Thrown this together to try out Rangers... a bit different from my usual lists!

Probably goes around conventional wisdom, but what do people think? If I didn't know I was facing Dwarves, (he knows I have Wood Elves and what kind of army I'm playing, so a little tailoring is fine), I'd swap the Moonfire Shafts for Arcane Bodkins.

Heroes:
Shadowdancer with Helm of the Hunt
Waystalker

Core:
12 Glade Guard with Lord's Bowman Moonfire Shot
12 Glade Guard, Lord's Bowman, Arcane Bodkins

Special:
6 Deepwood Scouts, Arcane Bodkins
7 Wardancers, Bladesinger
10 Wyldwood Rangers, Warden, Musician, Standard

Rare:
5 Waywatchers
5 Waywatchers

The Shadowdancer goes in with the Rangers.

The assumption that Dwarfs are heavily armoured is often a mistake; heavy armour and a great weapon is only a 5+.
I wouldn't bother bringing the Bodkins.

Wounds caused by 15 Glade Guard to:

5+ save Dwarfs-
1. Bodkins- 2.5
2. Moonfire- 3.2
3. Hagsbane- 3.5

3+ save Dwarfs
1. Bodkins- 2.1
2. Moonfire 1.9
3. Hagsbane 2.1

So, as can be seen, Hagsbane are better (and cheaper), even against high-armour units.
The only time they cease to be effective is when they're at a -4 or more to shoot. Which is...unlikely.
And Hagsbane are vastly superior when it comes to shooting at high-T models, like Dwarfen war machines.

The charts are on twitter.

600 points of glade guard with bodkins are the sweet spot.

I agree that in small numbers Hagbane and Trueflight are the best, but the more models you get against a 3+ save, the more wounds get through the armour.

What is that, like 35 models?

I can't imagine how unit size is going to matter; one Glade Guard does X wounds per turn against a given target. 10 Glade Guard do 10X wounds, 50 do 50X.

I was more worried about T4 than 5+ or 3+ saves... have I misunderstood something about how the arrows work? Wouldn't wounding on 4+ instead of 5+ make Moonfire better than Hagsbane against standard Dwarven infantry?

Again, take a look at the numbers. 15 Glade Guard vs:

T2-
Hagsbane 5.8
Moonfire 6.2

T3-
Hagsbane 5
Moonfire 5

T4-
Hagsbane 4.2
Moonfire 3.8

T5-
Hagsbane 3.3
Moonfire 2.5

T6+-
Hagsbane 3.3
Moonfire 1.3

+1 to Wound is okay. Auto-wounding on a 6 works is better. Until you're suffering -4 to shoot or more.
Hagsbane is hands-down #1 Best Arrow. Trueflight comes after. Moon/star Fire are more expensive than Hagsbane, are situational, and even then get less results. Swiftshiver is good in one very specific situation. Arcane Bodkins are pretty much at the bottom of the list.
I really wish they'd have taken the time to crunch some numbers before they assigned point values.

The numbers don't mean anything to me without more information. Is that wounds caused? Unsaved wounds? Without the workings, I can't check to see if you've made errors.

That said, having now played the game, I certainly found myself wishing that I had taken Hagsbanes instead of Moonshots. All those wasted sixes. ^^;

Since both arrows levy the same penalty to armour saves, wounds caused and unsaved wounds will have the same proportions.
The above example is assuming a -1 to hit as well. But again, that has no effect on the proportions.

If you doubt the math, do your own calculations. Doesn't matter if I don't count armour and you do it versus a 1+, or if I'm assuming you hit on 9+ and you're assuming you need 3's. If the math is right, the options will be the same, by comparison.

Just to be clear, though: 15 Glade Guard, not having moved, shooting at long range, not at skirmishers or into cover or with any other To Hit modifiers applied, perform as follows:

Against T5 opponents...
- 15 Hagsbane shots need a 4+, so 7.5 hit. 2.5 are 6's, so those automatically wound, and the last 5 need 6's, so that's .8 wounds, for a total of 3.3 wounds caused.
- 15 Moonfire shots need a 4+, so 7.5 hit. They need 3's to wound, so that's 2.5 wounds caused.

OK, that makes sense. Also, I have to apologise. Before the game yesterday, I was labouring under the misapprehension that Poison was done on the To Wound roll, because it's been so long since I actually got to play fantasy that I had forgotten that there's nothing you can't wound. ^^;

I'd put some dryads in there as I find them really cool.

They also suck. A lot.

Sadly, they're just not good anymore. S3 makes it so hard for them to be of any use.
