege Army 7500pts.
40k/HH Night Lords 5000pts.
Orks Waaaghmacht Spearhead 2500pts.

I've got my Tau army but every week I'm tempted to invest in something new.

The last week alone i've gone from planning my Bran Redmaw Great Company to making a Death Company list to getting tempted to make the Lions of Macragge (2nd company command squad) to Crimson Fists 1st Company.

I'm far to fickle, but I've told myself I'm gonna stick with my Tau and add another few hundred points to them before I move on.

If unlike me you have a pretty large army I'd say there's nothing wrong with trying out something different.

By all means do another army, even if another player you know has the sane. Given the diversity in 40k armies, the chances of your army and his sharing more than a name is low, and even if there are some units you both end up using, that doesn't necessarily make it less fun for either of you. For example, one of my most regular opponents played Guard and so do I, and the lists used were completely different? Moreover, the games between our Guard armies were among the most fun I've played.

Remember that although you may be using an army that has the same codex as another in the group does not mean you will be playing the SAME army. The actualy units/models taken will be different as well as the play style and decisions during the game. Also dont forget that although most armies of necrons you see look a lot alike, you dont have to do the same. I've seen amazing necron armies made up to actually look like tomb kings with the guys painted up in skeletal bone colors and so forth. Depending on you you two do them up, the appearances of the armies can also be wildly different.
Besides if they are your buddies, the game time and time spent enjoying yourselves is more important than what kind of "army men" your playing with.

Necrons can be played in several ways, so it might not even come up really. But I understand this conundrum. I actually chose to play Sisters of Battle because I thought it would intrigue people enough to want to play me. I figured it was a good way to get games in. I hadnt even really seen them played or read the codex when I committed. Turned out to be a great decision for me, competitively.

So I do get the want to have variety for sure. But the heart wants what it wants.

Necrons are great. As said, they can be played in different ways.
Fast based on flyers, phalanx based on Ghost Arks and Warriors, cc oriented using Wraiths, Scarab farm with Spyders, and shooty with Crypteks.
