Hey everyone I just came across an amazing deal for some Tau models and I have been wanting to mess around with some tau so I picked them up. I came up with a 1500 point list and wanted to see if any Tau vets could see how it looks. Not looking for anything compivitve right now just because I need to learn how to play them , not just against them.

HQ
Commander-147
Drone controller /target lock/burst cannon/plasma rifle
2 marker drones

Troops
3 crisis suits- 169
Shas'vre/3 plasma rifles/3 missle pods/bonding knifes

3crisis suits- 174
Shas'vre/6 fusion blasters(2 each)/target lock/bonding knifes

Elite

Riptide-230
Velocity tracker/earth caste pilot array/burst cannon

Riptide-205
Ion accelerator/ velocity tracker

6 stealth suits-180
Burst cannons

Fast attack
12 marker drones-168

Heavy support
Broadside-86
Velocity tracker/ All missiles

Broadside-66
All missiles

Broadside-66
All missiles

Basic plan is to run the commander with the drones and mark what I can each turn. Depending on what is on the table I might deep strike the fusion blaster suits to Pop armor. Riptides do riptide stuff and stealth suits for foot troops. The broadsides are there to just pump out as many high str attacks as they can. And AA is covered pretty good. Thoughts.

I would double up on missile pods for both the commander and the two crisis suit squads. I would also give the riptides interceptor and all 3 of the broadsides interceptor. Velocity trackers are too expensive on broadsides, more fit for riptides, also free on sky rays.

So please bare with my
Noobness with tau but by putting intercepter on the broadsides wouldn't give them sky fire correct? So I would be firing snap shots?

For your ion accelerator riptide I'd suggest switching your velocity tracker out for an Early Warning Override, logic being the strength of the IA is in its low AP blast, which can wipe out deep striking terminators in a heart beat, your HBC will deal with anti air in the large part.

The issue with your commander running with the drones is... 14 BS5 markerlights are overkill in every situation, the drones must all fire at the same target so you are essentialy just slinging 200 points of commander/markerlight into a unit, only to sling more people for another unit to actually destroy that unit. At this points level thats an obscene sink into destroying a single target.

I'd be tempted to give your plasma teams 2 plasma rifles a piece rather than mixed weaponry, in rapid fire range you get the same number of shots, lose 1 point of strength but jump from AP4 to AP2 which against anything marine related is awesome.

Twin-Linked on the HYMP plus your ECPA VT Burstide will cover flyers.

If you want to keep the giant squad of markerlight drones you should add at least 2 sky rays.

Spot on. I learned the hard way that you'd rather get a twin-linked snapshot off then gamble that your skyfire will still be standing when the turn's over. Sound advice.
I'll also second the missile pods for the Commander. You want him as far away from the action as possible, keeping your Warlord and marker source out of range of as much trouble as possible.
The Fusion Crisis Suits could make due with only 1 or 2 Target Locks. The first suit can pick his target normally, the other two pick theirs with the target locks. I usually double down two suits on the primary armor threat so I get by with one Target Lock pretty well, but 2 gives you more flexibility.
I would love to know how the Stealth Suits work for you. I haven't used mine much, but recently one friend at my FLGS was playing them in an interesting fashion. He would load them with Counterfire Defense Systems and deep strike them in to run defense for more valuable units retreating form a melee threat. At times he re-rolled passed reserves rolls with his comms relay, in hopes to fail the re-roll and keep them off the table until the other player committed the assault unit to a target. The assaulter would then have to charge the Stealth Suits and take CDS overwatch plus Supporting Fire, or maneuver around them and take a longer charge at the intended target. Both times his opponent chose the second option, still taking supporting fire, and both times the Stealth Team killed just enough models so they failed their (now longer) charge.

Happy Hunting!

Thanks for all the info. Now as I am trying to work with the models I got in that bundle how would splitting the drone squads into two. Run one at 8 and one at 6 with the commander in it. The commander squad would be used for more high threat targets to make sure they hit.

That is a pretty cool way of using the stealth teams. I might have to try that.

As far as the EWOD and VT goes that all makes sense. I am a space wolf player by trade so normally I don't care about all the sky fire stuff lol.

As for left over models I have 10 fire warriors. And 10 kroot. Would these be better than the stealth suits?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I just worked my list a bit. Added and took out everything that needed to be done. Also dropped the drone squad to 6 so I will have 8 with the commander and added a unit of 10 fire warriors with bonding knives to add more bodies to the list. Thoughts?

So it's looking like this.

HQ
Commander-147
Drone controller /target lock/missile pod/missile pod
2 marker drones

Troops
3 crisis suits- 169
Shas'vre/6 missile pods/bonding knifes

3crisis suits- 174
Shas'vre/6 fusion blasters(2 each)/target lock/bonding knifes

10 fire warriors-100
Bonding knives

Elite

Riptide-230
Velocity tracker/earth caste pilot array/early warning overdrive /burst cannon

Riptide-205
Ion accelerator/ early warning overdrive

6 stealth suits-180
Burst cannons/bonding knives/ counter defense

Fast attack
6 marker drones-87

Heavy support
Broadside-86
EWOD/All missiles

Broadside-66
All missiles

Broadside-66
All missiles
