Do tourneys motivate you guys to paint? I've got one coming up on the 8th and suddenly have motivation to try and crank out my vostroyans!

40k and fantasy are the only tournaments I have seen where painting needs to be enforced. I never have been apart of a GW game tournament but yea for the other games it does motivate me. Im not gonna be the only guy who doesnt have a painted army.

As I only field painted stuff, yes. If I want to use the shiny new unit, I need to slap some color on it. While they might be little, casual, FLGS, tournaments, they do act as deadlines and motivators.

If the tournament uses a composite score then yes. Otherwise no.

I don't play anything that's not painted, even in friendly games. (as in my own stuff.)

I also have this personal rule - if I want to use a unit in a list then I'd better get it painted.

Don't play in tourneys though, I find the idea of 40K tourneys to be like trying to catch a black cat in a dark room.

Ill paint right before the tournament but after I get beat by screamer star, centurion star and wave serpent spam I take the next 3 weeks off.

I really try not to field unpainted models; in my last 1.5k point game I fielded a total of 4 unpainted in an army of 120-odd minis.

What other tricks do you guys use for motivation?

My trick is that I love to paint.

Tournaments don't provide me with motivation to paint stuff.

Wanting to use them on the tabletop is what inspires me to paint the things.

I WON'T use an unpainted model on the tabletop. Not even to test rules out for a unit. So if I want to use it, it HAS to be painted. Not just undercoated, either. 3 colours on top of the undercoat. Minimum.

I came into the hobby via historical gaming, though - where using unpainted models is anathema. Where each unit's abilities are often determined by their paint scheme.

I keep a blog here on Dakka. (link in sig). I update it once a week, normally on friday, to help keep me honest and record my progress. Plus show off and get feedback.

Mix up what you are working on. It helps prevent burnout. 5 troops, sarge, 5 more troops, tank, etc. Also mix building and painting.

Only play painted. If the mechanical crunch part of you want to use the unit, the artistic side needs to get at it.

Envision the unit on the tabletop and in the fluff. Think of all the cool tricks it can pull, and how awesome it will be.

Hide most of your grey plastic, display your finished product.

An upcoming game might inspire me to paint. I want to make sure my models do not become confused on the table with someone else's models, so i put some paint on them to make sure I know which ones are mine. Actually though I have gotten pretty much caught up on all my painting so I really don't play unpainted models much. I have a few here and there but not a ton. So now i just try to keep a steady pace and paint stuff that I want to try out next.

Paint every day, even if it's only for 5 minutes.
Don't play with any of your unpainted models.

And my final, ultimate motivational trick:
Work from home, and paint while you're stuck on conference calls

I have used this trick too. Got a squad of tankbustas done on a day when I had 3 conference calls.

No, my army looking better than the guy's across from me, which nine times out of ten is poorly painted(not knocking skill levels but I am more competitive on painting than I am tactics), motivates me to paint and paint well. Its why I generally wont field an army unpainted and agonize over paint schemes for months(and years for elder).

I usually use upcoming games as motivation really. But I enjoy painting too.

I watch painting tutorials, they ussaly give me the painting bug expecially if its about what I'm going to paint.

On topic,
Yes. Weather the tourney requiers it or not, I do it anyway as I hate fielding grey and black.

I don't play tournaments as such, but any game or campaign coming up will motivate me to try and crank out at least one new unit if I've got the plastic sitting in queue.

My biggest motivating factor with my vostroyans is the look terrible bare metal
