So I imagine those of us who own their own game board and terrain will obviously always have a chance to play a game against themselves. It's also attractive to those who dont have any immediate friends who are into 40k and would need to travel some time to reach their GW store for pickup games.

Have you done it? Does 40k lose its charm when you know your opponent's next move, or will you be so engrossed in the battle itself (measuring, dice rolling etc.) that you spontaneously take decisions when the moments happen, so you never feel like you already know whats gonna happen?

Personally what I like about playing alone is that I have all the time in the world to practice with the rules and get a solid feel of how the game mechanics work without having to keep an impatient opponent and his whims in mind

GW is scared of girls. Why do you think they have so much trouble sculpting attractive female models? Because girls have cooties and the staff at GW don't like looking at them for too long because it makes them feel funny in their naughty place.

Did it with Mordheim, that was pretty fun as a character building exercise.

I do it a lot, not just with 40k but Infinity, Malifaux and Deadzone too, and I have to say 40k is probably the easiest to play against one's self and also loses the least. Infinity loses the effect of hidden units and the stealth aspect, and Deazone and Malifaux lose out on the secrecy that a hand of cards gives. On the table, there's not a lot to hide in 40k beyond tactics, so I don't feel like I'm cheating myself.

It'll never match up to the real thing, but any game is better than no game!

That was pretty much how I learnt to play after being introduced to the game. I don't like to play games where I don't feel I have a chance of winning.

Now, if I lose its because my tactics suck not my knowledge of the rules

Also have used it to "test" some scenarios for club campaigns before running them.

I often run solo games on Vassal to test my lists against other armies, specially those I can't find amongst my regular opponents.

Yes I have. It's a nice thing to have a table set out and just play a turn here and there when you need to roll dice and remove orkz.

I need a second army though.

Ive done it often to try a unit to see how it plays and to figure out the mechanics of a unit. I always enjoy playing with myself. Although playing with others has more social appeal.

I'm not a social person so playing a game on my own always got me more familiar with units, new rules, new armies and overall tactics without having to think about being friendly to some opponent. The only appeal lost is the 'surprise tactic' that can't happen. The sudden 48" Jetbike move from four units that completely changes the table isn't a thing when you plan it out yourself. It's still a way to work on solid tactics that have more difficult counters using specific units or foreign things to make the game smoother against an actual opponent.

From one game to another I grabbed jetbikes, Power From Pain, Combat Drugs, many Assault based special rules, many Psyker abilities, a new tank, and such things that I would not have been able to use as smoothly, would have clumsied about in the rulebooks for a turn, and overall lessened the game with my own incompetence.

I do it every night when my fiance is out of town for work.

Oh you said against... Nope, it seems boring to me. The local GW and 4 FLGS' are always packed with 40k players and I have a few that I can call to come over for a game if the stores are closed. If I can't get a game of 40k I have a good WMH group I can game with also.

I've played Chess and Heroscape verses myself, but it honestly never occured to me to try 40K. I don't think I would. 40K for me often involves misdirecting my opponenets attention and capitalizing on his mistakes. Playing 40K against myself seems much like an exercise in Math hammer with miniatures.

Still, it could prove useful to work out the kinks when fielding a new codex.

Indeed, this would be an exercise in math hammer.
