It is very difficult to pick a starting faction for this game. They all have their subtleties of character, and very different models. I was wondering when you folks on Dakka picked your armies whether models or fluff had a bigger part? My case: I got the starter box with my brother, and I really like the look of the Menoth models (Kreoss especially), but kinda like the fluff of the winter Khador people (mostly pikemen and the slab war jacks not included in the starter). I don't really know which one to pick... It is also cool to look at Cygnar in their battle box, but I'm getting ahead of myself... How do you guys pick which armies to use?

For the guy who leaves it all on the field (because he doesn't pick up after the game).

I picked my first army- Khador- because they were red.

I'd say pick what you're excited to paint. You can learn how to use them, whatever they are, in time.

I split the starter box with a friend and picked menoth. He wanted Khador and none of the factions really grabbed me aesthetically so I let him have the khador. I thought the PP stuff might grow on me but it hasn't. At least the rules are good.

My first army in MKII was Khador. I still love the models and regret selling them to this day.

For me it was the fluff and the models though.

The nice thing is that all of the factions (minus Minions) are really fleshed out so just about any play style can be found in just about any faction (and yes some do it better then others).

I started with a few buddies and tried to pick one no one else was going for. But switched early on when I won a cryx starter as a door prize.

cool thing about this game is it is pretty cheap to pick up a new faction. Everyone I know who plays with any sort of regularity has at least two factions. I have 5.

For me it was looks/models. I was planning on getting into the game with a friend and my main plan was to pick a diff faction than him, but I also wanted one that I liked the majority of the range. After looking around I choose Retribution since from what I read they aren't played as much and that appealed to me as well. Going to warhammer tourneys gets old when 10 out of 20 people are all the same army.

But I have always liked the look/fluff of Cygnar so I have started them up as well.

I remember when talk started getting serious in the local group about being fed up with GW rules and someone mentioned how warmahordes is known for its clear rules and balance.
Once we had agreed to look into i pretty much went straight to the PP site and stared looking at models to see if anything grabs me, that process abruptly ended when i saw Karchev and Khadoran jacks in general.
So i guess i chose my faction for its moels, i seem to have gotten lucky however because it turned out their fliff is awesome too (or at least i think so).

I've picked Skorne because I love their beasts. I used to hate pretty much all the PP models but they've really grown on me.

Having said that I'm also probably going to play Circle, Gators, Retribution and Cryx, mostly for the looks, and the play styles.

I went with Trollbloods because of the models. I really didn't even know the fluff other than a Scottish clan like feel. I keep thinking of starting another army, but then I just end up getting more Trolls.

You could attach your army to part of the fluff.
Kreoss is a khadoran of the old faith who migrated to the protectorate in his youth so you could build an army around the idea that he is leading a group of khadoran menites in the northern crusade to secure control of khadoran territory.
Likewise, Vlad is a menite in the khadoran army so you could play out the reverse army as well. Khadoran menite nationalists united under the old monarchy to reclaim their ancestral land.

I picked Menoth when my players group decided to start warmachine earlier this year. I really like the Menoth fluff and really like the looks of their models. Don't feel like you have to rush to pick the army you want to play. Take your time play a few games with the starter set and just learn the game.

I originally picked up Cygnar because it was the only faction that no one in my group of players had picked yet when we started playing back in 2003. I don't usually go for "good guy" factions but everyone had already picked Cryx and Khador so that was my only choice since I could never get behind a faction like Protectorate.

But as the story for the faction developed and seeing what Stryker did to the Menites and what Letho did to the Trolls, made me realise that Cygnar isn't such a pristine faction after all!

I went Cryx because I had (still have but don't play it anymore) a maahoosive Blood Angel army and I wanted to go with the "bad guys" for once.

I didn't read any of the fluff before hand but now I have them I really enjoy the story behind them. I've also tried to venture into different factions but find the lure of Cryx hard to resist and keep going back to add more!

I went Cygnar because of the giant steam-powered robots, that shoot lightning.

I started Trollbloods because I wanted to solve my problems with an axe to the face, and also the thought of my caster shouting "FREEEEEEEEEEDOOOOOM!" William Wallace style during my feat turn.

Orks - "Da Rust Gitz" : 3000 pts
Empire - "Nordland Expeditionary Corps" : 3000 pts
Dwarfs - "Sons of Magni" 2000 points
Cygnar - "Black Swan" 100 pts
Trollbloods - "The Brotherhood"
Haqqislam- "Al-Istathaan": 300 points
Commonwealth - Desert Rats /2nd New Zealand 1000 points

Khador was my first army, and I still love the aesthetics and fluff (ZEVANNNAAAAAA), but I didn't really like the playstyle. I thought they would be suited for heavy plodding mass of metal that slowly gets to you, freezes you and axes up your pretty face and laughs at being outflanked. Then I realized how nimble Khador is.

For Hordes, my first army was Circle, cuz insane droods is bossome. I loved the fluff of Legion and Trolls, but the playstyle didn't really click with either for me.

I do feel that if fluff is really important for you, use that to pick your faction. If you don't have a way of immersing yourself in the game, it might just seem stale or generic. I know now that I totally could have built that wall of freezing steel with Irusk, Karchev, most of the Butchers, epic Sorscha.....

My go-to piece of advice is to pick up the models you like, but try to balance the look vs the abilities. Pikemen are amazing on the table and look very awesome. Kayazy look full-durp but are stellar if you like stabbing. I bought Assault Kommandos because they're my fav-looking Khador unit, but I didn't put the time in to figure them out.

Have no fear! No matter what people say, anything can work if you figure out how to use it. Now GO! Be the fluffiest bunny you can be!

(also, Cygnar and Cryx aren't typically the best BB buys IMO.)

For me it was 50/50 of looks and fluff. When I saw something that looked cool, I'd check the fluff.
I stopped looking when I saw the Iron Mother figure for convergence. Then I read that they were Lovecraftian machine worshiping cultists and I knew I had found my faction.

The three friends I started with managed to grab Khador and Cryx (which were the two factions I was most interested in, based on appearance alone), and Menoth. So I figured "eh, what the heck"and took Cygnar. Hadn't really looked at much beyond glancing at the core rules and the models in the starter sets, so I didn't know anything about the fluff.

Cygnar became my favorite faction, and more or less still is, though I really like the Convergence of Cyriss and the Legion of Everblight, too.

For me?

Khador: THe original art and fluff behind (a) doom reavers, (b) assault kommandos and (c) the Butcher of Khardov sold me on the faction. especially in the case of the Butcher, i see him as a tragic monster with huge depth to his story.

Circle: Saw tharn and wolves, and that was me. i dont go in much for the druid, or rock stuff, but im game for anything furry or tharn related!

For me the models are more important than the fluff since you're going to spend so long painting them that you'd better like them, but to be honest there's no faction in Warmachine who's fluff really appeals to me, although there are individuals characters and groups who I enjoy reading about.

Having said that there is no single faction who's models appeal to me across the board. I chose Khador to start with because I find their Jacks more visually appealing than any others, especially the Spriggan. Cygnar is slated to be my second army because I like most of their infantry models.
