With the promise of new "real" plastic kits, I went ahead and dropped a few bucks on eBay to get the CoC starter set. I am going to force myself to get these built and painted as quickly as possible so I can start learning the rules at a new game store that's opening up this November in Bellevue, WA.

So, some questions then. As I am still a total noob at this game (I have a Skorn army but never played) which armies should I avoid pairing up against as I learn? In other words, which pairing would hinder my learning due to whatever?

CoC is jack heavy. What do I need to "be aware of" as I play?

Which units/sets should I look at as my next purchase to build a well rounded army?

With COC their induction rule is the hardest thing to get down. That's when a spent focus from a jack can be sent to a nearby friendly jack and once that's spent, can be sent to another friendly jack. It makes your order of activation MUCH more important than other factions.

In the starter set is Syntherion who is THE jack caster of COC. Get more jacks. There's no wrong choice. Figure out how you want to play your army and what roles need to be covered and you'll be good.
Oh, and get the Corollary, that things worth its weight in gold.

where the wind comes sweeping down the plains

Get the steel primer, then the armor wash them...hit them with shades of arcane (lightning blue/magic blue) blue/white in the lighted spots...

I put some burnished gold on gears, washed agrax...touch up the whole thing with silver highlights, done

I can do a whole CoC army on a weekend, to a real good tabletop look. I spent more time on the casters, and Aurora took a night all by herself, but I can knock out jacks by the truckload

Syntherion's tier list is basically how you want to run him. You can run with literally the only units being Optifex Directive.

I usually see the Prime Axiom, Corollary, 2 monitors, and then a pair of some other heavy jack. Then there will be 3ish Galvanizers, a Diffuser, and a Mitigator. Add servitors, a couple units of Optifex, and arc node guys to taste.

Nothing is really different with other casters either. They'll just have fewer jacks and more infantry.

I wouldn't avoid playing any faction. Cryx and Retribution are likely going to be hard match ups for you using the jack heavy approach, but not unwinnable. Take yourself out of the 40k mindset (which I think you play? Apologies if it's something else Breotan). Even a game of WM/H where you get your head caved in (which will occur a lot as you learn the game) will teach you a lot more than any game you play of 40k.

Get the Corollary. That little bugger makes the whole faction work that much better. I'd aim for at least one set of all the Servitors (Accretion, Attunement, Reflex, Elimination) as they make great point fillers and are very flexible. Pick up at least another walking jack kit, magnetize it and the one you have to give yourself options. Get the light jack that doesn't come in the battlebox (diffuser maybe? Or mitigator? The names still elude me after playing with them for over a year!). Also look into the Optifex Directive, as they can help shore up a few of your weak spots.

None of this is in any particular order, other than the Corollary. Regardless, welcome to the service of the Maiden of Gears!

No wargames these days, more DM/Painting.

I paint things occasionally. Some things you may even like!

Awesome. Thanks, guys.

Stuff should be getting here around a week or so. The Mox Boarding House opens the first weekend of December so I should be good for putting together and painting the starter models, at least in a basic scheme like karandras15 listed. I'll save my meticulous work for the "true" plastic kits once they hit the shelves.

I think I heard about that store on my favorite podcast. From what I understand it is within walking distance from PP HQ so you may get the pleasure of learning the game from one of the people who help make it.

Make the most of the PVC jack kits because it may take a year or three for the existing jacks to get a change to the new kind of plastic. Get two of each heavy kit and magnetize them to be used as any variant. Convergence doesn't have a jack with bad rules, just tasks that are poorly suited to some of them.

The corollary is a must (as many above have said). Optifex directive and attunement servitors are key support pieces. Other servitors are solid purchases as well. Enigma foundries are really powerful but you need to save them for after you are good at using your infantry.

The melee units seem to be easier to use (they are for my friend who's been playing the faction for a few months). The ranged units do good work but die too fast on the front line. Recipricators and eradicators seem like the strongest units from the perspective of someone who's played against convergence several times. Obstructors are so cheap in points that you can probably get them to work.

Obviously you are excited about the battle engine and it is one of the stronger engines. Think of it as a giant artillery that can fire off multiple spray templates. Directrix and Lucant have the most direct synergy with it but I'm sure it can be used with any caster reasonably well.

It's probably going to be even longer considering a lot of stuff hasn't even made the switch to PVC yet and considering the newness of the jack molds, it probably won't be changing material anytime soon

Starter set came in today. I'll be cleaning and assembling them tomorrow and Friday. Depending on how I feel, I may or may not be able to get in any gaming this weekend.

Reminds me of a bedtime story for Hordes players I wrote. This time should be better. I went ahead and got some instruction articles posted to my "favorites" ahead of time.

Mine were pvc so... I guess I'm not worthy.

Anyway, Privateer Press is having a big Grand Open Steamroller at the Mox Boarding House as part of their store opening celebrations (technically it's a week after the grand opening but the store will be flooded with magic players that weekend so this is better). 50 points is more Cyriss than I have right now but hopefully I can get a good enough setup in the next month to be able to participate.

A steamroller event is a good learning tool after you know the basics and know your army somewhat. I wouldn't recommend it if you aren't comfortable with basic game rules yet. It can be very frustrating looking up wordings of rules on your cards and being surprised by enemy tactics you've never seen before all while under the deathclock.

So, I was looking over the models that come in the starter set and was wondering...

The Cypher, when sold separately, comes with all parts to make the Cipher, Inverter, or Monitor. Does the one in the starter also come with all these parts?

It looks like the best place to magnetize the light vectors is at the joint between the legs and the abdomen section. Is there a better way? Should I not even worry about it?

No it doesn't. Its basically the heavy kit minus the parts to make an Inverter and Monitor.

So its just a Cipher, but if you get a heavy kit its compatible with the extra bits. So magnetizing it will be easy.

As far as the lights, I wouldn't magnetize them. They don't come in multi-kits.

Great. I won't worry about the light vectors and I'll go ahead with magnetizing Cipher so when I get another heavy vector it'll be ready.

It seems to me based on what I've seen that CoC are up there with Necrons as one of the easiest armies in any game to paint well and, if not look excellent, then at least tabletop ready. Is that a fair assessment?

Fully agreed. It takes so little effort to paint my COC guys it's ridiculous. I have to buy Khador to get my painting groove on.
This little number took no time at all.

Quick question. Miniature Market has some Cyriss stuff on clearance. How many sets of any given infantry unit should I consider picking up? Will just one do? Or should I get two for a ten man unit?

At first, just one will suffice. And the boxes all should come with a complete unit. The medium based units are only 5 man units at max.

Later if you start expanding into tiers you might pick up second units of a particular unit.

Yeah all the infantry boxes come with a full unit and its rare (particular as you build towards 50pts) to run duplicate units. I made this mistake when I was starting out, the art on the boxes and the images online all show 5 guys - so I now have an extra unit of Mage Hunter Strike Force that I have never used.

The actual melee models seem to be simpler to make use of .The actual ranged devices carry out good work yet perish too fast about the front collection.
