Behind you

Is what it says been thinking about a board for a long time what would you put on yours?
My ideas for the board I will build in summer:
Isstvan v or possibly terra or other world
Virus bombed skeletons flesh melting off.
Big 3'by3' fortress large bunkers kill zones aa guns some cannons not much void shield generators.
Zone mortalis below with craters which led down into.

What would you have on your dream board?

I would love a jungle or woodland board with caverns underneath it. I don't know how it would work but it would be awesome (in my head at least).

Hum if you had the tree top canopy detachable so you could get at the models and the whole board on runners so you could slide apart the 2' by2' sections apart to get at the caves.

One of the Apocalypse books had a two-level table. A designated spot on Table A led to a designated section of Table B nearby that served as the underground. There was a Table C as well but that's just for extra. I think there was a Military Base Interior, Exterior and Caves all in one game. Three Tables for it.

But for me, something Cityfight with actual Districts and streets, including a Landing Pad and some sort of foresty park...

Man I so want to build this now. I play Wood Elves and Beastmen (well am planning to) so it would be perfect. Denseish trees with some clearings, removable canopy so you can actually play, and then the top slides open and underneath there's a zone mortalis esque cave system, all twisted and tight corridors...

Now I need to think of an equally epic scifi board. It's only fair.

I've got some blue prints for a desert canyon I've been planning for some time. Full of cliffs and tunnels and can't forget rope bridges. But I'd also love a multi level city board where the under side is the sewer system.

Multi level ruinied city, sewers, bridges, tunnels so you can have brutal close qauters fights below, tank battles above and in the ruins sniper duels and assault troops jumping from building to building.

And modular panels so the terrain can be changed, and refitted for different scenarios and densities

It's doable without purchasing Zone Mortalis. Take a look at The Relentless Despair created by some friends of mine for an event they hosted in Santa Cruz, CA.

I have a plan to make a 6' x 12' board of Bow Interchange in East London.

It is a moderate size two-lane roundabout, with three-lane flyover and a four-lane flyunder. In other words, a roundabout with a bridge over it and a tunnel under it.

There is then a nearby small church, canals, tower blocks. I'll also include some industrial stuff from nearby.

Trouble is, I need a bigger house!

Though guards may sleep and ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.

That would be awesome. The way to do it would be to model the surface, with access points to the caves below. Then do the caves using cardboard tiles using pieces like Advanced HeroQuest tiles

Or Space Hulk, if they are high tech caves!

One time, we played a giant 8x8 table with 40k rules on tons of Space Hulk tiles (infantry pieces only). it was actually kind of fun... ish

Actually i might have to take it back.

The actual Dream table (one iv actaully dreamed about) was a necron tomb world made out of black/green polished granite and jade stone with gold/brass inlays. on a 6x4 table.

I think that would of been a cool thing to make if i was in the stone industry.

Yeah, no kidding.

One of the problems with 1/60th scale (which is about what 28mm is), is that everything is rather large, still. Especially for a game of 40k. It's easy to forget that the table is the size of a football field/pitch. You'd be surprised just how small that is when you try to recreate real life on top of it.

A few years ago I lived in a tiny house, not much bigger than a spacious one-room apartment (or a very spacious garage), and I went out with a tape measure to see how large it would be at-scale. It wound up being something like 16" x 9" once you added in a bit of padding for the base. My tiny dump of a house was larger than most 40k terrain I've seen.

That really changed the way I looked at 40k tables.

Anyways, on-topic, I guess I'd have to agree with the cityscape thing. Which is good, because that's the kind of terrain I'm building, I suppose. I don't know if I'd go so far as tunnels, but I really like the idea of terrain that's big and complicated enough that you can have a firefight inside of a single piece of terrain, rather than terrain always being what is between the two sides.

See, the issue I've had is scaling as well. When I'm making mock-ups of stuff in my head, I always have to remember to keep everything the right size relative to the troops, and also keep things open enough to facilitate firefights

Frankly? One with no hills, only plateaus and steps with abrupt but level height changes.

Trying to get things to stay still on slopes is more infuriating than the added realism is worth. Realm of battle is pretty, but impractical.

Now beyond that... Yes, one edge of the table being a colossal entranceway to my Tomb world would be awesome. Smaller buildings, chasms and plateaus, the ruins of an imperial or Xenos settlement the tomb complex erupted from beneath as it rose, maybe an abandoned Mechanicus camp...
