Hey all,

I'm from the 40k side of the forums - I've been looking at some Cryx Heavy Warjacks to use as counts-as Grotesques for Dark Eldar. I like the semi-organic-machine look much, much more than the creepy mutant look, and based on what I've read on PP's website, it sounds like the Heavy Warjack kits come with enough parts to make three separate Helljacks, meaning I could realistically kit them out like actual Grotesques (including a Liquefier gun via the Corruptor parts). The only difficulty is that it looks like the standard base for them is 50mm. Grotesques are 40mm standard. Just based on the pictures I'm looking at, it seems like I could fit them on 40mm bases, since there's a bit of extra space. But with their long limbs and large size, I'm concerned that they'll be impossible to get base-to-base for close combat.

Are there any Warmachine players that can give me a realistic idea of how big they'll be, and if this is doable? For reference, here's the Grot from GW's main site: http://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Dark-Eldar-Grotesque?_requestid=16174700. It's a bit bigger than it's base as well, and there are plenty of 40k models that are bigger than their bases (looking at you, Tyranids). But I'm still concerned that they'll just be too big.

No, what the heavy kits come with is one body and the bits to make your choice of 3 different jacks. You just have different arms basically.

A Helljack will be very over large on a 40mm base.

Here is a comparison between a warjack and a terminator. Granted, the Juggernaut is a little larger than a Cryx jack but the Helljack will still look way too large on a 40mm.

I apologize, I meant to say three separate kits - in any case, it would be better than the single Grotesque sculpt that GW has right now. And that's a damn shame, they're even styled like DE stuff. If they were only a tad smaller.

Though, given GW's recent deal with saying that base size doesn't matter as much, I'm curious if it would make the game much different having them on the 50mm bases.

I can't see anyone complaining; using a smaller model so it's easier to block LOS/claim cover is not okay, using a larger model shouldn't be. I'd be more worried about how well they fit on the tabletop. (Model-size-wise I feel like it'd make more sense to call a Slayer a Talos than using the heavies as Grotesques).

That was my biggest concern too. I just really am not a fan of the mutant/freak/monster thing that Haemonculus Covens is all about - and Cryx Helljacks are almost a dead ringer for a more mechanical styling of the same idea. If only they weren't so damn big. I might buy one one of these days just to build and paint, I could see if the size difference would really be too jarring in an actual game. The last game I played involving a lot of CC in some ruins, we gave up pretty quickly on trying to delicately place our models. The flailing arms and special weapons makes it pretty difficult regardless of base size, so it might not be as bad as it would initially seem to have those big guys stomping around in a squad.

On the other hand, if anyone knows of anything in a similar style but a different size (for a different game system, maybe?) don't hesitate to tell!

(I might just have to run Deathjack or one of the other big Helljacks as a Talos, that's a great idea AnomanderRake)

Bane Knights wouldn't make bad Wracks, but nothing else is coming to mind right now.

Take a look at the stalker light jack. It is a little different but it fits well on a 40mm base and is very stabby.

Cryx is the king of overhanging heavies in my opinion.

If you're playing 40k, just put the model on whatever fits, after all base size doesn't matter.

I totally glossed over that and the helldiver, thanks for pointing that out. They're a lot more affordable too.

True, and it's good to hear that. I just don't want them to seem woefully out of place. I love using counts-as and conversions, but I also want people at my FLGS to not give me the stink-eye when I break them out, you know? Regardless, I love the look of Erebus and Nightmare and the other Helljacks. Damn, I might just have to convert to Warmachine if they keep putting out models like those.

Slayer next to a SM Dreadnaught for size comparison

Used it for a different thread, but thought it might help you get an idea of size if it is next to something most 40K players are more familiar with. And yes, it would be difficult to get into base to base as is, let alone on a smaller base.

Thanks, that certainly gives me a little extra perspective.
