Hi guys. I'm looking at starting Circle at some point in the future, when I have a few games under my belt with my Skorne. I've always liked most of the Circle models but a few of the older Beasts and Casters put me off, but we have better looking casters now and updated versions of those beasts, and the playstyle of Circle really appeals to me, especially as a counterpoint to my Skorne. I have been reading a lot of the starting out information out there, but still am a bit unsure of where to start. I know that the Circle battlebox isn't considered that great, in terms of future playability. So what should I be looking at for a decent 25 point starter list that's easy to expand upon?

In terms of casters, there's a couple I really like the look of (models wise, at least). I love the Moshar model. I also really like Morvahna 2, on her little goat, and I know she's meant to be very good. I like Bradigus Thule but I know he's a little inflexible with only being able to take Wolds. I like Kromac, and Kaya, but I think my favourites are definitely eMorvanha and Moshar. Are they okay to start with?

And in terms of moving forward, I do prefer a more beast heavy list, but I'm aware Circle don't do that as well as say Legion or Skorne, so I'm happy to have some infantry in there too. I don't know much about infantry though. But beast wise, I'm guessing I should pick up a Gorax and a Warpwolf Stalker. I also love the Satyrs, and the Wolds, and at some point I'd like to play the Woldwrath. I know he's not meant to be great but his model is too good to resist.

So yeah, based on that, where d'you guys think would be a good starting point? Thanks for taking the time to read this.

I've only just started dabbling in Circle, but eMorv doesn't seem to me to be beast heavy. She wants troops.

Kromac could probably go beast heavy And I think both Kaya's are beast casters as well.

IMO, choose what models are important to you then build off that. I usually start with my warlock/caster and then get the things that work with them.

Well I have Skorne for my beast heavy so I don't mind doing more infantry with Circle. I do quite like Kromac but I know the Kayas work better in smaller games so id like to start with something that I can expand and ay at bigger games.

THing is, Hordes factions automatically play more beast heavy than warmachine factions. Circle casters generally have few to no problems running a gorax and 2 to 3 heavies. back that up with a squad of infantry and some gallows groves and you're at 35pts already.

Looking at what you like - Mohsar is a very solid anti-hordes drop, Morv2 is one of the best casters in the game, and Kaya and Kromac are both fantastic alphastrikers. I personally fell in love with Circle through Kromac - he's probably my favourite circle warlock. He is deceptively simple, and easy to learn, but he has a lot of hidden depth to how he plays. He presents a solid assassination threat, along with good control/anti magic (bestial) and one of the best mobility spells in the game in the form of Warpath. that thing is bonkers when combined with sprint, warpwolf stalkers and woldstalkers or bloodtrackers as triggers for it.

For Kromac, my first 25pt list took me to second place in one of my first tourneys. it was something like the battlebox contents, a gorax, the lord of the feast, war wolf and the totem hunter. If i was to start off again with him, I'd take a gorax, stalker, feral, and min bloodtrackers, or 2 stalkers and woldstalkers in tow.

No that's cool, that's why I prefer Hordes I think. I will do Warmachine eventually I think (probably Retribution and Cryx) but I prefer the Beast heavy theme of Hordes.

Does Moshar not do well against Warmachine at all then? I really like his model and story haha. I love Morv2, and she's really good, and she plays the Woldwrath well which I'd like to pick up at some point. But people have said she's not a good starting caster, how come? I don't mind Kromac, I just prefer other models and his feat seems...dull. I dunno. And Kaya, I know she does better at smaller lists and I'd like a list I can expand easily to bigger lists (35/50)

Sorry, I'm probably being really awkward.

epic Kaya is amazing for living beasts. The Satyrs and Wolves do the best with her. Mohsar is an odd-duck, and the Goat Queen loves infantry (though not as much as pMorvahna). I never got the hang of pKaya outside of her "yo-yo" move, which is sort of built-in with her epic version, but only for a turn.

No need to apologise, ask away

Mohsar does fine against warmachine. dont worry. His spells and abilities are solid across the board, but when i say he is a hordes drop, i say it as his feat is utterly brutal against hordes armies.

Morv2 is a brilliant caster, but i would agree that she is not a good starting caster. She is rather complicated in that she requires a lot of "book keeping". She spends hit points to boost her rolls, or bring things back during her feat, and gets hit points back when things die. Its just with her there is a lot of things to keep track of all the time. a second reason is that she likes infantry, and tends to prefer bigger games, rather than smaller games. Bigger games = more infantry, which she loves. And bigger games are not where a newbie should be starting. start small, build up etc. but cut your teeth with other casters, and then move on to her and you'll be fine.

With regard to Kromac, his feat is a bit dull, but it has resulted in more caster kills than i could shake a stick at. 2 initial attacks, 7 fury worth of attacks, reload fury and then 7 fury more worth of attacks. At excellent MAT and P+S. Add to that his immense threat range (13" with jump) and you've got a caster, that with just physical presence can dominate the board against any amount of squishy casters (they end up within 13" of him, he can kill them). The "kromac goes berzerk with 16 attacks" approach is valid, but there is any number of reasons why 14 fury is a good thing too - if you want to bombard the board with rifts, or need that extra spell up etc. trust me, it works. it does not need to be flashy!

Thanks okay so based on that I'll hold out on Morv2 til a bit later. Thanks for that, I didn't realise she was so Infantry centric, and I don't wanna buy loads of infantry yet haha.

Glad to hear that about Moshar. I really like the look of him, both models wise and in terms of his spells and stuff. Dunno why but something about him just sings to me.

Hmm. From that, Kromac does sound quite interesting actually. And Kaya2 for the beast aspect...

So taking away Morv2 for now, it's between Moshar, Kaya2 and Kromac...not really sure where to go.

Thanks for putting up with my awkward questions

Kromac is a blender. I've only played against him, and my opponent would usually sit back and buff for a while, then slingshot Kromac in beastmode and kill kill kill kill kill.
