In 750 or 1000 point games, how much AV killers do you take? Is 1 broadside too few? Should I bring more? How much more?

I usually bring one specialized unit for AV. Obviously it's vague, but for around 750 I try to spend about 150 or so points, for 1000 maybe 200-250.

depends on what I'm running and how you define AV. as well as what I'm likely facing.

in a low point game the odds of running into say.. a land raider, are slim, but a dreadnought? much more likely.

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

This.

I feel like a dread would be really good, since it can actually serve as a medium between full armor and heavy infantry

Bringing a land raider to a low point game is just mean. I would say in a low point game bring at least two things that can beat AV 11

On moon miranda.

I usually expect to see at least 1 vehicle per 300 or 400pts, against some armies, like IG, possibly double that.

One must always be prepared to deal with multiple medium armor threats (e.g. wave serpents) and a high AV threat (a Land Raider or potentially 2 Leman Russ tanks).

There's always the "Leman Russ, wat do?" test for a list,. Can you respond to an AV14 battle tank slugging heavy weapons fire from across the board? That's an often missed gap in low points games, armies may bring meltas but nothing with long range or no DS deployment.

The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.

My SoB never leave home without a few meltaguns. My last 750 point list had two troops with Hflamer/melta and an outflanking Dominion squad (2 meltas) in a TL Multi-Melta Immolator, for example. So that's 4 meltaguns and a TL MM. And everyone has krak grenades ofc.

I also took the last hull point off an enemy dread by ramming it with a Rhino...

I play Iyanden, so it'd basically everything has AV by default. Have to work with the opposite problem of how much anti-infantry to shove in.

Either way you shouldn't need much, maybe 1 dedicated squad at ~1k.

Actually low-point games are the best time to bring a Land Raider, since people don't usually expect it and will often skip anti-tank in favor of anti-infantry units. So you can create a situation where your LR/LRBT squadron/etc get to drive around the table killing stuff without ever worrying about return fire, and that tends to win games.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Well for example one of my biggest opponents is orks. Not a whole lot of vehicles that they run at low games next to trukks.

Guard on the other hand, I don't know what to expect. Some people take blobs, some people take lots of tanks.

The other ones I play is space marines, which has rhinos out the wazoo half the time.

Between

At 500 points, I usually bring five melta guns.

At 1000 points, I usually have at least one Exorcist and two Dominion squads, which is usually more than enough melta to sink a Black Templar crusader list.

Two sources. Lascannon/Missile Dreadnaught and Lascannon Razorback, or a Flyrant and a Carnifex with Devourers, or a Bright Lance Guardian squad and a Falcon. Then at 1000 I typically have three sources.
