Hello Dakka dakka.

After a short break from 40k im getting back into some modeling while school slows down. Now before i say what i have i want to point out my most common openent is very good space wolf player who tables me every time. He plays a thunderwolf calvary squadd with 2+/3++, which i can never seem to brake. Last game i only got 2 wounds on that squad. He also usualy brings two vengence batteries. (The battlecannon fortificatin witha line wolf inside) and the space wolf transport which has an absurd amount of fire power. He also pulls off a deadly alpha strike with drop pods.

Now i am trying to decide between an additional riptide, a hammer head, or one of the flyers. While i dont want to per say counter his list...but i want to counter his list.

Currently i have:
2 commanders
10 crisis suits
1 riptide
2 broadsides
6 stealth suits
10 pa thfinders woth their drones
36 fire warriors
2 devil fish
2 piranhas
and a 3 man sniper team

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You already have a very sizeable Tau force...that sure looks like more than 2000 points to me on first glance.

I think what really matters is not what extra stuff you buy, but how you equip your army. E.g., every single one of your crisis suits should either take double plasma (if you have enough plasma rifle bitz) or plasma/melta. Use their mobility to outmaneuver his thunderwolf cavalry (I dont think every single wolf can have a 2+/3++ save???)

Since the space wolf player plays aggressively, you can build your strategy around him coming to your base instead of investing points to get some of your stuff to his table side.

Also, try breaking up your pathfinders into 2 squads so you can position your markerlight generators on the battlefield more tactically - should he pour fire into one, you'll only lose 5 guys max as opposed to the entire squad.

The Ravarna i can get behind. The other one does not, on paper, seems as good since o oh 12" range.

Should i make broadsides missile sides?

Why sky ray? My broadsides deal with air easily enough. The 1 shot by itself wouldn't really threaten a unit with a 3++

An additional broadside, to make a squad of 3 missile sides, or an additional riptide couldnt hurt.
Is it the ethereal that gives fire warriors within a specific range additional shots? Thats a lot of potential shots against drop pod units and wolves should you get the opportunity.

You NEED Pathfinders.

Skyray can give brutal damage to the gunship, i usually take 1skyray, Mark the incoming aircraft,Shot all missiles at the gunship and whats left over is killed by nearby ground troops, Using he Marker Lights.
Mass Plasma against the twc should do the Job.
The yvhara maybe only has 12 range but i use him agressively, eliminating nearby threats ...he can have ap2... Remember.
Riptide with ewo makes Short Prozess about drop pods... Look at those nice pieplates.
I take always the Fire cadre Formation with 3 missile Sides and 3 snipersides. Tank Hunter etc.. Marines get pe.. Dont give a gak.
On advancedtautactica is a good article about them.
When i know im gonna Face alot of 2+ 3+ and i dont want to Ultra cheese i take 3 Units of pathfinders One with darkstrider.
His Ability to lower t on Enemy is priceless.
The other pathfinders get Equipment with Ion rifles, overcharging them.shooting with Str 8 at T3 Marines or t4 twc... Meaannnsss instant kill with ap 2 btw 3.
Using skyrays to clear the heavens and then Using barracudas is also a good, possibility. Ion is the Word and the drones are a pain.
Against sw i usually try to alpha Strike as hard as possible.
Missiles, seeker missiles, overcharging every Gun,Using warlord traits etc.

A Word in the yvhara.. I own 2... I only use one because it wrecks havoc on whatever is in its way.i Never faced a squad that survived its attacks and was able to kill it in Return...so dar it killed... Grey Knight termi squad, deathwing Knight squad, grav cents, devastators, guard hq, twc squad with priest...

Do not kill. Do not rape. Do not steal. These are principles which every man of every faith can embrace.

You definitely have a good supply of models to establish a strong force. Missilesides will likely help you out with both the Thunderwolves and the flyer by sheer weight of str 7 shooting. I've found that to be the best way of taking those beasts out. Combined that with some dual plasma suits and marker lights to boost overall ballistic skill, and the wolves should start falling to all the saves they have to take. For the drop pods, I found an ion tide with interceptor will help dissuade overly aggressive play.

Overall it looks like you already have the models you need. It's now up to how you outfit those models and finding their optimum application.
