Hey everybody I haven't posted or played a game of 40k in about a year and I decided to get back into it. Its an addiction I tell you

Anyhow when I used to play, one of my many armies was tyranids and I just didn't enjoy them at all. This was mostly due to the fact that I hated the paint scheme I was trying to do and that 99% of my army was about 50 genestealers and gaunts, and I'm not a fan of hordes.

However now I really feel like getting back into them and trying again from a different angle (bigger bugs) and a better paint scheme.

I know they've been nerfed quite a bit but what are some good units to start with?

I really love tyranid warriors though theyre prone to instadeath and would love to include tervigons, hive guard, trygons, fliers and things like that in the army

Any support with what units to buy/lists that are good for 7th would be welcome!

Get the Tyranid Swarm and Wrath of the Hive Mind boxes as a starter, then just buy other stuff you like like zoanthropes, venomthropes or whatever (that's what I am doing with my 'Nids).

The nerf is gone thanks to Formations. But, it depends how competitive or how spammy you want to be. You can make a good list using two Carnifex (2x Twin Linked Devourers), two Flyrants (wings, 2x Twin linked Devs, e-shock grubs), two Zoanthropes, Living Artillary Node (Biovore, exocrine, warrior formation) and fill out the rest of the points in any way you see fit like nearly every other Nid list in existence. 30 Termagants (you'd need more models than that though) and the Tervigon as troops for example with a Mawloc or Trygon. Or, spam it up with five Flyrants using the Leviathan Detachment and a CAD. But, these choices are popular because they work. I've been seeing less and less Gaunts as we get new Formations, and haven't seen genestealers in ages. Much to my unhappiness...

Yeah, 'Nids are pretty competitive now.

The Wrath of the Hive Mind box is what i'd get. A Tyrant. a Tervigon, and some Gants is a solid start to an army. Get some more Gants to field the Tervigon as a troop. Then think about what else you'd like in your army. Getting two Tyrants are pretty high priority if you play with a tough crowd. In general though, for casual games, you will have fun playing a variety of builds with the Tyranid book that doesn't require spamming Tyrants.

If you want to go "Nidzilla" you should think about 1 or 2 Tyrannocytes, being able to DS makes a lot of the CC big bugs much more powerful.

Like a few others, I'd recommend starting with the wrath of the hive mind box, if you can.

Between that box and the swarm box, you should be pretty well set for your small bugs and then you can just focus on big bugs. It's up to you what you want to build out of the box...

I would also recommend you snag a copy of Shield of Baal: Leviathan. You should be able to find a softcopy or the electronic copy. There you'll find the other FOC you can run for 'nids, (the rest of the rules for the new models..which you can also get for free at black library), the other list of warlord traits, and a bunch of other formations.

You may want to see if you can grab or find somebody to split a deathstorm box before they're gone. I'll let somebody else weigh in on what they think of the specific formations and stuff from the deathstorm box (I haven't paid that much attention to the formations themselves..I've been busy), but there is a unique brood lord model..and you do get 5 genestealers, the aforementioned broodlord, a carnifex and a warrior brood (which includes the ability to make the 'nid prime).

Leviathan Rising - the collection on black library (advent calender collection) is going to have all the other formations in it that's out there, except for stuff from forge world.

This, or the Hypertoxic Node from the Baal supplement. A (third) Tyrant (add wings), a buffed Toxicrene and three Venomthropes. You were going to take Tyrants anyway, the Toxicrene is a great monster to have around (especially with the buffs the formation gives it) and Venomthropes are really important (giving your monsters Shrouded lets you shrug off that anti-tank firepower).

Tyranids have plenty of great monsters to field now. The only ones I would really steer clear of for the moment are the Haruspex (shame, awesome model but a little too weak for its price tag) and the Maleceptor (simply awful for its price tag!) and to some extent the Trygons (like the Haruspex, a little too pricey for what they bring, and they have really lost their anti-vehicle punch).

If you want to skip over small creatures altogether this is now possible thanks to our new15 point Troops choice the Mucolid Spore. For a mere 30 points you can get your compulsory Troops out of the way, and get on with having a great time with nothing but monsters (and having a few Mucolids lurking with your monsters isn't even a bad move; they provide great anti-flyer abilities...).

Yeah the hypertoxic node sounds like an awesome formation that i'm definitely going to try and build. That 2+ poison on the Toxicrene is wicked I'm going to try and see what I can find on ebay at first but the new tyranid hive swarm and wrath of the hive mind boxes do look like great deals (for GW anyway haha) thanks for the advice guys
