[user][url]As I have started posting pictures of my Mantic Minis in the Mantic sub-forum I guess I should add a painting log to Dakka. Hopefully I will be able to post something most days and I am working on my camera skills.. or trying to.

Background
I started way back in the 90s playing Space Crusade, HeroQuest, Epic, Blood Bowl, Manowar, 40k and my favourite WFB. I also did a lot of model railwaying with my Dad. I played at least once a week (usually on a Friday night) and school holidays were spent in my friends garage playing games. Then I went to Uni, joined the gaming club in freshers, but got slagged by my "friends", discovered alcohol and girls and never went to one of the club meetings (which I regret a lot). After uni, I sold most of my models and never thought much about it again.

About 5 years ago, I decided I wanted to paint models again and perhaps play some games with my niece and nephew (they arent interested though). I watched a lot of Beasts of War videos, read forums and made some initial purchases. Productivity has been up and down (this year has been my most productive by far). My Dad (who was also my best friend) died 2 years ago, and I found it hard to do any hobbying for about a year and a half as it reminded me of all the good times we spent playing trains, and I really missed showing him finished models. I was meant to paint some of his 00 figures for him, but work and life got in the way. He also painted pictures and read so much about art he was great to ask about colour theory and stuff - plus he bought me quite a few brushes and cool stuff like flow improver and brush soap when I started painting again.

Anyway, this year I have been very productive. The hobby bug has really bit in and I have over 350 models painted so far this year (albeit a good majority are my Undead, which are essentially a undercoat, wash and gloss varnish). My RPL (Resin Plastic Lead) pile is still vast (I have received over 700 models in the post this year). I hope my productivity continues into the New Year and figure a blog is a good way to keep the motivation up. I do have a blog over at the Mantic Forum but I figure I will be painting a lot of non-Mantic models in the upcoming months, Id prefer to try and only post my Mantic stuff there (not that I think they would mind).

Anyhow, a few pictures to get started

My first model

This was the first model I painted when I started hobbying again. He is one of Ruglud's Armoured Orcs. I had a unit of these back in the 90s. I remember phoning GW and asking if they were still available and the "Troll" on the phone telling me that they would cast them up for me. I felt special that day. I was 14 or so and the great GW were going to cast a unit especially for me They were awesome value as well. Someone in New Zealand bought them off me (at not such awesome value for them). It is so strange what you remember. I love these Orcs!

My current Dwarf Army

More units, characters and warmachines are planned for the future

This morning I've mostly been playing with MDF, getting some scenery for Bolt Action

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I've also been getting a few things based up. My hot glue gun is showing its value.

Dwarf Ironwatch Troops
My Dwarf units all have different coloured gloves and accessories to break up the blue and add some colour to the army.

Undead Ghoul Troop
These are my Bloody Ghouls, added the RatDogs for something different. The comparison shoot is with my Rusty Ghouls.

Action Shot

Don't shoot until you see the whites of their eyes... But, but, Commander, Robert doesnt paint eyes...

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Got a couple more Enforcers painted... I dropped the Assault troop and haven't found the knife thing that broke off...

And a family photo

A rough and ready paint job on my evil monument thing (a £2.99 purchase on eBay). It doesn't look that out of place beside the Battlefield in a Box thing. For so cheap and about 20 minutes work, I'm happy. I would be very tempted to paint up a suitable Grim Reaper style model to sit on the top, if I found something cheap (Reaper Bones, perhaps).

Evil Halflings will rule the world!!!!

This is a great little mini from Oathsworn, who is now my Army General!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Some more terrain building done today. Hoped to get more done but my niece and nephew came to visit... and I had great fun playing Top Trumps...

Anyway, a lovely little building from 4Ground. This is the first of 4 that I purchased. When they are all done, I might try and weather them a little but probably not as they are so pretty!

I also wanted to get trees done up, so these are a little kit 4Ground sell. Removable bases for the trees and a nicely shaped MDF base. This matches one I bought years ago. Have a load of trees and hedging material I want to get done over the next few days.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
And some WW2 scenery. The barbed wire, is from Javis I think, it came pre-painted/focked - I just added the wire. The bunker is Sarissa Precision. Easily put together, and I think it looks nicely weathered

Still on a scenery kick. Had the hot glue gun out and not some more trees stuck to bases. Started on a couple of bases for tress. Started another 4Ground building. The only thing I got finished was these Telegraph Poles.

The scenery kick continues. Trees and hedges getting some work. All I want to do is seal them with some model railway scenic stuff I have. Hopefully i'll get this done tonight after my visitors leave after the rugby!

Some little trees based up.

A wee bush and plant - I went a bit model railway here, but it is a nice 120mm x 40mm piece of scenery. I'll do a few more over the next few days.

All the stuff I am going to spray later. If I was bald, I would use hair spray lol...

Hey Gadge, thanks for kind words and popping in. Yeah, the 4Ground stuff is prepainted. I just glued them together. I love they way they look but they are expensive compared to unpainted MDF. 4Ground sell an unpainted Timber Framed Cottage for £9, but it is £16 painted. The extra money is worth it, I think.

Some more scenery on the go this morning. The glue is still wet under the grass...

And my cute postlady brought me these trees this morning. Better than I could do and not that expensive, around £12 on ebay including postage. The Forest of Doom is growing

And more scenery done this afternoon. Trying to make the most of time off. A few bits of cork still showing on the rocks but it isnt noticeable in real life... Really like these and will be nice for skirmish games, KOW, Bolt Action, 40k etc.

And starting to put together 2 Bolt Action armies. Built a Sherman (Turret and track not glued on obviously).

All the stuff I have done over the last few days. I've different shaped MDF bases coming, so bigger less geometric shapes for next year.

Review of 2014
2014 was a good year, hobby wise. I really got stuck in and got paint of models, scenery built and painted, but, there is always a but, I bought far too many models. My final totals were

Bought - 714

Painted - 362

These don't include all the scenery I bought or all the scenery I painted or built but I painted only half the number of models I bought. Also, I am still waiting on Kickstarter models I pledged into as well. Last year I pledged in the Folio Kickstarter (lightbox for miniature photos), Dreadball Extreme, Project Pantheon 1: Odin, Lord of Asgard, Clan McFiggin Dwarf Brewers, Dungeon Saga, Olleys Armies Prussian Scrunts, Oathsworn's Sci-fi Robots, Kings of War II, Forward Base (just for some resin scatter terrain), Samurai Dwarfs, Unseen Waterloo (will be used as a resource book if I ever do Napoleonics), and Anarchy Models Stencils. It is far too much and I need to control my hobby spending much, much more this year! Ebay is also a killer as I see little bits of flock or scatter, or paint and end up spending £20 or £30 to fill my already filled drawers with more stuff I don't really need!

Anyway, 2015 will be different. I am going to try and stay of Kickstarter (though the Camel Cannon on at the moment may get a few pounds), and I am going to spend less on models. I will however still buy the 40k codexs and books that come out even though I have zero intentions of actually playing 40k in the future, it is just a collectors thing. To help things along, I am going to record my loot... hopefully it will shame me into buying less. I do have quite a few eBay things on the way that I purchased in 2014 and a Zinge order.

Goals for 2015
I would like to paint more than I buy. It may not happen due to Dreadball Xtreme, Dungeon Saga and KOW II, as I went all in on those and have quite a few plastic bits still to come from Deadzone. But I will try. I'd also like to get competent with my airbrush. I bought one this time last year, and have only really used it for undercoating. That must change.

Anyway, rather than have a post of text, here is the first loot of 2015 and what I am going to be working on today (unless I sit and play xcom all day like I did yesterday). I also intend to tidy up my workspace, it is too messy!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Glue still wet on this but the first finished thing of 2015... I wonder how quickly I will get bored of saying first of 2015... Also I used some of the moss I got today, go me!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Got some painting done. Highlights look starker in photos than real life due to flash on my phone. Plan on varnishing later today and perhaps getting the basing on the Drop Suit guy done as well.

Iron Ancestor legs. The colours for my Forgefathers is Green and Grey. The other 2 Ancestors I have are both done with a lot of green, so this one will be grey being the dominant colour.

Not much done on the medic, but it is coming on. Happy with the skin tone.

I've went with a stealth look on Bjarn Starnafall. It is darker in real life and looks as if he would appear behind you and mess up your day. Fits into my Forgefather army, and Im happy with the paint job.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
And spent a bit of time on my German Medic, perhaps my Fieldgrey is too grey and not enough green, but I will see what it looks like under sunlight tomorrow.

Today's post brought

I love these Decoart paints, great for painting scenery and I am starting to run low on my black and grey (£12.30).

I also spent a few pennies at Zinge (£38.50). I really wanted some of the Corrigated Iron Sheets to make some scatter scenery and I am feed up dropping models and bits onto the floor, so the hobby apron seems a cool idea. Also picked up green stuff, Jerry Cans and some ammo cases for basing Deadzone and stuff.

Today, I have family coming for lunch and to watch rugby, so won't get much done today. Also the light is awful this morning so thought i would do a post, surf the web and stuff and hopefully it will brighten up. I'll probably spend some time this evening under my painting lamps so would prefer not to sit this morning under them. I do plan on working on these today though.

Well my visitors stayed longer than expected, and I had a few beers so no painting last night. Got a few things done this morning.

Paint is done on my German medic, varnishing and basing await! Happy enough how it turned out. Might go greener on other models I think. Not sure some of the equipment is painted in the "correct" colours but wear, tear and dirt...

And Forgefather dude finished (well I need to touch up the black paint on his base.

And a group shot with my other Forgefathers.

And some more terrain, I messed about with today. Going to add some cables and barbed wire, I think. Needs a tidy up as well.

Nothing done yesterday, the shock of being back to work after the holidays. Going to do a few bits and pieces now before work. Two days of loot below, but thankfully this is everything I purchased over Christmas and the start of this year. The only things to come are Kickstarter related.

So got my medic finished. Well, need to wait for the glue on the base and the matt varnish to dry and a final check.

Disaster with my Enforcer Captain. Started to do the red... Dropped him, broke of the arm and knife fist thing. Glued back on, then dropped him again. The cabling from the armour to the arm broke off, can't find it, so just cut it away.

Started on a bit of scenery. Hot gluing trees to removable bases. I'll hide the blob of hot glue with basing materials.

And work starting on a rocky outcrop. Going to undercoat it in stages and add height in stages to make sure I can get the brush at all the cork.

Also got some work done on a Deadzone/Antenocities Air Filter. Not sure I will do too much more to this.

And with its brother.

Thanks GiraffeX.

Anyway, getting a few wee bits done this morning. Just taking a wee break now as I wait for paint to dry.

More added to the Forest of Doom.

And the Forest of Doom grows again. I didn't realise that these trees look so small on the base. When I get a bit some wintery/autumn flock/scatter or whatever, I'll add more to the base. Nothing jumped out at me when I looked in my boxes. I'll need to get bigger trees for the other bases I have.

Still not feeling the best so don't plan on doing very much today. I did get some loot. Free loot, or rather loot that was paid for last year! Mantic 3rd Wave...

30 Enforcers, 35 Peacekeepers, 2 ForgeGuard sprues and a Stunt Bot.

And going to do a running log of painting a German Feldgendarmes. This is a new style of painting for me. Normally, I use black undercoat and a lot of washes, so this is a bit different.

Anyway, this is the model after prep. two light undercoats of Vallejo grey primer, followed by a very thin wash of black.

Feeling normal again, and getting some painting done before I go to work this afternoon.

Skin of my German. Initial base coat was Vallejo Dwarf Flesh, followed by a highlight of Vallejo Heavy Fleshtone. Didnt like it, so gave it a wash of Orygn Flesh. Then highlight of Heavy Fleshtone, then further highlights of Heavy Fleshtone lighten with Vallejo light flesh tone. Happy now. Sorry for bad photos.. There is a slight bit of colour added to the bottom lip with Rose Brown.

Also did some work on my pool. Burnt Umber on the banks and bed to give it a dirty look. Had hoped the postie would have delivered some water effects (I want to see if it is better than gloss varnish before I make some rivers) I ordered today so I could get this finished in the next day or two. But no such luck.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Scrap that, Postie did arrive. Shame on me :(

Automatically Appended Next Post:
First pour of Water Effects. Will be adding reeds, perhaps a few more stones, then doing another pour. Will be interesting to see how the colours settle as it dries.

Helmet of German painted. I may add another highlight to the rim.

Viewing your models under a cheap macro lens isn't great for your confidence :(

Starter to build the Forgeguard... still mold lines showing... I thought I got them :(

Trousers and boots of German done. Trousers are Dark Bluegrey, followed by shadows blended in with Black Grey. A light highlight of Blackgrey and Neutral grey was then added. Boots are black, blackgrey, neutral grey, and nuln oil. Not necessarily in that order

This morning so far I have been...

Unbending resin and restic...No idea why I build the raptor, it wont be getting paint anytime soon.

Painted the jacket of my German. The initial basecoat is a mix of German Fieldgrey and Black Grey, then a layer of Fieldgrey, leaving the shadows, then a highlight of Fieldgray and ivory, and a final highlight with a touch more ivory.

A very bad picture of a finished Ghoul. I think I am going to do up a regiment in this skin tone.

The postie brought some brick walls from eBay. Have lots of ideas for these.

And this is how the swamp/pool is looking. Waiting for a few bits, then I will do another layer of the water effect.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
The belt is painted black and highlighted with Rose Brown added to the black. Pouches are painted Canvas, and highlighted with ivory added. The necklace thing painted black, then Gunmetal Grey, then highlight with Leadbeacher. Metal gun bits painted with the gunmetal and Leadbelcher.

Just need to finish the gun, work out what colour to paint the thing on his arm, what transfers to put on helmet and base...

Also have worked on 2 more Ghouls. If I am home from work earlish, I'll paint the eyes and do the blood, and I'll get them varnished and based tomorrow. Also used some of the "leftover" paint to work on a Brock rider, and a Mantic Troll. Need to think of a colour to paint the skin of the Troll.

ForgeGuard will be grey and green to match these guys.

Though they will probably be more grey and stealthy looking like this

Loot update - some lumps of cork to make some bigger pieces of rocky terrain. I may have made an order for more 4Ground Buildings this morning :(

And a "finished" German Feldgendarmerie. Still need to find out a few things to finish. The wooden parts of the gun are Flat Brown, then highlighted with added Orange Brown.
