Hi all, I have successfully negociated with the maker of this: http://www.geenemodels.com/dragon-kit/

Just mention my name "Andrew Marshall" to score it for $280 USD, better then their 390 and half off GWs price for an inferior mould

3 pounds in weight. No other dimensions given unfortunately. But he does seem to be fairly sizeable.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

I think the four limbed dragons only work under a certain size. They are ok scaled for Skyrim, but for dragons of Smaug's size I like seperate front legs and wings.

No dimensions given, but he is pictured laid out in pieces on a cutting mat with a scale grid.

Nice dragon, and certainly better than GW's price for Smaug. Sadly, I don't know where I'd possibly find the space for something like that, but good on you for sourcing the deal for those who do.

Certainly a nice model, but cheaper doesn't equal better as far as I'm concerned. (edit: That being said more expensive doesn't equal better either lol looking at you WETA)

Still, cool dragon.

If the shots with the cutting mat are any indication then it's wing span looks to be just shy of 50cm and length might even be close to 70cm.

Oh wow, that just might push me over the edge, lol. So how does this work, I already sent them an e-mail to ask about it but do we have to contact them before ordering or what?

That is a great sculpt, if I had that kind of cash to drop on one model I'd take that over the GW Smaug any day!

Looks like a nightmare of gap-filling on those wings and jaw.

Yeah, but that was true with the GW model anyway. Huge gap where the wings fit onto the body on that one, too.

Can I ask how GW Smaug is a inferior mold? You haven't seen one in person yet I can only assume as no one outside of GW staff has that I am aware of. Frankly the jaw and wing gaps are pretty big so how is this for sure a better mold?

Yup. I'm not liking the look of Smaug from the film. I just can't get over the way Jackson turned him into a wyvern. Yet another geek-strike against the franchise. After loving Fellowship of the Ring back in the day, I just can't get over how my enjoyment of each film has declined to the extent that BoFA is the film I least want to see of 2014. Talk about murdering your darlings...

Pretty sure Smaug in the movie is exactly as described by Tolkien......but I could be wrong. If I'm not your blame needs to be aimed at Tolkien.

What....?

Why are we blaming Tolkien? Also, pretty sure the Smaug in the movie is about 2 or 3 times as big as what it's described in the book. That's the main complaint I've been hearing about it. (Haven't seen the movie myself, just so we're clear.)

We know exactly what Tolkien imagined Smaug to look like because the man made his own illustration. You will note that it looks nothing like the movie Smaug...with the exception that both dragons are some shade of red.

Nerdraging over whether the number of limbs puts something in seperate lead-lined guarded boxes with 'dragon' or 'wyvern' labels is like arguing that... Hmm... Let's see...

Like arguing that Space Wolves and Blood Angels and Ultramarines etc. etc. etc. are all like totally different you guys and need individual codexes and they're not just Space Marians in different crayola shades.

And anyways, if it doesn't have a venomous tail stinger, it's not a wyvern.

I'm sooo, sooo sorry.

I got mine back in the day along with the Black Dragon for a total of $75 CAD. Been chuckling at this whole Smaug thing, not that any of these are really usable on the table top outside a pretty specific sscenario.

I don't like the way the wings connect all the way along the body of this model... it also seems a little thin / scrawny body-wise.

I love the head and neck of the dragon, though!

That just means it would actually have a chance of flying.

Not really; but it looks like it could, which is the point. Leather/skin membrane wings along the body are the norm in real life nature (in fact this model could be said to have not enough attachment, along the legs...), and Smaug is described as a 'worm' in the book (not that he's an oversized earthworm, but it suggests a vaguely serpentine shape) and has always been depicted, as far as I know, as long and thin. Including by Tolkien himself. It also presents a lot less bulk which, as I say above, probably wouldn't help a real creature of that size and shape to fly, but at least helps it to look the part.

Because if it's not "usable" on the table top it's not worth getting at all?

Nothing wrong with having something to paint and put on display last I checked. Certainly not worth chuckling about.

So Smaug is a fox? The face looks like a fox head to me. I rather love PJ's version over this. Then again, I am sure Tolkien would have changed how the dragon looked if he had the technology to do so. Back then what the 40's? the artists were not that life like especially when it came too books. That is why this looks cartoonish.

So should we be taking Tolkien's work as cartoonish characters then?

No, I was chuckling because for $75 CAD a decade ago I bought a giant (ok colossal, hehe) red dragon and got a large black one for free. Even today they go for ~$300 on ebay and that's still %60 of what GW are trying to charge for Smaug. If I had wanted to repaint them I could have but I've got enough of a project line as it is.
