Subject: [2000] - Tyranids, New formations!
|

Elite Tyranid Warrior

I'm returning to the hobby after a long hiatus, and I thought I'd make a semi-competitive 'dream list' to shoot for, using the new models and formations. I'm a little unclear on some rules still, though. In particular, is there a limit to the number of formations I can take in a given army list?
HQ
Hive tyrant - Wings/dakka/egrub 240
Hypertoxic Node 560
-Hive tyrant - Wings/miasma/lwbs/ts/egrub
-Toxicrene
-Venomthrope
-Venomthrope
-Venomthrope
ELITE
-2 zoanthrope, 1 neurothrope 175
TROOPS
Sporefield 135
-2 mucolid spores
-2 mucolid spores
-2 mucolid spores
-3 spore mines
-3 spore mines
-3 spore mines
20 termagaunts 80
20 termagaunts 80
HEAVY SUPPORT
Dakkafex 150
Dakkafex 150
Living Artillery Node 400
-3 Biovores
-Exocrine
-3 Warrior brood, 2x deathspitter, 1 barbed strangler
OTHER
2x Tyrannocyte 150
TOTAL: 2020
So, obviously I'm 20 points over the target there, so any suggestions on where to shave that off are welcome. I am a big fan of the toxicrene, so I'd like to keep that in the list, though I realize it isn't the most competitive option. The list suffers from a lack of effective AT, so suggestions on that front are appreciated as well. I've considered replacing one or both fexen with ag/cc loadouts for tank hunting. I included the termagants because I want to avoid having a very low model count - I've noticed a lot of lists lately that are basically just 5-6 tmcs and a few spores, but I've always enjoyed the swarm fluff.
Let me know what you think!

Let me know what you think! Thorax Hive with Haywire bugs is one of our few dependable solutions.... But Carnifexen do quite well, If you can get a charge off, that D3 HOW does a lot. Formations by RAW are "feel free" Most any Tourney is going to limit you to One. So if you like Toxicrene, I'd build a list that keeps the Toxic Node. I think that the Tyrant inside that formation must take Toxin sack, I don't know if Miasma does enogh to justify the cost though... If this is a "purchase plan" then take a hard look at getting a third Tyrant. This is just a goofy idea for the Toxic Tyrant: Winged Tyrant: Thorax Hive, Toxic, Maw Claws...230 Scything Talons give an extra CC attack, Devourers give 6 S 6 shots...lots of options...

I'd dump the mysima and lw/bs and just go dakka/ts egrubs on your 2nd Flyrant. That give you exactly 20 pts back so your 2000 an the button :-)

The problem I have with running the hypertoxic flyrant as a dakka is that it kind of defeats the purpose of the formation. Your tyrant won't benefit from poison with Dev shots or egrubs, and doesn't generally want to be in cc. All you really gain is slightly better Id and toxic miasma on the crene.
This doesn't mean I'm opposed to a second dakka flyrant, but I think I would prefer to drop the venoms as well, in favor of a malanthrope. I would lose the formation, but I like the malanthrope a lot, and I'd have a few points left over to play with.

Yeah that is why I was thinking Mawclaws might actually make sense... PE, and Instant death (from Toxin Sack) for only 20 points total. Heck it Might even make sense to use Dessicator bugs, because you get instant death as well don't you? But I think I'd still want Electro, so you can harm AV...
If Scything Talons are free...I think Tyrant, Wings, Toxic, Mawclaws, Thorax Hive, Scything should run 230. That is a reasonable price for a Tyrant. I think you'd want to manetize though, or proxy for a few games, just in case...
