Assault heavy Daemons. Lots of Hounds and Daemonettes with some big stompy Daemons and Slaanesh Soulgrinders.

Lots of interesting variation for painting and modeling and the playstyle couldn't differ more from your Tau.

Tyranids.

Pretty much the exact opposite of what you run at the moment.

Tau - OP gunline mech list

Tyranids - Beastly in-your-face gribblies with claws and teeth grawrwrwr

Don't play Dark Eldar. Coming from playing Tau. I would go Demons. Tons of fun models to paint.

Eldar/Dark Eldar allies. Or more specifically, Corsairs and Wych Cults. Gives you Reavers, Raiders and Venoms, some less optimal Wyches and Hellions alongside the War Walker heavy Corsair for a more agressive style of gameplay. Would build on what you know as a Tau player more than a hard reset with somthing completely different.

What are you looking for in an army? Something the same as tau, or different? Why do you like DE? What's stopping you from going in that direction?

A bit more information would be helpful. Otherwise you're more or less just asking what armies everybody has.

What do you like? I would go with the one you like the lore best. Other than that, SM are fun, Tyranids are good, and Orkz are Orky.

well i like the models of the DE but im not sure how to play them well, even before tau got the new codex i would wreck them when ever i came up against them. I guess thats another reason i like a challenge. Everyone in my local group said tau were garbage when i started playing so i bought them because i liked the models and wanted to prove them wrong i guess, and i get the same feeling about the dark eldar. Im leanin towards them and tyranids, ive played with a friends nids before and had fun so they arent completely foreign to me. And i guess my third choiceqould be DKoK cause i love the lore and the books about them, its just so hard to get those models. I have played a wave serpent heavy iyanden wraith list and didnt really have fun tabling people and losing friends so eldar are a no go, and ive also done GK before and just lost interest in them. I guess necrons could be cool with the new codex on the horizion i kinda want to wait and see on that i guess. Those are my thoughts if that helps. Oh and there are already a bunch of marine players in my local gaming group so im not really interested in DA,BA,SW or the like.

Well, if what you want to play is an underdog, things are going to be difficult for you in the long term. Just like how people pick the strongest army they can and find out that by the time they've got their army assembled and painted, it's gone from hot to not, you have the same problem, but in reverse. GW is making the codices more similar in power level of late, so it might be the case in the future where this kind of a goal isn't even really attainable.

I think what you're looking for most, then, is an army that has a lot of different ways it can be run, so as the tides change there will always be something in your codex that is sufficiently mediocre while also not being only terrible.

What you want, then, is something that doesn't just have a niche, and then you're at the mercy of if that niche is good at the moment or not. What you want, then, is an older, more established army. Something that has several codices under its belt by now. Something fleshed out more completely.

Which, with the exception of orks, means not xenos. As you've no doubt seen with tau, they're kind of gimmicky, and eldar has never had a codex that wasn't really wonky while dark eldar have been doing little more than skimmer spam for some time now. Likewise, tyranid and necron codices over the years tend to have a one-trick nature to them. If you like the way they work, then play them, but it sounds like you're looking for something more durable with more options.

The two best codices I'd chose for this are vanilla space marines and guard. SM has units that are more similar to each other, but everything can be upgraded in any way, and their units are all pretty versatile. With the exception of centurion shenanigans (remembering that centurions are a brand new unit for SM), I don't think I've ever heard someone complaining about SM being cheezy. They sort of can't be.

Guard work a little bit differently in that they also can be upgraded with a lot of stuff in a lot of different ways (there are over a hundred ways to set up a russ, ignoring the extra wargear like stubbers). What's different, though, is that their units are both weaker (durability-wise), and the special rules tend to be spread around, which means you need to keep things interwoven more. A tac squad in a drop pod is a one-unit army, while guard infantry need to have their priest and a nearby officer to give them orders, and the chimeras benefit greatly by mixing with battle tanks, etc.

Behind this, your best bet would be either orks or CSM. Orks because they have a bunch of different kinds of units, but sort of wind up all taking the same upgrades, or CSM who have very different kinds of units that are sort of nich-ey in their close combat bent.

With the exception of a leafblower for guard, you could do any of those four armies and be able to more accurately pick your power level from a diversity of units.

Personally, I've played guard for over 200 games, and I haven't gotten bored with them yet. And that's saying something, for me.
