Ever since first seeing the "flying brick" I've wanted one for my army... in 40k scale. With Armorcast making Titans in full scale I thought it was only a matter of time before I would have my wish granted and I'd get my Gunship. As we know it didn't quite work out that way!
Not one to give up on a dream, I did absolutely nothing! ...except quietly dream about having a full size flying brick. Eventually Games Workshop changed the design of the Thunderhawk, and the brick was relegated to the myths and legends of the Horus Heresy... or at least the game Adeptus Titanicus!
In a random chance encounter in a model shop I spoke to a gentleman who told me how he turned a WWII landing craft model into a dropship... The lightbulb came on and that was it!! I started a build that has the potential to make a 40k dream come true! Unfortunately I didn't take pictures of the build as often as I should have- but I can talk you through it, and if Google Images is my friend I can perhaps create a blog that you may enjoy reading...

Starting with the largest landing craft model I could find on the market I immediately set about my build. trumpeter models provided the foundations with their 1/35th scale LCM

Conveniently my local Games Workshop has a master builder as manager and he pointed me in the direction of an alternative to plasticard- I of course refer to movement trays

and two packs later I had the foundations sorted!

I'm interested in seeing how this turns out!

I’m sure glad GW is going to all plastic, so the ever-rising cost of white metal won’t impact the cost of their miniatures.

Seriously? You're going for that MK1 Thunderhawk from EPIC?
Oh boy! Can't wait to see it! My expectations are set high now.

I cut the keel off the landing craft and then cut the upper parts of the sides off as well leaving me just a strip and the front landing door left. My intention is that it would be able to carry at least 2 Rhino class tanks so I wanted the front door to work while at the same time having the added support that the LCM gave.

I attached the movement trays to what was left of the "walls" of the landing craft. One of the things that I noticed when using the movement trays over regular plasticard is they already have measurements on them- plus, with one side being the larger 1" squares it was easier in working out sizes!

Awesome! Curious to see how yours will turn out! I made one a couple of years ago and it was a hoot! Check out my gallery if you're curious!

Actually, Heliodore- Yours is partly the reason I'm doing this. I thought I couldn't do it- and I had asked others to do it for me- but between their efforts and your build I realised I can do it! Especially as I have an old school force that I dare say is bigger than yours!! The tank from WD 104 you recently finished, I built 6 years ago! but I don't have the deodorant flyer- Kudos and a victory point to you!

You'll find I'll be mentioning your name a few times in this thread as your build is something people can compare my build to.

back to the build...

Obviously when building something your mind races at warp speed and you think of a million things at once! As I was waiting for glue to dry I turned my attention to other parts of the ship. I always understood the Thunderhawk to have turret mounted twin linked auto-cannons on the nose, battle cannons on the wing mounted turrets and a volcano cannon on the top. To this end I raided my bits box and found all necessary cannons from Imperial Guard tanks!

For the nose mounted side turrets I used milk bottle tops and the side turrets were paint sample pots! The top most main turret I used a poster tube… With plastic enhancements! I'll post pictures shortly.

I can't say I understand why, but as a fan of RT, I'm at least entertained to see what you come up with.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

Great, I'm glad it could help in giving you some confidence! Totally, with my first scratch-build projects I didn't think I could do it either at first, so I just dived into it, if only to see what I would end up with in the end! Hehe, didn't think we'd be comparing sizes Certainly no match for someone who lived RT! Yeah, just discovered those old templates, and that grav-attack vehicle is kind of (in)famous!

No prob, I look forward to seeing all your future builds!

A feature of the original Thunderhawk is the Gothic window line that runs along the top of the ship. I felt the windows had to be prominent enough a feature to really stand out. I bought some 0.5mm Styrofoam board and drew upon it the arched windows free handed. Using my x-acto knife I carefully cut them out. After that I glued a thin piece of plastic just over an inch wide along the top of the hull… and on that I fixed the Styrofoam board… with windows removed! I’m quite proud of how it turned out!

Here’s a couple of shots of it next to one of my converted twin autocannon barrelled Predators, with forward weapons mounted and wing turrets in an approximate position to wear they’ll be.

Wow! That is coming along rather nice! Any plans for the wings? Also, are you going to mount it on a flyer base?

@Brother SRM Thank you- I hope I've rewarded your interest... and there's more to come!

@jreilly89 Thanks- I wish I had taken more photos as I was building the early stages- it would have been much more interesting for you to read about, I'm sure. I do have plans for the wings, all will be revealed in good time As for mounting it in flight- I'll be honest, I had considered it but I'll have to give it more thought after it's built...

Some interior pictures for you. You can see the low walls of the landing craft and the floor and front door of the LCM have been integrated. I had to cut off the top of the landing door but I thought it made a nice railing so I put it in the vehicle to keep it! You can also see the structural supports that have been added to help strengthen it.

At the moment you can see that while it does hold 2 tanks it JUST holds a Predator due to the width of the tank... I have every intention to add a little bit of interior to it so it won't hold a Predator anymore- just Rhinos without side sponsons- as is represented by the Rhino manticore in the last picture

@Veteran Sergeant, you say you don’t understand why… I suppose that’s an oversight on my part. Allow me to explain… As I said in my first post I started in 1987 with the advent of Rogue Trader, but what I didn’t say is I still have my original Army. My 40k force doesn’t include anything (with the exception of the odd figure and a few vehicles) past 1993! It is a true RT army… and at 3 companies of troops, support units, Tanks and Titans already in the army a Thunderhawk was the next logical step… and the only direction I could go in!

@jreilly89 I have considered a colour scheme- Green! Not quite Dark Angel green but damn close! I’ve also been thinking about your question/ suggestion about putting it on a flying base and I think I’ve worked out a way of doing it… well actually making it so that it can be either in flight or on the ground… using magnets on the landing gear and a bloody strong flying base… I’ll have to look at GWs large flyer base very carefully!

Back to the build…
The Thunderhawk has a vent on the roof- after a lot of thinking/ planning and searching I stumbled on this from Lego! (Lego is my friend!)
[Thumb - $(KGrHqVHJEQFGSDlcLmpBRto1),pnQ~~60_57.jpg]
It’s a grated floor and with some careful cutting and doctoring became the roof vent. The addition of some 1cm counting cubes for the battlements and the Thunderhawk’s ceiling was complete…

[Thumb - TH roof.JPG]
The attachment of the turret is all that’s left to do for the top!

Love it! As far as the base, haven't messed around with the flyers, they seem stable enough, but if they're anything like the Land Speeder bases, a tumble from desk height to soft carpet will snap them in half

@ Nowlan normally I would agree with you, but on this occasion the movement trays were just what I needed! they enabled me to make perfect measurements and the lines on them work as panel lines on the ship. Obviously you have to decide whether to buy them depending on what it is you're building, but in the case of this build- I'm pleased with them...

A concern I had from the moment I started this build was the boosters on the back. 4 large engines propel this behemoth through the skies and considering the size of my ship, I had to pick something suitable.
Heliodore used furniture feet- pretty ingenious- but I thought, in my opinion, they were a mite too small… looking for something substantial- Lego once again came to the rescue with wheel cones from Lego Technic! These had enough moulded on detail that I didn’t need to add any, plus they were of a size I thought fit the hull.

I cut the “teeth” off so they would fit flush with the hull- and now they just need attaching and painting!
