Subject: Assault Company with Cromwell Support
|
|
Lieutenant Colonel
|
My recently begun foray into Flames of War started, as you may have seen from my other thread, with the Desert Rats and the Cromwell light tank. Since then, I have reconsidered the Desert Rats list and come to the conclusion that I don't think it offers enough flexibility in terms of the options available to me, and so I have decided to have another crack at the list using a different Company. I spent a while reading through Overlord and came across the Assault Company, specifically the Confident Veteran 50th Northumbrian Division. This is the list I've come up with, again at 1500pts.
Assault Company HQ
Assault Platoon w/ 3x Rifle Squads
Assault Platoon w/ 3x Rifle Squads
Assault Carrier Platoon w/ 1 Carrier Platoon
Desert Rats Armoured Platoon w/ 3x Cromwell, 1x Firefly
Desert Rats Armoured Platoon w/ 3x Cromwell, 1x Firefly
Corps Anti-Tank Platoon w/ 2x M10C 17 pdr
Corps Field Battery, Royal Artillery w/ 4x 25 pdr
Air Observation Post
1495pts
Tactics wise, the infantry will hold the front, being supported from behind by the M10s and Fireflys whilst the Cromwells out flank the enemy force, hunting the side armour of their tanks, whilst the field guns keep their dangerous units buried under smoke.

I'd consider dropping the M10's for 6pdrs/mortars
When you're defending in half on/off missions, they'll really cause the opponent to pause before assaulting.
Conversely when attacking the mortars give you the smoke to hide under

Will that not leave me rather short of Anti Tank? The only decent weapons I would have vs heavy tanks would be the two 17 pdrs on the Fireflys and, seeing as I know I will be facing Tigers, that seems to be rather limited. The 6 pdrs seem good against light and medium tanks, but I'm not sure if they have the firepower to deal with heavy tanks.

Remember tanks need to assault you, and 6pdrs in defensive fore hit side armour.
They are vet, concealed if dug in, and if you stay GtG cants be hit until the enemy is in 16, and then only on 6's.
Whilst he's parked trying to hit them so he can assault safely, your fireflies can shoot him, and cromwells outflank

That makes a lot of sense. Assuming I'm the defender. It might be a bit more difficult on the attack though... Also, what do you think of the Universal Carriers? Reece seems necessary, but the universal carriers don't seem all that great.

Well the trick is to defend then! If you take a sherman platoon they have 'tow hooks' to more easily move 6pdrs....
Universal carriers are perfect for recce, they lift gone to ground, they can quickly move to an objective, and you have no reason to use them for anything else - perfect recce

As do Cromwells, so mobility for the guns shouldn't be a problem. So, modified list: Assault Company HQ Assault Platoon w/ 3x Rifle Squads Assault Platoon w/ 3x Rifle Squads Assault Carrier Platoon w/ 1 Carrier Platoon Desert Rats Armoured Platoon w/ 3x Cromwell, 1x Firefly Desert Rats Armoured Platoon w/ 3x Cromwell, 1x Firefly Assault Anti-Tank Platoon w/ 4x OQF 6pdr (late) and Loyd Carriers Corps Field Battery, Royal Artillery w/ 4x 25 pdr 1485pts 15pts, so I could add transports for the field guns. What do you think?

I would use the 15 points left on.
5 pts.Transport for the infantry HQ,(Having the CiC and 2IC mobile may help you .)
10 pts. Upgrading the Arty OP to a Sherman OP.
or
10 pt upgrade to add a 50 cal to a Universal carrier.
