As GW seems to be licensing out more of it's IP to the gaming world to make easy money I was wondering if the likelihood of a 40k movie is getting closer? What do you think? Still a 'no way' or 'yeah it could be possible'.

Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life. Beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people. When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.

At this point, I think GW would allow someone to make a movie... except noone would be wiling to pay money for the IP. Too much fluff dilution, too many ott events, too much silliness... Santa Grimnar, any spacemarine flyer, centurions, etc... too silly to make a decent movie out of without cutting significant parts out.

I would not even want a GW movie. It would just been a massive SM circlejerk.

Yeah, GW already did that and it was abysmal. I don't think a "proper" film would be any better, even if they actually had a budget.

May not be movie, but would love to see TV show for gaunt's ghosts, maybe on HBO. Something along lines of GoT would do great in my opinion.

Let us not mention the Ultramarines movie. They have allowed the producers of "The Lord Inquisitor" to make the film. I would love to see a Horus Heresy TV series, but is would be too expensive realistically. A Gaunt's Ghosts TV series could definitely be done though and I think it is an excellent idea. It adequately explains the background and would be based of one of 40k's best book series. Another good candidate for a TV series would be based on the Ventris books. To be honest, 40k movies and TV series along with just advertising would get more people into the hobby. Combined with more reasonable prices, this would definitely improve GWs profits.

course they would. if a hollywood film studio arrived on their lot with a dump truck full of money and said "we wanna make a 40k movie" GW'd be stupid to say no

They would. But nobody would submit to the level of control they would demand.

Disregard the "unofficial" bit at the beginning, GW are involved enough with this to have sent ADB over to help with the writing.

I'd love to see a 40k mini stores or something along those lines. As mentioned before, HBO could do a bang up job with one, but would need significant freedom with the IP, and a huge budget to boot.

A Heresy era series would probably the best, as it has a beginning and something of an end, but it would also mean a wider audience would need to be reached. My folks, my wife and my buddies all watch GOT, but I'm not sure of I can convince all those parties top indulge in bolter porn. Others have mentioned the Imperial Guard; possibly more palatable.

The other aspect would be toning down the OTT nature of some of 40k's more unusual races. Orks, for example, would need to be a true menace and not comic relief, and the warp/daemons would have to be believable but scary as all get out.

I truly think if you could do it right, Warhammer 40000 would be an incredible piece of cinema, but I do not feel that there is any way to do it justice with the current state of affairs. The series would have to.take itself much more seriously AND not deviate from the path for the duration in order to be a respectable film/series.

an HBO series that follows the Horus Heresy series would be the way to go.

If they did 1 book a season for the first 3 books, and then did a season or two for going to terra/sieging terra with some side stories tossed in, it would be epic.

the audio books are like 6 hours + long, so if they did like 12-18 1 hour episodes per book, i think it'd be pretty well done. Long enough to capture all the important details and action, but it would also not drag on like GOT seems to. (the dragons are coming, i swear!)

the real problems come in the form of budget, having a solid cast of actors, and introducing new audiences to the grimdark universe of warhammer.

The real issue it's hard to get a decent 4 quadrant film/tv show out of the 40k universe.

You certainly couldn't get away with doing the Heresy properly, unless you ret-conned at least a few of the Primarchs to be women, which would make the older fans absolutely livid.

However, I mentioned in a different thread that the Space Marine video game had an excellent female character, and based on that, the "current" IG make for the most feasible place from which to draw main characters.

All that said, GW is notoriously protective of their IP, and most studios are going to be extremely weary of that after the fiasco with Microsoft and the Halo movie.

i disagree with the need to change primarchs to females

the books have strong female characters in them. the remembrancers are very much main characters. especially the one in galaxy in flames who becomes the first saint of the emperor.......

I also disagree with the need to change the primarchs to females.

But it feels like it's something you'd need to do before you'd get greenlit by a studio.

Why? There's plenty of shows that have predominantly male casts with only 1-2 females. Stargate SG-1 was just such a show and it even originated on one of the premium channels before moving to Sci-Fi. Also Band of Brothers, which had a total of ZERO main female characters.

That's a good point about Band of Brothers. It probably has something to do with the historical context of that show, and that it is based on actual events and people.

As far as fiction goes, it's hard to point to something that doesn't have a prominent female character in the main cast. Otherwise "how're we gonna git them women dollars?" (this is how I imagine studio execs speak).

Another issue with the Heresy is that it would involve an extremely large ensemble cast, which looks pretty daunting both story wise and budgetary as well. Although GoT did it, and it's something I'd imagine is seen as something to replicate. Then again, it's brand of grounded high fantasy is probably less expensive to do compared with grim dark sci-fi.

This is not to sound rude, but have you guys read the first few novels or just read the wiki and lore for the heresy?

There's already strong female characters, and not every primarch and legion is a main character at every moment in the books. The first season would mostly follow 63rd expeditionary fleet and add in other primarchs and legions when they do come up.

I haven't read the books, which ironically makes it easier to illustrate the issues with transitioning this thing to other media.

That said, starting with the pitch "space fleet travels the galaxy searching for superhuman soldiers separated from their father as infants" makes this thing sound a lot more marketable. As well, it would allow any pitch to draw parallels with other successful properties.

How fleshed out is the crew of the 63rd expeditionary fleet? Because allowing a studio to go nuts with them out would be an amazing selling point.

Most of the crew is not, but like I said, if they focused on the remembrancers who followed the legion around documenting their crusade, there's very significant female characters.
