Welcome.
On this thread I will be keeping track of the progress of my Blood Ravens Army. It will show the progress from start to ..... We'll see when it's finished.

At this moment I'm working on:
10 Tactical Marines with missile launcher, plasmagun and sergeant with plasmapistol and chainsword.

On the shelf awaiting decals and weathering:
-1 Rhino
-10 Tactical Marines with missile launcher, meltagun and sergeant with plasmapistol and chainsword.
-Captain with Power fist and storm bolter.

On the shelf/In the box:
-Nothing

Projects:
Sergeant of the bench. A marine that was in the dark for a long time. Looking for a way out. Hearing the screams and voices of long past still haunting him. He kept his faith in the Emperor. He swore to himself that he would look to the sky and come back to the Blood Ravens. He would find a way to be with his battle brothers again. Now he has find his way. He will overlook the build and training of the new marines that will be recruited.

Spoiler:

Captain of the 2nd Compagny of the Blood Ravens Chapter.
Spoiler:

1st Tactical Squad of the 2nd Compagny of the Blood Ravens Chapter with dedicated Rhino transport.
Spoiler:

Nice intro, it's cool to see someone so pumped with their shiny new marines

Ok, first, the helmet magnetized to his leg is an awesome detail. Big thumbs up for that!

My suggestions:
- Edge Highlighting the red a bit. I noticed you did it with the black area of his shoulders pads, the red could use some love too to make it really pop

- If you notice, his "belt buckle" has some red on it. You might want to correct it. Same holds true for the grenades, there's a tiny bit of red on them.

- I too have an enormous problem with eyes, so here's the only tip I can offer: Always do them first above everything else. That way, if you are making a mess of the surrounding areas it doesn't matter.

Looks great!

Only one criticism, the red looks a little pinky. Not sure if it's the picture, my monitor, or the actual model. But just thought I'd mention it.

Good luck with your next batch of marines!

Does anyone like to paint eyes? If they truly are the window to the soul, all my models are poor, hate-filled, twisted things.

How I paint eyes:
1 Base coat the head
2 Paint the eyeball white
3 Dot of color in the middle of the eye: this is the hard part. Sometimes it’s easier to do a vertical line. You want to make sure it touches the top and bottom of the eye, and are looking in the same direction. If not, you get a bad case of the crazies.
4 Trim the slop, so the eye is back where it belongs.
5 (optional) Learn to accept that it doesn’t look as cool as you like, and use a helmet next time.

Nice looking marine you have there.

Well thanks for the replies guys I really appreciate it.

@ Nevelon: Learn to accept that it doesn't look as cool as you like may be the best advice haha.

@ Zambro: I made a picture with my camera instead of my phone it's down in this post. The colours are better on this picture. But the red is red and not pink.

@ TheDraconicLord: Indeed when I saw the pictures I noticed the red in the belt buckle and the grenades. Thanks for pointing those out. Well the eyes will be done lastly when I feel more confident in doing them on actual heads. Helmets are easier to do

@ James811: Maybe I will keep the marines shiny . Your Nurgle Knight looks awesome.

Well I made a rack today where I can store my sticks. I glue some of the parts on sticks to spray and paint them. This is easier than when they are on the model. So I did that and started with the backpacks and heads. I finished up some old heads/helmets I had still laying around in my bitsbox.
I also fixed some of the red on the belt buckle and grenades. Made a nicer picture with the camera instead of the phone and ordered the space marine codex and the imperial armour modelling masterclass book bundle and the forgeworld weathering powders.

Well a picture says a thousand words so here are some more pictures.

Better colour picture.

Some heads/helmets.

Here you can see what I mean with the sticks. It can hold up to 68 pieces.
Well I spraypainted the backpacks and heads/helmets. Now I'll be assembling the rest of the marines and start basecoating them.

@ Ayoku (Mark): Thank you very much.

I'm going to try and post regularly showing the progress and hoping to get feed back of what should be done better and what could be done differently. Althought it's still my army so if I like it I like it
As I really don't like to do the heads and eyes I started out with these just to get them out of the way. I don't like doing it cause I don't have the skill yet to do it properly (to my opinion).

Tomorrow I have a day of and will be painting all day. I'm preparing everything for tomorrow now and hopefully tomorrow I can show a lot more.

Well I had the day of today and thought that I would finish my tactical squad today but I'm allas far from it. I got caught up doing backpacks, pouches and some misc. items.
I started working on the sergeants backpack with the standard on it. All the shoulder plates are glued on sticks and undercoated white. So I can get on with it tomorrow.

So here are some update pictures.

Here are the backpacks. Sorry for the pinkish colour. This is due to the light and camera quality.

Here are some pouches and other misc. items.

A closer picture of the scanner without the harsh desklight. The grey part is what is going to be glued to his hand. After the gluing will be some touching up but I don't mind.

Well I hope you like what you see and that please C&C. Every help is appreciated and is always good to push even harder.

How do you photograph your minis? Under a lamp? Might want to look up some photography articles, you'd definately benefit from it.

I understand the reason for subassemblies, and do it to an extent with my own work. But it looks like you're painting completely pre-assembly.

At first I will get a few tactical squads and some heavy hitting squads. When I have a nice little army and some more experience with the Blood Ravens colour scheme and feel. Then I will go into special characters and try to recreate them as best as possible.
My sculpting skills are none existing but then again my painting skills were none too so who knows how they will turn out.

I photograph my minis with my phone. When they are completely done I will take photographs with my other camera and thanks for pointing out the photography articles. For the subassemblies, well I haven't done anything for 4 years and I'm getting back to it.
I'm trying to figure out how I can have the best control with my brush and hands. At this point I'm trying out subassemblies and yes for now almost everything is a subassembly. It's been a while but I like this way of painting.
It's a bit more work getting everything ready but I have more control and I can do little things at a time.

Smoother yes but quicker no. I have to first glue all the pieces to sticks. Then paint them. Then take them of the sticks. Cut away the glue and then fix any damaged parts. It's a bit more work but I like this aproach.

I do like this type of assembly line painting, but trying to do that with forgeworld kits is tough.

Well for now I've been using Revell Contacta Liquid which is just a plastic glue but it holds it together nicely. It will desolve the paint and make a good bond between two plastic pieces.

Well eventually I will be trying to make some characters which will also be Armamus with the nice hairdue. But for now and at first I'll be using vanilla marines with not to many conversions. I don;t have the parts or the know how yet to model correctly with green stuff.

A little update with all the little new things that I bought @ GW and came in from Forgeworld and my local gamingstore.
Well yesterday I went to Aachen and walked into the GW store over there and looked at what I wanted to expand my army. So I bought some more marines and a rhino. (Never made a vehicle so that will be new)

Then when I came home there was a nice surprise waiting for me. My Forgeworld order came in and it concisted of Imperial Armour Volume One & Two. All the weathering powders they have and some decal sheets for my Blood Ravens.

And the order from my local store came in as well. 3 Space Marine Commander boxes, some paints and spraypaints, Codex Space Marines, How To Paint Space Marines and Space Marines Omnibus.

I have everything ready to paint with the first squad of space marines. Tonight I have all night to paint and I'm hoping to have finished at least half of the squad. So that I can do the rest tomorrow and finish the first squad.
I can't finish it completely because I still have to get microset and microsol to work with the decals. So I can't put the decals on at this point but we'll see. Maybe tonight I'll make another update post.

Ooooo Nice!!!!

Looks like you're stocked up for the forseeable future.
For the rhino, it'd be good if you had some elastic bands to hand. Sometimes the join lines on the top of the vehicle doesn't close up properly. If you smack some elastic bands around it while it dries, it should hold the top/sides together and reduce the gap between joins.

Why 3 commander boxes?

Well here is the little update after an evening of painting. When I looked at the pictures I saw a few places that need touching up but so far they look like I want them to look. Still have to do the decals, some writing on shoulderpads and some weathering.
I drilled out the boltguns but am not sure if I still need to drill out the meltagun. But let's just post some pics.

And yet again, I made these pictures with my phone. It just just a update from some W.I.P. so my apologies for the pinkish colour.

Nice work so far. If I have one criticism, it's that the shading on the Sarge's helmet looks to have pooled and left two darker lines outside of where the deepest point actually is. Thinning your wash a bit, or even just going a bit lighter with the amount that's on your brush, should fix it.

As for painting eyes, you may find it easier to paint the eye the colour you want the iris, then paint the white in from the corners. You can take it slow, making sure you get it centred properly, rather than risk getting a derpy-looking eye because your dot of paint was off centre.

Well here is the update I promised. The first Tactical Squad of Second Company is painted. It is still awaiting the final basing, weathering and decals. These have to wait till I have all the required materials to do these things.
I hope to get them this week. Which will consist of some more basing materials, micro sol and set and some more knowledge of weathering and some more weathering products.

Well here is a little update on the work so far. I've been working on my Captain. I gave him a powerfist and storm bolter. Biggest reason for chossing these options is because I like the look of them.
I converted one shoulder pad a little, made the base and started working on the backpack too. The cape he gets will be black and I'm thinking about his head. Do I want him to have a helmet or not.

So here is a W.I.P. picture. I hope to finish him this evening.

For a dusty effect I apply the powder dry. I just rub it on with an old brush. Then I aply a coat of varnish to set it. First dark earth and then dry mud at the bottem.
