Cipher Studios Announces Anima Tactics Discontinued

Longview, Washington, February 24th, 2015 –

Cipher Studios announces that the Anima Tactics™ Miniature Skirmish Game is being discontinued. Anima Tactics™ has had a long run, launching in 2006 with over 150 unique characters released. The game has become unsustainable from a business standpoint due to market and global distribution changes, so the hard decision to discontinue the line had to be made.

We at Cipher Studios thank our fans for the many years of support in building a wonderful community of players and hobbyists around a game we have loved creating.

Anima Tactics™ and Hell Dorado™ will no longer be sold through distribution. The ranges for both product lines will remain available online through the Ninja Division | Soda Pop Miniatures web store.

The Cipher Studios web store will close March 13th. Stock will then be transferred to the Ninja Division | Soda Pop Miniatures warehouse and resume sale on March 30.

The last new figures for Anima Tactics™ will be released through the web store, including a special edition Celia model.

The Hell Dorado™ range will continue. Hell Dorado™ new releases will resume, with the next release wave beginning during Q2 2015.

It's a pity to hear this. I like the miniatures and I would like them to remain available even only for display.

Well huh. That came out of left field.

Are there really truly over 150 Anima Tactics figures out in the wild? I never realized there were that many.

Weren't these 2 lines basically Cipher's bread and butter? I know they've merged with Soda Pop to form Ninja Divison, but still.

Maybe we'll see the line return in board game form at some point? Give it a few years to cool off?

Wow that sucks. Always loved the Anima range. Fun game and models are quite fun to paint.

This did come out of no where, I wonder if Hell Dorado is not far behind?

Wonder what this means for the Gate of Memories KS starter

Good thing I never pledged for that limited edition Bearer miniature from the Gate of Memories KS. On that, is that game also cancelled? I believe it's running late despite two! kickstarters.

I totally forgot about the video game they kickstarted.

I'm curious as well how that will be affected.

Well at least the Anima Tactics minis will still be available (at least for a while), as metal they can produce them as and when they need them

I can't see Hell Dorado lasting as a direct only in any meaningful way, I suspect they'll just release whatever new content has already been developed and paid for and then just let it quietly die off. Again they are planning to keep the minis avaible which is good as some of them are really nice especially the Aztec/Mayan inspired stuff,

Still have my unopened box of Hell Dorado minis from the kickstarter.

Yay me. :(

All I have from them is the original darkside starter.

I opened it once, snapped the spindly, misshapen metal scythe while trying to bend it into shape, and put everything away forever.

For me, Anima always had the problem of having little to no actual pictures available anywhere of the models themselves. Oftentimes, the products would be advertised by concept art alone.

I liked and bought the Cordelia and Lilith models, but after realized Cordelia had sculpted underwear, I realized I wasn't the target demographic for a game like this. Makes sense that Soda Pop picked it up.

It's at least good that these miniatures aren't lost forever and that they'll still be available for people.

Wonder if the prices will go down on the anima stuff? I've been meaning to pick up a few for one reason or another, but couldn't justify the price.

I think Hell Dorado might be the only game I have bought that had 2 deaths.

This is somewhat disappointing, but not surprising. These are both rather obscure (but beautiful) lines.

It was obvious that the Hell Dorado KS was an effort to relaunch Cipher into the big leagues a la Relic Knights / Wrath of Kings. Pulling only $130k instead of $1.3M pretty much guaranteed this eventual result.

I hope that ND and Cipher are able to make something of Anima Tactics going forward, maybe some sort of streamlined KS with new PVC minis to bring the cost down?

Ugh, I hope not. Maybe until after seeing if Conan/7sins has finally "fixed" PVC before doing something like that. Although isn't Anima a larger scale than 28mm?

I think that Journey / Conan / 7 Sins have a much better idea of how PVC works, so they can sculpt / tool with that in mind, compared to back when SedWars launched.

The Journey stuff looks really good. At tabletop distances, the PVC models are hard to tell apart. Only if you're doing competition painting is resin obviously better:

If Anima Tactics can be as good as Journey (shipping Q2), it will be excellent.

I'm not sure about AT scale - Cipher doesn't make it easy to know how big their stuff is. They don't give base size & model height on their website.

Same for my Helldorado board. I'm thinking about asking for a change to another layout...

Pretty sure the Cipher stuff is all around 28mm or so. They've always seemed a little small to me, to be honest.

I always thought they were similar in size to Infinity figures.

I changed mine from the Anime board.. I went with Anima primarily for fantasy type games.. I was planning on giving Anima a try on it but I do still play Mordheim so it's not a complete waste.. just really really unfortunate. Kinda wishing I'd gone with the Hawk 28mm now though :/

Wow, a local store here carries Hell Dorado minis, will they be recalled? Glad I picked up a few that I wanted for other uses from them already!

I doubt it,

It's only tied operations like GW that recall stuff from their own stores that tend to have to do that,

Independants tend to have to swallow the (potential) loss that having a bunch invested in a cancelled game brings

Actually Miniature Market has a lot of the Anima Tactics stuff in stock, and it's probably worth keeping an eye on it to see if it gets cleared out cheap(er)

I would like to see that. That is, I would love to see the sculpts in boardgame plastic for boardgame piece prices. The sentinel is an awesome figure, but I won't be buying more of him, or indeed any more metal minis if I can avoid it.

Good luck with that. Low supply and people like me purchasing because AT was on my mind and now I finally have to get off the fence. All that will be left will be the stuff no one wanted anyways.

Sad though about Anima Tactics. The game seems really good. The minis are excellent. Kind of explains why no new books came out and minis dropped from a trickle.

And I wouldn't touch a board game with these minis. They won't turn out well in PVC, too fine a detail.

Sad.

Well this is reason to finish my saracens army before I can't find them any more if Helldorado is going the same direction.

This shouldn't effect the video game, since I think it is under the Anima RPG license which is controled by Fantasy Flight still

Ouch. I think this will start the spiral around the drain for Hell Dorado as well. The fluff is awesome and I've collected nearly all the figures (only 18 to go, mainly demons and lost). This has been my go-to line when I need to pad a purchase at MM, but I think going to a boutique model is going to create a major barrier to entry for new gamers as well as discouraging a lot of existing players/collectors.

Also FYI, Anima Tatics minis are not 28mm. They are closer to 32mm with some closer to 35mm. They are bigger than Infinity minis but smaller than Knight Models Batman minis.
