Hi guys, I've had this Dragon Ogre on my desk for the past few weeks. He is finally done, but I'm hoping for some C&C before I jump into the other two I have... (zoomable in the gallery) There are two things that get me when I look at it:- -The area between the skin and scales. (I used a green glaze) -The hard scales/spikes on his back. I left them dark green / black for lack of a better complimentary colour. Anything else you see? Thanks a lot, Z **EDIT** Dragon Ogre #2 has been completed, and is posted further below.

I like the transition between scales and skin, thats awesome If your looking to do something with the scales, then what about doing it the other way? so the scales have a little flesh blended into them, as if its not only his skin going green, but also the scales starting as hardened flesh with a tint of green, becoming more and more like pure scales as it goes down his back?
I certainly think, that to really bring the model out you should do something with the scales, as otherwise the scales are a little lost within the dark green of the body.

The skin's great but the metal is a bit flat IMO. Could do with a wash of dark brown or black to bring out the details. Also I would try & make the armour look slightly different from the weapon.
Just my thoughts.

Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!! |

The metal does look a little too clean for chaos. I might have gone with a brown/bone for the claws and spines, or at least tapered them off to a lighter color. Something to contrast them with the scaly skin better.
The transition between scale and skin seems to happen in bands. Dark -> light -> skin. I know you use an airbrush, could you feather the transition a little more?
Nitpicks aside, nice looking ogre you have there.

Thanks for your comments, folks.
@SolarShock. As for the scales, I've made them more green, with a blue wash in the recesses for contrast. I'm going to add a yellow glaze on the scales, just for extra highlights.
@Bubber. Thanks for the comment. When you say 'the metal is a bit flat', are you refering to the silver, or gold? Do you think a brown wash will be enough to change the weapon's metal colour from looking like the armour?
@Nev. I like the clean metal look, tbh. What would you suggest to change it? Rust patches? Blood? I'll try lighter claws this time. Start with a grey and do light grey highlights, see how that looks. I'm trying to stay away from bone on the claws. They are claws, not bones at the end of the day
I've started work on the second one. I've blocked in the green and flesh, so far. I'll be posting the next one up as soon as I'm done.

I might do a black/brown wash, just grunge things up a little. But if you like it, nothing wrong. Just a preference thing.
The dark claws just blend visually with the dark scales. I’d like them to stand out a little just to add some “pop” to the guy. Once again, nothing wrong with how you executed what you did, just my style is a little different. One thing you could do if you want to keep the palette the same would be to do a lighter edge highlight on the scales near where the claws/spines join, just to visually separate them.

Thanks again, guys.
Here is the second dragon ogre, with a comparison shot of the two so far.
From briefly looking at the pictures, I can see I haven't softened the transition between the green and flesh tones. I'll get right on that.
I'd appreciate any more of your comments - there is one more of these guys to do

Looking really nice
I do think the scales have much more depth now that you've added a little extra colour to it.
Only issue atm, is the photos, when I click through to the gallery so I can zoom in I find they lose quality really quickly, which is making it hard to really get a good comparison. Maybe take a few higher res photos?I do like how you combine the photos for the thread view, but when thats in the gallery its impossible to zoom in on and get a good look.
I don't know about your metals, I like them how they are, but they could equally be as nice if you dirtied them up a little as some people have suggested. Depends what look your going or, I play orks so i tend to rust and dirty up all my metals anyway, as I like the grim look, but YMMV.

On the first DO, thumbs-up for the effort to transition between the scales and skin. I think the glaze colour might be a little too light and warm, though - the transparent layer over the skin is creating a pretty vivid yellow that maybe creates as much division as it does cohesion.
Not being au fait with most GW paints these days, is there a darker, cooler green glaze or shade? Or can you create a glaze with one of the greens you used for the scales?
I agree that the metal seems too clean for the usual depiction of chaos forces, but y'know, I kinda like it like that. It's different. The 'Chaos must be rusty and caked in filth' trope gets a bit samey after a while.

Looking good.
I’m not sure how to blend the scales into the skin. Part of the problem with composite monsters I guess. I like the new one better then the first, little things add up; he just seems to be defined a bit better.
