I've been waiting for this for ages. At 100pts, X-wing is an amazing game for a tournament setting, but "Epic" always feels like I envisioned Star Wars battles in a miniatures game. This baby-Star Destroyer will go a long way toward making that option even better!

Also, the Tie-Advanced cards look to massively improve the ship, with its title-card looking out-right incredible (Cost zero, and makes one upgrade card cost -4 squad points)

Well, the model looks nice, but the lore is kinda goofy... I mean, they already have an Imerial ship dedicated to anti-starfighter weaponry in the SW lore... it's called the Lancer-class.

Looks like a Star destroyer banged a Tie Interceptor and this was the result.

Meh.

Though I haven't got any of the other hueg ships either, so I guess it's just not my thing for a dogfighting game.

I love it, and it's design. Most 'canon' Imperial out scale Xwing. And calling its lore goofy, is silly. Its supposed to be a massive universe, and besides, EU is scrapped any way.

There is a word for a wargamer with an empty paint bench.

Dead.

I think having a small number (IE, one per side) of "huge" ship, just really highlights the scale of said dog-fights, and makes them a little more fun. Great thing about this game though is that it really works at 300pts as one kind of experience, but just as well in a totally different way at the excellent 100pt tournament level.

From the announcement...

Before we even announced the Tantive IV™ Expansion Pack, we knew Imperial players would need a comparable ship to lead their fleets in the game’s Epic Play battles. But none of the ships within the established IP and extended universe quite fit the bill. As we looked at ships that were larger than the VT-49 Decimator, the next possibility was the Lancer-class frigate at 250m; however, that was larger than we wanted for the scope of the game. Moreover, it didn’t quite fit the desired role, so we worked with Lucasfilm Ltd. and drew upon existing materials to create a new starship that fit seamlessly into the aesthetics and background of the Star Wars universe.

I feel they took that far too literally. The psuedo wing-lets on the side look really silly. They at least make sense on the little ships in terms of surface area for solar energy collection, but they add nothing to the big ship I feel. Especially since the forward parts of the ship and especially the prow look REALLY bare.

Let's be honest here, the lancer class looks like garbage straight out of the EU.

I'd rather them keep making good looking ships than rely so heavily on stuff designed on a budget for comics and books. Nostalgia only goes so far.

I wish they had even gone and redesigned the HWK while they were at it.

Yeah, I love the idea of the lancer class, but the appearance of this new ship is better (to me).

Those new TIE Advanced cards look really handy, wish I had a way to get them without buying a massive paperweight, as the big ships font do anything for me personally. Decimators are as big as I'm willing to get in X Wing

WTF?

The Lancer was the perfect Imperial craft. I don't understand why they had to invent a new one.

Cause the Lancer is visually hideous and would be out of game scale. I don't have any large ships personally but this is one I'd consider.

The big ships are already out of scale and brought down, so that isn't really an issue for the Lancer. Your first comment is subjective.

Well, for one thing at 250 meters long it was entirely too big, taking into account that the CR90 (150m) needed to be rescaled already.

Also, it's not like it was the only anti-starship capital ship in Imperial service either, see the Tartan corvette (which was also too big, alas).

This new ship will probably look more Imperial to all X-Wing players not too into EU stuff, too, which must be a big plus for FFG. IMO it looks kind of cool, although it also looks like the results of a TIE interceptor-Star Destroyer copulation...

I'm thinking that a Tie Advanced with sensor jammer must be one of the toughest fighters in the game now.

Subjective, sure. Everything like this is subjective. But nostalgia can influence a person's subjective opinion a bit too much.

Go take a real hard look at the lancer and you honestly tell me that it couldn't use a redesign.

The E-Wing is another piece of garbage that I wish they had redesigned. We've put up with a lot of crappy stuff in the SW extended universe because there was no other option. Now we've got major companies with good artists back at it.

I personally quite like the look of this "new" ship - looks fast and aggressive to me, and indisputably follows the Imperial design aesthetic.

I was wondering what the fuss about this "Lancer" thing was, so I looked it up...

To me it looks like something that might have been used as a toy or "aid" during the afore-mentioned copulation...you know, to help the Star Destroyer "get there"...

The TIE X-1 Title looks pretty cool. Doing a quick bit of Math:

Tempest, Title, Enhanced Scopes- 18pt, same as a cheap interceptor. Trade off being less speed and power for more armour, a missile slot, and the ability to block PS1 ships.

Marek is 28pt, and Vader is 30pt, with Title and advanced Targeting computer, before other upgrades. I'd imagine that Predator would be a good choice, as it frees them up to spend actions on target locks (and Vader, with Autocrit, re-roll, and focus will be very reliable at getting 3 hits). They would then weigh in at 31 and 33 points respectively.

Hopefully, you will get at least two copies of the title in the box, or else I still don't see the advanced seeing much play.

Yep, I wasn't going to mention that, but yes, the lancer looks pretty damn phallic.

It also doesn't look anything Imperial. Sure, in the big EU lore, the Empire used anything they could get their hands on, but they are most known for the iconic triangle starship design. I think that iconic design is more important than a bunch of random books and comics, most of which were crap, but only a few were great enough to keep.

The lancer was not one of those things to keep.

Also, I've already decided, and am currently just printing up spare cards, even ones that I don't yet own from packs I don't want. I still plan to keep buying the good stuff I like, but they're not going to try and make me buy stuff just to get a few random cards meant to balance out something that should have been balanced in the first place.

No, different scale, different quality. The FFG stuff I think might be better.

I just dislike how they CONSTANTLY double down on the wedge shaped ships. yes. The star destroy is iconic. But jesus, every imperial ship in the universe doesn't need to be a pizza slice.

I like that aesthetic. It ties the Imperial ships to an overall look, like cars from the same company.

It makes the Rebels look suitably rag-tag in comparison.

I am hoping they incorporate some of the Clone Wars ship ideas into the game as Scum, maybe salvaged stuff reconditioned.

Somewhere in south-central England.

The shuttle isn't a pizza slice.

The production design aesthetic of the films is that the rebels are a rag tag and bobtail fleet that uses any ships they can get their hands on. The Imperials OTOH are an organised military force with a design bureau, shipyards, etc, turning out a developing series of ships with strong design similarities.

This is reflected in the evolution of the TIE fighter into Advanced TIE, TIE bomber, and so on.

Vader is going to be quite scary again. I'm thinking an engine upgrade and the advanced targeting will make him a good duelist.

Scale for smaller ships is 1:270, bigger ones are slightly scaled down, but only to a degree where it does not look strange. The Lancer would look really strange with the bays being less than half the size of a Shuttle.
