So, I an odd idea.

Ever since I started 40k (which was a long while ago now), I've always been fascinated by character duels, particularly between named heroes. Something about two generals going blade to blade while their armies fight and die around them struck me as, while not terribly realistic, still quite cool. It is because of that I've been thinking of , last year, out of some weird obsessive-compulsive impulse and sheer curiosity, I drew up an alphabetical list of all special characters in 40k (with some exceptions), and had them fight it out one on one in an elimination-style system. I did the same thing at the middle of this year as well.

In the first arena, it came down to Ghazghkull vs Skarbrand (Abaddon, and the old school versions of Uraka and Mamon, were the semifinalists), and while Ghaz got some good initial hits in, the Bloodthirster tore him to pieces once his Waaagh save vanished. In the second arena, it came down to Lysander vs O'Vesa (Asurmen, Ku'gath and the Swarmlord were semifinalists), with O'vesa ultimately winning after a grueling battle of attrition.

Anyway, this year, I decided that I would post each successive round here on Dakka for you commentators. The rules for each fight are as follows:

-Characters start 12' away on a 24" horizontal plain-- they may only move towards or away from one another
-Roll offs to go first and seizing the initiative are as normal
-Warlord traits and psychic powers are in effect, though there are no alternative means of deployment (ie no deepstriking or infiltration)
-For the sake of relevant rules, all characters count as being in a challenge once they fight, and automatically pass all break tests
-Flying monstrous creatures MAY NOT FLY.
-Vehicle based special characters (ie Bjorn, Pask, any of the Necron characters on CCBs) are not allowed.
-Primarchs and the Forge World Greater Daemons (ie Ann'grath) are also not allowed.
-Otherwise, Forge World characters are allowed

In addition, while most fights will be done alphabetically, I will do some initial fights based on fluff, between characters who have either fought one another previously, or whose armies have clashed. So far I have drawn up:

-Marneus Calgar vs the Swarmlord
-Torias Telion vs Old One Eye (I think Telion encountered the Carnifex in a novel or something)
-Yarrick vs Ghazghkull
-Alexis Polux vs Erasmus Golg
-Kor'sarro Khan vs Vargard Obyron
-Vulkan He'stan vs Trazyn the Infinite (didn't their armies fight once?)
-Abaddon the Despoiler vs the Sanguinor
-Huron Blackheart vs Zhrukal Androcles (the guy who once melta'd Huron to near-death)
-Azrael vs Kharn (didn't they encounter one another in the Pandorax campaign?)
-Helbrecht vs Imotekh
-Asterion Moloch vs Kutlakh the World-Killer
-Castellan Crowe vs Skulltaker
-Drazhar vs Karandras

Please mention any other noteworthy match-ups you guys can think of.

Any thoughts on this? More importantly, are people interested in me posting this, or do people think this is just going to be a colossal waste of time?

Well looking without Mathhammer 40k, because I'm REALLY lazy, I couldn't guess. I'm sure Torias is going to die though in that matchup. The Helbrecht vs. The Stormlord intrigues me though, as neither can penetrate the other's armor, and the Stormlord is most likely able to go first, which means he'll probably get the charge, whilst the other gets Rending in the ensuing challenge.

I kind of want to see how Draigo would do in this.

Also, what abilities are you giving to psykers? I can see a lot of battles ending almost instantly if someone gets off a good psychic shriek.

I don't see new 7th Ed. Dante anywhere. I do see the Sanguinor in a horrible mismatch though.

Can't think of very many characters in 40k who are old enough to have a rivalry with Dante though.

Draigo murderizes anything not eternal warrior. He's only a fraction of a wound per turn behind abbaddon, right along the typical bike chapter master, so they all are basically on par as the killiest characters. Hes also as durable as just about anything in the game.

I am the Hammer. I am the right hand of my Emperor. I am the tip of His spear, I am the gauntlet about His fist. I am the woes of daemonkind. I am the Hammer.

I thought his sword was only AP3 though, no? Has this been updated with the new codex?

AP2 now, so he is one of the toughest characters in the game now.

Just saw his stats, and he is pretty beastly!

I think Abaddon's Drach'nyen would take him down though. Not with ease, but Draigo is definitely geared moreso towards Daemon-slaying than anything else.

Abaddon has one more attack stock outside the Daemon weapon getting bonus rolls, but that can not only backfire, Draigo wounds him with more ease and is more durable. I'm interested in Mathhamer 40k for that though.

Just as a heads up, I rolled a bunch of preliminary fights recently, but then lost the file they were all saved on. Expect some actual results shortly after I reroll some of the duels.

Another character I'm not seeing in a fair duel is Castellan Crowe

Any Daemon vs GK fight is already one-sided, yet alone when it's Crowe

One I would like to see is Crowe vs Abaddon

Alright, as promised, here's the first batch of fights:

GHAZGHKULL THRAKA VS COMMISSAR YARRICK
-Ghazghkull advances 4", shoots for no damage, calls Waaagh and charges-- falls short, even with Ere We Go!
-Yarrick advances, shoots for no damage, charges-- takes 1 wound on overwatch, saved; Yarrick does 1 unsaved wound for 1 back!
-Yarrick does 1 wound, saved by cybork body; Ghazghkull does 2 unsaved wounds back and fells Yarrick
-Yarrick gets back up; shoots for no damage, charges-- takes 1 hit from overwatch that fails to wound; Ghazghkull does 1 wound, saved; Yarrick does 2 unsaved wounds back!
-Yarrick fails to wound, Ghazghkull does 2 unsaved wounds back and crushes Yarrick
-Yarrick gets back up! Shoots for no damage, charges-- Ghazghkull does 2 wounds, both saved! Yarrick does 2 wounds back, 1 gets through cybork body-- Ghazghkull goes down!!!

WINNER: COMMISSAR YARRICK

Note: in the previous, lost fight, it went the other way-- Ghazghkull eventually won after Yarrick failed to get up, though that was after Yarrick had taken 3 of Ghaz's 4 wounds.

HELBRECHT VS IMOTEKH THE STORMLORD
-Helbrecht advances, fires combi-melta but does no damage; charges-- Gauntlet of Fire does no damage on overwatch, does 1 unsaved wound, Imotekh does no damage in return
-Both fail to hurt each other
-Both fail to hurt each other
-Both fail to hurt each other
-Both fail to hurt each other
-Both fail to hurt each other
-Both fail to hurt each other
-Helbrecht does no damage, Imotekh does 1 wound back
-Both fail to hurt each other
-Both fail to hurt each other
-Both fail to hurt each other
-Both fail to hurt each other
-Helbrecht does 1 wound for none back
-Both fail to hurt each other
-Both fail to hurt each other
-Helbrecht does no damage, Imotekh does 1 wound back
-Helbrecht does 1 wound for none back, felling Imotekh!
-Imotekh gets back up w. 2 wounds; fires Staff of the Destroyer, Helbrecht fails his save and dies!!!!!

WINNER: IMOTEKH THE STORMLORD

ABADDON THE DESPOILER VS THE SANGUINOR
-Sanguinor advances & charges-- Sanguinor does 2 wounds to Abaddon, who counter-attacks and does 2 wounds back
-Sanguinor does no damage, Abaddon does 1 wound back & finishes Sanguinor off

WINNER: ABADDON THE DESPOILER

3 wounds and no AP2 really hurts the Sanguinor, I think.

MARNEUS CALGAR VS THE SWARMLORD
-Swarmlord gets Dominion, Catalyst, The Horror and Paroxysm; Calgar gets The Imperium's Sword as his warlord trait
-Swarmlord advances; gains 6 dice to Calgar's 3; casts Paroxysm on Calgar, Calgar fails to deny and lose 2 WS and BS; Swarmlord then fails to cast Catalyst on self, but gives self Preferred Enemy; charges- Marneus twinlinks guns with Chapter Tactics, but fails to hit on overwatch
-Hammer of Wrath does nothing; Swarmlord hits and wounds all 5 times-- Calgar makes 5 saves!!!!! Calgar does 1 hit back, Swarmlord saves
-Swarmlord does 2 unsaved wounds, Calgar does no damage in return
-Swarmlord gains 7 dice to Calgar's 4; casts Paroxysm-- Calgar fails to deny and loses 3 WS; Swarmlord then casts Catalyst on self and gives self Preferred Enemy; Swarmlord does 2 unsaved wounds, slicing Calgar apart!

WINNER: THE SWARMLORD

Ouch! I knew that the odds were against Marneus, but I didn't expect the match to be so one-sided. Paroxysm made all the difference, I think, tilting the battle far in the Swarmlord's favour.

ASTERION MOLOCH VS KUTLAKH THE WORLD-KILLER
-Moloch advances, fires but does no damage; charges-- does 1 wound for none back
-Moloch is reduced to WS1; both fail to hurt each other
-Both fail to hurt each other
-Moloch does 1 wound for none back
-Moloch does no damage for 1 back
-Both fail to hurt each other
-Moloch is reduced to WS2; does no damage for 1 wound back
-Moloch does no damage for 1 back
-Both fail to hurt each other
-Moloch does 1 wound and fells Kutlakh
-Kutlakh gets back up w. 2 wounds! Fires at Moloc for no damage; charges-- both fail to hurt each other
-Moloch does no damage, Kutlakh does 1 wound back and kills him!

WINNER: KUTLAKH THE WORLD-KILLER

AZRAEL vs KHARN THE BETRAYER
-Azrael stands and shoots, does 2 wounds, Kharn saves both!
-Kharn advances, shoots 1 wound off of Azrael, charges-- takes 1 wound from overwatch! Kharn does 2 unsaved wounds, Azrael does 3 wounds back & kills Kharn!

WINNER: AZRAEL

ANRAKYR THE TRAVELER VS ILLIC NIGHTSPEAR
-Illic fires, fails to wound
-Anrakyr advances, fires but misses, charges-- Illic does 1 wound, Anrakyr does 1 wound back and squishes him

WINNER: ANRAKYR THE TRAVELER

TORIAS TELION VS OLD ONE EYE
-Old One Eye advances and charge-- Telion misses in overwatch and is then crushed by Hammer of Wrath. The end.

WINNER: OLD ONE EYE

KOR'SARRO KHAN VS OBRYON
-Obryon charges-- Khan does no damage, takes 1 wound back, hits and runs out of combat
-Khan shoots for no damage, charges-- Khan does no damage, Obryon does 3 unsaved wounds back and slaughters Khan!

WINNER: VARGARD OBRYON

CASTELLAN CROWE VS SKULLTAKER (on Juggernaut)
-Skulltaker advances and charges-- Hammer of Wrath does nothing; Skulltaker does 1 unsaved wound, Crowe does nothing back
-Crowe gains 7 dice to Skulltaker's 5; casts Banishment-- Skulltaker fails to deny and has his invul save reduced; casts Hammerhand on self; Skulltaker does 1 unsaved decapitating stike, claiming Crowe's skull for the Skull Throne!

WINNER: SKULLTAKER

Note: in the previous, now-lost fight, it was Crowe who got the charge on Skully. In that fight, Crowe's rerollable saves were on fire, and Skulltaker couldn't get a single wound in before he was banished back to the warp.

HURON BLACKHEART VS ZHRUKAL ANDROCLES
-Huron advances, randomly gains Molten Beam and 5 power dice; casts Molten Beam, but perils-- suffers Empyric Feedback, but passes test; Androcles is hit by Molten Beam, fails his save, and is vaporized! KARMIC REVENGE!

WINNER: HURON BLACKHEART

VULKAN HE'STAN VS TRAZYN THE INFINITE
-Vulkan advances, flames Trazyn for no damage, charges-- fails mindshackles & does 1 wound to self, Trazyn does no damage
-Vulkan fails mindshackles again, fails 2 saves and dies!!!!

WINNER: TRAZYN THE INFINITE

That's it so far. I'll roll up more fights in case people are interested.

I actually forgot about Hammer of Wrath on Old One Eye. Negates a bit of the problems I2 brings him and Carnis like him. Though, it does lead to a boring brawl when he just slams through things like a freight train and doesn't bother cleaning off his hooves.

Can we do Lilith Vs Jain Zar or something? The two fastest Eldar around going toe to toe should make for a great battle. Make sure you have Lilith challenge Jain so she gets re-rolls to hit'n'wound.

Sorry for the delay, ladies and gentlemen, it's been a busy holiday and post-holiday, fraught with outbreaks of illness, getting snowed in, and inexplicably getting hired. That being said, here's some more fights for you.

Krom Dragongaze vs Grukk Face-rippa
-Grukk advances, fires kombi-rokkit but misses; charges-- barely makes it thanks to Ere We Go! Krom inflicts 4 wounds on Grukk, who only saves one! Grukk swings back, and inflicts 1 unsaved wound, ripping Krom's face off! BOTH GO DOWN!
REMATCH:
-Krom advances, fires but does no damage, and charges-- Krom inflicts 3 unsaved wounds, Grukk does 2 unsaved wounds back! Both go down again!
REMATCH (AGAIN):
-Krom seizes the initiative and advances, fires for no damage, charges-- falls short!
-Grukk advances, shoots and misses, then charges-- inflicts 4 wounds on Grukk, 2 saved! Grukk swings back, doing 2 wounds to Krom-- both saved!
-Krom does 2 unsaved wounds to Grukk, who does 2 unsaved wounds back-- both kill each other AGAIN!
REMATCH:
-Grukk advances, shoots, and misses; charges, but falls short even with Ere We Go!
-Krom advances, shoots for no damage, charges-- does 4 unsaved wounds, 2 saved! Grukk does 2 wounds back-- Krom fails 1 save and goes down!

WINNER: DRAZHAR

Alexis Polux vs Erasmus Golg (from the Horus Heresy)
-Polux advances, fires his combi melta-- Golg fails his invulnerable save and goes sputch. Well, that was anticlimactic.

WINNER: ALEXIS POLUX

(but just to see what would have happened if they'd made it into close combat
-Polux charges, uses Hammer Blow to swing at initiative-- misses, even with rerolls from Imperial Fist rules! Golg swings back, does 2 unsaved wounds and crushes Polux!

Armillus Dynat vs Kyr Vhalen
-Dynat advances, throws phosphex bomb but scatters off target; charges-- Vhalen inflicts 2 wounds, both failed! Servo-arm misses, Dynat swings back with hammer and inflicts 1 unsaved wound, insta-gibbing Vhalen

WINNER: ARMILLUS DYNAT

JAIN ZAR VS LELITH HESPERAX
-Jain Zar seizes the initiative and advances, throws the Silent Death & scores 1 unsaved wound on Lelith; charges-- Jain Zar swings first due to her Mask and scores 3 wounds-- Lelith dodges all of them! Lelith swings back and slices 2 wounds off of Jain
-Now free of the Mask's effects, Lelith swings back and does 3 wounds, murderizing Jain Zar

WINNER: LELITH HESPERAX

Ouch. That really was a horrible mismatch for Jain Zar.

Corien Sumatris vs Silas Alberec (from Badab War)
-Sumatris advaces, fires for no damage, charges-- falls short!
-Alberec advances, fires & does 1 unsaved wound; charges-- Sumatris does 1 unsaved wound to Alberec, who swings back and does 2 unsaved wounds, splatting Sumatris!

-Arra'kon fires, misses w. plasma rifle, all other shooting fails to wound! Jumps back 5"

-Both sides fail to hurt each other
-Autek Mor does no damage, Honour Guards do 1 unsaved wound back and fell Autek Mor!

WINNER: AUN'VA

Note: I rolled this fight figuring that in close combat, Aun'va could be ruled as the closest model and take all of the wounds on himself and his ludicrously good save. If you think I handled this wrong, please let me know.

Badrukk vs Baharroth
-Baharroth seizes initiative and flies up, shoots for no damage, and charges-- Baharroth inflicts 3 unsaved wounds and decapitates Badrukk before he can even swing!

WINNER: BAHARROTH

Be'Lakor vs Bel-Annath
-Be'Lakor gets all of Telepathy, Bel-Annath rolls Psychic Shriek and Death Mission
-Bel-Annath gains 5 dice to Be'Lakor's 7, casts Psychic Shriek, Be'Lakor fails to deny but passes LD test! Bel-Annath casts Death Mission (3 counters) and charges-- does 4 wounds to Be'Lakor, 2 saved; Be'Lakor swings back and does 1 wound, saved!
-Be'Lakor gains 7 dice to Bel-Annath's 6; casts Invisibility on self, Bel-Annath fails to deny; fails to cast Terrify; Bel-Annath misses all attacks, Be'Lakor misses as well!
-Bel-Annath does 1 unsaved wound and FELLS BE'LAKOR!!!

WINNER: BEL-ANNATH

(HOLY COW! That was the biggest upset I could ever imagine! I expected Be'Lakor to be a top contender, and figured he would splat Bel-Annath easily. I did not expect a squishy Farseer to solo a 350-point Daemon Prince like that.)

Belial (with thunder hammer and storm shield) vs Bluescribes
--Bluescribes seize initiative and fly away, roll on Pyromancy and get Fire Shield. Not very useful...
-Belial advances and charges-- falls short

I loved that Grukk vs. Krom match! Makes up for Ghazzy's epic fail against HIS nemesis...

Keep on rolling

Abaddon vs Kharn would be an interesting one.

Also Obyron vs Khan & Imotehk vs Helbrecht

Cant remember if you've already done them though...
