So, I like the loks of Dark Angels and a friend convinced me to split the Dark Vengeance box with him, He takes chaos to his growing chaos army, and I take Dark Angels. But, I was curious, How are Dark Angels? Are they fun to play? We dont play competetive, Sure we try to win but we normaly dont bring the most competetive things, instead we generaly bring the units we think seem like fun or fluffy.

They can be fun, they have nice looking bikes(that can be troops) and termies(that can be troop choices as well as any speeders taken as part of the squadren). The banner of devistation makes bolters awesome(salvo 2/4).

The ravenwing command squads(or just black knights) are nice, a squad of bikes with twin linked plasma guns.

They are not the most competitve army out there but in friendly games they can do fine.

I will warn you though, DA suck at anti-air(a symptom of being one of the first 6th ed codecies) you may need to grab allies for that or forgeworld.

Thanks for the reply ^_^ In my gaming group flyers normaly dont do much.. XD We normaly dont have more then one, Ocasionaly two flyers in a match, Often no flyers, And when there is flyers they dont do all that much compared to everythng else and can normaly be safely ignored.

I think I'l paint my Dark Angels as Guardians of the Covenant as they look cool. ^_^

Well both the things you mention here black knights and dakka banner do pretty well against most flyers.

They really don't dakka banner is useless against a flyer above av 10(and nearly useless against that) the plasma talons are pretty poor at killing flyers. A squad of 6 bikers with banner and bolters will do on average 1.2 glancing hits agaianst an av 10 flyer, a full squad of tactical marines with banner will do 0.556. A squad of 5 black knights will do 2.037/1.528/1.019/0.509 vs AVs 10/11/12/13

With little to no flyers in the are you'll be fine and guardians of the covenant do ahve a nice color scheme.

Having returned to the game last year I faithfully returned to my Dark Angel roots and though they are far from super competitive they are lots of fun.

I will admit the flyers are not great but damn if they don't look cool.

I also play in a friendly group and have beaten elder, nids, orcs, AM/IG, chaos, tau and only last week new necrons. I have also taken pasting from them all but we always have fun.

DA have lots of tricks up their sleeves (rad/stasis grenades, loads of banners, DW assault etc.) and though the characters are not the strongest the fluff is brilliant....and we have black knights....and lots of plasma... and we don't run away... and there are loads of ways to play them (deathwing, ravenwing, greenwing, ironwing)

Oh and we have humanity's last jet bike!

Never forgive, never remember!

I love that the last jetbike is so smooth that he uses it spend time with a good book.

I used to play BA and coming back to the game, I've kinda wanted to try out DA for my next army. I've been avidly following rumors though that there may be a new DA codex possibly by June, so I'm kinda waiting to see what all will be in it. I imagine I could begin painting a few things I feel like I'll really like in any case, but I can't wait to see if there really is a new book.

Also, I think the Nephilim Jetfighter is seriously cool looking. It's an actual fighter, not just a transport that looks like a flying boxcar with piddly wings. Even if the rules for it are weak, I'd take it for sheer style any day of the week.

ALL HAIL THE ORKISSIAH, TRINARY SPEAKING GOD OF ORK TECHNOLOGY. (Unlike wimpy old Binary, Orks have commands for Yes, No AND "Maybe")

I hope that DA become more competitive and that some of the cool looking units (like the aforementioned Nephilim and the Landspeeder Vengeance) get their points reduced enough to make them worth taking in competitive games in the upcoming codex. I love my Nephy so much, I almost want to take it to bed with me! (lol, not really!)

Back on topic, I have always had fun with my DA. As a newish player, I don't figure I'm good enough to win very much in competitive play anyway, so I mostly just bring lists that are fun to play and hopefully won't get totally destroyed.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

DA are a ton of fun, but not really that good without Allies.

I run a rather crappy DA list that mixes all three branches (green, DW, and RW) and it's decent fun. Some bikes and black knights, that use homing for the DW assault, while some greens ride around in a rhino and some devs give fire support. Again, not the most competitive, but for the most part I have cool models and can really play around with how I want to run my army.

Sometimes it's fun to run a bunch of RW and go all over the place, sometimes it's fun just bombard them with terminators, or sometimes I just run that mixed army I mentioned. Then there's always the option of the librarius conclave, Ezekiel with 2-4 other librarians.

Oh, and deathwing knights, accompanied by a terminator librarian, are basically the coolest models in 40k.

What is fun is ultimately up to you. If taking armies comprised mostly/entirely of bikes and/or terminators is fun, there ya go. If you like the lore, and playing them fluffy is fun, all the better. If you are like me and like the look of the flyer and use it to heck with how good it is, then great.

If you want an army that you can just point at your opponent and evaporate half their army a turn, then no. But this is probably not what you mean by "friendly".

Any army you enjoy building, painting, and/or playing is fun, fun is what you make of it. If you want, you can squeeze some more powerful builds if your friends and local players start to up their game. Ravenwing black knights, deathwing knights, and the dakka banner are just a few of our more potent toys that can either be added for a bit more umph, or built around with support to make it more competitive.

I love playing my dark angels, and don't even regret not picking up the vanilla dex this edition. I find them incredibly fun.
