Wait, so it only provides news? That seems...kinda useless.

The screen shots look like this app just regurgitates whats on the webstore? So links are apps now?

A self contained, branding laden, single purpose RSS feed reader seems exactly like something the lead paint chewers at GW corporate would think was a good idea.

Funny, downloading an app which has the only purpose of spamming you with advertisements. I'm surprised GW isn't charging for it.

I for one am glad that GW continues to ignore the majority of tablet and phone owners in the world (android)...way to ignore 80% of the market!! whoohoo. /sarcasm

Really though, I wouldn't download this app based upon current information, I'm the type of person who turns off all notifications on the apps I do install.

"App that regurgitates all our content in mobile-friendly form but otherwise adds nothing" is the default in my industry, the news business. I wonder if GW thinks of itself as constantly providing eagerly-awaited new content (codexes, expansions, models, etc etc) and adopted a news model....or maybe this kind of lazy app is common in multiple industries.

And it's not like people who actually care don't already know what's being released before GW actually announces it anyway....

Somebody said in a meeting somewhere, "we need to increase our web presence and social media and mobile synergy!"

"LiveJournal is big -- why don't we do a LiveJournal on Second Life's Facebook?"

"Ooh, I know, I know, we should do an app."

[everyone pauses, awestruck, as a soft golden light fills the room]

"GENIUS!"

I suspect they'll be rolling it out for Android at some point. Nothing to get your knickers in a bunch over really.

Oddly (or possibly not so) I don't own a pair of knickers which explains why I don't care what "news" apps GW makes.

Makes a lot of sense to develop for Apple first, just as with the digital Codexes.
Android has a huge variety of devices, and the app needs to be made compatible with them all, an issue you don't get so much when developing Apple apps.
Easier platform to develop on, then you can test the water before rolling it out to other platforms.

So, I'll just say it:

There are plenty of people playing 40K or WHFB that don't troll around on internet forums for their gaming news.

This app is obviously for them.

There are plenty of other apps I won't use. Doesn't mean I bitch and moan every time a company releases one.

No, no, no. Second Life's MySpace page.

But...

But...

GW does not release news?

So it's just tell you what's up for preorder? So you'll find out a month after everyone else?

Granted, there must be some of them. But I'd like to see the Venn diagram of iPhone owning, app downloading, wargamers that don't look on at least one or two wargaming websites a few times a week - that can't be very many.

I can't provide you with a venn....but I can say that of all the 40k/WHFB players at my LGS (which is around 20-30 total), I'm literally the only one that reads/contributes to Dakka.

Granted, a lot of them do have Androids. And one dude still has a flip phone.....

You do realise that software development doesn't work like that? You don't have to develop an app that works for "every single flavour of android device", just like you don't have to develop applications that work for every different computer that happens to use Windows...

You just develop the app for Android and every device that uses Android will automatically work with that app, especially if the app is as simple as this glorified RSS reader.

Wouldn't just be Dakka though, you mean not a one of them even lurks on Dakka, BoLS, Warseer, Faiet, Bolter and Chainsword... Etc etc or doesn't belong to some wargaming group on some sort of social media platform?

I'd say if that were the case then you're part of an extremely atypical group, even the slightly odd guy in our gaming group who won't sign up in case the CIA employ mind control on him (or something) still lurks the club page now and then.

Actually, not in this case. Android is a much more fragmented platform in terms of both hardware and software than Apple, so why you wouldn't need to write a different version for every single model of Android phone in existence, if you wanted it to work well on as many as possible, you'd need to do a lot more development and testing than with IOS.

Em....Honestly, I know of the 7 dudes that I primarily play with, none of them are on any of those websites. Hell, I've never even been to Warseer on purpose.

I think two of them get info from 4chan? Maybe?

I think I'm, honestly, usually their pipeline for gak, and then it gets posted to our facebook group.

Honestly, I'd rather get my GW info via an app than on here anyways. The N&R threads for GW stuff are usually both quite long and quite volatile.

You do realize that this is almost completely wrong, right?

I mean, I have no desire to turn this into an Android v iOS debate, but the reason a lot of developers START with iOS is because they can do it more quickly and have to test far fewer devices.

You do realise that I'm an actual software developer, right? The android development suite handles all of the compatibility issues that may arise from multi-platform support, all that a developer needs to do is choose what devices his app will support and the developer studio will do the rest.

The reason why a lot of developers still start with iOS is because, statistically speaking, iOS users are more likely to actually spend money on apps when compared to Android users and as such, apps will generate more money from iOS users than from android users, it has nothing to do with how hard or how easy it is to develop an app for iOS or for Android.
