I read a good article on WWPD about painting, and it led to a conclusion which i agree with is not using metalic paints

Im terrible with them and i just cant get metal to look good

so my question is guys whats the better alternative to using metalics for stuff like tracks and machine guns and whartnot?

Gray is often used for white metals like steel, unrusted iron, gun metal, etc.
I've also seen brown/brown & orange for rusted metal like tank treads.

I have recently started using non-metallics for FoW minis within the last few months and I definitely prefer them. Privateer pretty much nailed it on colors. Various shades of gray for your metals and for the rusted metal you will something more in a brown or orange. I think the one I have been using for rusted metal is saddle red from Vallejo. It kind of a dark reddish-brown color and then I build up highlights from there. I then use a brown wash or ink for the shading on both rust and basic metal.

Agreed I use grey for FoW metals, but occasionally use vallejo's brassy brass

I haven't seen the article you are talking about, but have you tried things like Vallejo's liquid metals or some of the enamel metallics?

Most acrylic metallics have flakes that are out of scale with 15mm models, it makes them look less like real metals and more like cars painted with a metallic flake paint.

But vallejo's liquid gold and many enamels have a much smoother finish which I think would be more appropriate at 15mm scale.
