So, I'm restarting my Tau army and got a huge amount of NIB/NOS stuff in a trade and I'm already looking at how to make some fun, unorthodox lists. I know I've got some typical units but I tried to mix it up with the stealth teams and lots of mobile FW. Since i'm returning and don't know the ins-and-outs of the Codex quite yet, feedback is always appreciated. I'm not super worried about winning though. So...

HQ -

Commander - TL Plasma, Shield generator, stim, iridium armor
Bodyguard x2 - TL plasma

Elite-

Riptide - Ion accelerator, TL Fusion.

Stealth Suits - x6, 2x Fusion

Stealth Suits - x6, 2x Fusion

Troops -

8x FW, Dfish, Dpods

8x FW, Dfish, Dpods

8x FW, Dfish, Dpods

8x FW, Dfish, Dpods

Heavy -

2x Broadsides -

Misslebroads

1x Skyray

Should come out to 1750, might be off by a little.

Magnets on the suits, that is the first thing you need to do.

Your stealth suits are not going to work well as is. the only time I find the 2 FB to be worth the points is with Shadowsun. you get four FB and an extra 6-8 wounds for Shadowsun. Make them all burst cannons add ATS for sniping, or CDS for brutal overwatch fun. If you just have to stay as is get atleast 2 Target locks, 1 on each FB so your not wasting shots.

Sheild Generator is mostly not worth the points, especially on an iridum commander, it gets better on a pure tank/buffmander.

You want a dpod on the Skyray too.

The list is not nearly as bad as these guys say it is.

A rhino rush list placed rather high at BAO, Tau players have adopted too much of a gunline mentality and that is hurting them in the top GT meta. They don;t see the value of a relatively durabe obj secured vehicle. Honestly, in every GT I have went to in the last 3 Months I have faced Tau 8-9 times, and literally tabled every single one /had them resign by turn 4-5. If they had more mobile scoring, they could have tied, or possibly even won through objectives.

Now, you are not planning to be a part of this meta, and thats great., but you have critically low number of markerlights. I think the rule is one reliable markerlight source per 500 points.

I too was surprised to see some of the top lists at BAO. Three that stuck out were:
-UM Drop pods led by Calgar
-UM Drop pods led by Calgar and Tiggy
-Necron Air backed up by 35 Cultists and a Juggerlord. That had to have taken some people by surprise.

4th Overall at BAO. It's got Fire Warriors in Fish AND Shadowsun! Zany!

Thanks, ForAnAngel is actually my friend so he was just messing with me . For the markerlight issue... hrm... I was honestly hoping to get around the need for that with simple volume of fire but I could see your point about needing them to just boost ballistic skill in general. Maybe I could drop a model or two from a squad and give them some marker drones? Or even the shield generator from my commander. Would give me room for the dpods on the skyray too then I think.

Actually on that note, we're both getting back into the game, what's the usual/mainstay point values played now?

P.S.... I love your avatar Lord Commissar.

Stationary Gunline Tau is not as strong as it used to be. Advancing Gunline Tau is still pretty good, just most Tau players don't like to get FW's any closer than they have to so advancing them is counter intuitive.

I find Markerlights are overrated. I can generally get enough dakka added to my lists to make up for not having markerlights.

I ma not at all surprised by the Um lists being good. The 35 Cultists, yeah that is a surprise.

Merlic's list is excellent. I had never even considered Shadowsun + Mark'O but that is a really effective marklight unit.
