So over the course of the years being a part of this hobby, how many times have you impulse bought stuff and ended up snagging good deals, but not having enough time to actually turn them all into assembled, painted miniatures?

Me...I got half a cupboard full of sealed boxes (usually impulse purchases when an army got its codex updated and I decided to start a small force; before GW did their annual price hikes as they used to do; during one of Wayland Games' free shipping limited time offers (back when they had a 20% off on most items but usually didnt offer free shipping) etc., with some of them dating as far back as 2009. I'll get them turned into battle ready armies... ...eventually.

How big is your backlog?

I don't have any unopened boxes. I have a lot of unpainted stuff, but at the very least I'll crack it open, assemble one and paint it up. If I don't even have the time to do that, I won't buy it.

None. The only unbuilt models I have are 5 CSM awaiting conversion to LOTD, other than that, everything is at the very least built and most of it is painted.

Still in the shrinkwrap/blister? Only a few things. Assuming I don’t count the box of stuff that one of my previous FLGS could not move in their going-out-of-buisness sale and gave me. In which case, I have a lot.

Opened, sitting around, I have quite a lot though.

One and a third, I think. I still have an Orc Boar Boys box in my car from months ago (bought it when I was going to start playing Orks again, then gave up after the Wolves codex came out), and I have a single Eldar Jetbike still in the box, unassembled, because I never got around to throwing it together. In fairness, though, I didn't (and still don't) exactly need it, I mainly wanted to make use of some extra bits I had for more warlocks.

I don't have a problem, I swear.

Currently, I have 8 unopened boxes (6 boxes of Orks, 1 Venerable Dreadnought and 1 Bastion).

I have 10 marines with bolters that are unassembled, and a quarter of DV.

I bought a bunch right before I took a break, and have been slowly building DV with the time I have had recently.

I have a friend that could open his own store with the number of Tyranids he bought several months ago. I am slow to paint, but I always build models within hours of getting them, even if I have to bring them to work because I got a shipment just before I leave

For the most part, I build as I buy. For the most part, nothing sits unbuilt for very long. As of right now, I have half a squad of Grey Hunters that are unbuilt and an unfinished Razorback. Also, my squad of Sternguards is waiting for more Combi-Meltas. In a couple days, I will be receiving two Land Speeders and a Storm Talon, and that is going to greatly increase my backlog.

I generally check sprues before i leave the store, but I also don't like seeing anything unassembled for too long. Even if that means partial assembly to prepare for painting.

Sounds like the plot to a really odd horror movie.

I'm envisioning a scene with an attractive woman (in thick rimmed glasses because she's a gamer) sitting at a table putting the final brushstrokes on a mini, when she hears a strange thump from upstairs. She rises and says "Hello? Is anyone there?". She slowly walks to the kitchen and as she rounds a corner, a pair of glowing eyes peer down at her from the top of a flight of stairs. She steps back knocking over a framed picture, and a startled cat runs down the steps and out of the room. She begins to sigh in relief when a pair of gauntleted hands drag her into the closet behind her. She emits a muffled scream as the door slams shut and the audience is left with only a muted, gravelly noise: "For the Emperor..." The video suddenly cuts to black.

I voted less than 5. 2 boxes of drones of Nurgle, Defiance line and Bloodletter.

Then remembered there are 2 Spartan tanks, a contemptor dread and 2 blight drones that need assembly. But forge world doesn’t come in boxes.

Kind of a trick question. I have about 10 still in shrink wrap, but 50+ with untouched sprues and 200+ boxes that are less than 50% painted. That doesn't include single unit blisters, which I can't even guess.

Well considering I only took up the hobby towards the end of last year, 99% of my collection thus far is still in unopened boxes. (DV set + 10 or so boxes) I'm still working through painting up the random Tyranid collection I was given by a friend so I could learn to properly paint my minis before moving onto my precious and expensive Dark Angels army.
